Alcohol Interferes With Decision Making
Aside from the fact that alcohol makes it easier for you to make bad life choices, its also notorious for leading people to make terrible dietary choices. Even people who uphold the strictest dietary regime whilst sober have been known to neglect their diets when theyve been drinking.
If youre going to be going out for drinks, its probably a good idea that you check in with yourself. Are you really strong enough to hold true to your decisions even after youve had a few?
Add to that the next day, hangover munchies are a real thing The knock on effect of over-drinking on your diet can be a major cheat day
Eating Too Much Protein
Protein is a very important macronutrient which most people dont get enough of.
It can improve feelings of fullness and increase fat burning better than other macronutrients .
Generally speaking, more protein should lead to weight loss and improved body composition.
However, low-carb dieters who eat a lot of lean animal foods can end up eating too much of it.
When you eat more protein than your body needs, some of its amino acids will be turned into glucose via a process called gluconeogenesis .
This can become a problem on very-low-carb, ketogenic diets and prevent your body from going into full-blown ketosis.
According to some scientists, a well-formulated low-carb diet should be high in fat and moderate in protein.
A good range to aim for is 0.70.9 grams of protein per pound of body weight .
Excessive protein consumption on a low-carb diet can prevent you from getting into ketosis.
Bottom Line: Consume In Moderation

Reduced Alcohol Tolerance And Hangovers
Have you ever heard the advice to not drink on an empty stomach, or to eat starchy carbs before an evening of drinking?
Eating a carb-heavy meal before drinking can keep you from getting drunk too quickly. By the same logic, following a strict keto diet can lead to becoming intoxicated more quickly and suffering a worse hangover.
On the keto diet, you may feel drunker, faster. Without the carbs and glycogen stores, the alcohol hits your system faster and stronger. When on a keto diet, most people need significantly less alcohol to get intoxicated.
Some people also experience a worse hangover on the keto diet. To avoid this, make sure to stay hydrated. Make sure to drink plenty of water at least one large glass of water for each alcoholic drink you consume.

Be Prepared For Worse Hangovers If You Drink While Following A Keto Diet
Eating a carb-heavy meal before drinking can keep you from getting drunk too quickly. By the same token, following a strict keto diet can lead to becoming intoxicated more quickly and suffering a worse hangover.
“When you’ve eaten a lot of carbs and your glycogen stores are filled, the rate at which you get drunk usually slows down,” Dr. Josh Axe, D.N.M., C.N.S., D.C. tells Men’s Health.
However, skipping the carbs can have an adverse effect on your alcohol tolerance and ability to stave off a killer hangover.
“When you’re in ketosis, alcohol hits your system faster and stronger than it did when your body was housing more carbohydrates. Your alcohol tolerance plummets to near zero when you’re in ketosis,” Dr. Anthony Gustin, D.C., M.S. wrote on Perfect Keto.
If you’re thinking of throwing back a few shots while on a ketogenic diet, you should be prepared for a stronger hangover.

Sugar Alcohols And Keto
Sugar intake is limited on a keto diet, as eating it causes your blood sugar levels to rise.
This is an issue, as raised blood sugar levels can make it difficult for your body to remain in ketosis, which is key for reaping the benefits of the keto diet .
Given that sugar alcohols have a much less significant effect on blood sugar levels, theyre commonly found in keto-friendly products.
Furthermore, since they arent fully digestible, keto dieters often subtract the sugar alcohols and fiber from the total number of carbs in a food item. The resulting number is referred to as net carbs .
Still, due to the variation in GIs of different types of sugar alcohols, some are better for the keto diet than others.
Erythritol is a good keto-friendly option, as it has a glycemic index of 0 and works well in both cooking and baking. Plus, due to its small particle size, erythritol tends to be better tolerated than other sugar alcohols (
As such, if youre on a keto diet, you may want to limit your intake of maltitol and choose a sugar alternative with a lower GI.
Given that they negligibly affect blood sugar levels, most sugar alcohols are considered to be keto-friendly. Maltitol has a more pronounced effect on blood sugar and should be limited on a keto diet.

There is no “best” alcohol, per se. All alcohol is difficult for the body to process and contains empty calories, those with no nutritional value.
But if you want to drink alcohol on a low-carb diet, there are certainly better options than others.
As stated, pure spirits have no carbohydrates. They can be enjoyed straight-up, over ice, or mixed with a zero-carb complement like diet tonic water.
Wine has carbs, but few enough that it can be drank in moderation. Make sure you know the carbohydrate content of your choice and explore the newer low-carb varieties.

What Are The Best Alcohols To Drink On Keto
Since not all alcoholic beverages are created equal when it comes to sugar content, there are definitely some better choices you can make if your goal is to stay in ketosis.
Steering away from beer and sugary drinks are your best bet. Pure alcohol products like rum, vodka, gin, tequila and whiskey all contain no carbs, says Jonathan Valdez, RD, owner of Genki Nutrition and spokesperson for New York State Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Even though hard liquor is made from natural sugars (grains, potatoes, and fruits, during the fermentation and distillation process, that sugar is converted into ethyl alcohol instead of glucose, Valdez explains.
These are the best alcohols to drink on keto based on calorie and carb content, according to Valdez:
- White wine
- Champagne or sparkling wine
But its not just the alcohol itself you should be paying attention to. Mixers can easily kick you out of ketosis.
According to Valdez, these are the best mixers to use if youre on keto:
- Seltzer/club soda
- Crystal Light drink mix

Keto And Alcohol: The Science
Keto alcohol, such as hard liquor and spirits like rum and vodka, wont take you out of ketosis, but they can impact ketosis and fat burning.
The liver uses energy from fat to produce ketones, but in the presence of a toxin like alcohol, the liver must enter detox mode. It will switch over to using alcohol for energy in an effort to keep producing ketones and rid your body of the toxic substance. This means you will still be in a state of ketosis, but you will no longer be burning fat for fuel.
Its important to note that alcohol isnt calorie-free either. One gram of alcohol contains seven calories, so weigh all of the pros and cons before moving forward.
How Low Carb Is Vodka
Unflavored vodka is one of the lowest carb alcohols available. As a matter of fact, vodka is a true zero carb keto drink.
Vodka only contains alcohol and water. That means the only calories in vodka are alcohol calories. This fact is going to be important later when we talk about drinking vodka in moderation to stay in ketosis.
Vodkas nutritional profile is really pretty boring. Vodka has zero everything except calories, however, the number of calories varies based upon the proof of the vodka.
Proof refers to the percentage of alcohol. 100 Proof = 50% alcohol, while 80 Proof = 40% alcohol, etc

Alcohol Changes Your Metabolism
The goal of the keto diet is to stay in ketosis, and that means that you want your metabolism to be working in a very specific manner. Unfortunately, alcohol can interfere with your metabolism in a way thats not conducive to maintaining ketosis.
One of the reasons for this is that alcohol produces a number of byproducts that the body uses before consuming other nutrients. This is why alcohol can produce such a quick burst of energy. Unfortunately, this can also mess up your ketosis.
Some of the byproducts of alcohol metabolism are acetaldehyde, acetate, and phosphatidyl ethanol. These compounds are pretty toxic, and as such, your body targets them to be burned much like it would any other poisons. During this process, your body prioritizes the burning of these toxic compounds above the burning of energy sources such as glucose and lipids.
This means that the lipids which youve worked so hard to get rid of by staying in ketosis are now taking their place on the back-burner. This means that if you drink a lot, or if you drink very often, your body is going to put more time and energy into burning away the byproducts of alcohol.
In short: regular alcohol consumption can actually promote fat storage.
Gin And Diet Tonic Cocktail
The standard gin and tonic cocktail is a no-go for people undergoing a keto diet. Nevertheless, many of these classic and favorite drinks can be transformed into healthier beverages.
In general, gin is a distilled beverage that contains no carbohydrates. Still, flavored gin is available that may also be an ingredient for this cocktail. For a keto-friendly drink, be sure to stick with the pure alcohol gin.
Contrastingly, tonic water, the other main ingredient of the cocktail, is heavy in sugar and not keto-friendly in its original form. To make this keto-friendly, have a diet tonic water instead, with natural or artificial sweeteners. Both kinds of sweeteners are fine, but of course, a natural sweetener is the best option.

What Alcohol Should I Avoid On Keto
- Beer. At an average of 17g carbs per serving, theres a reason beer is sometimes called liquid bread! If you simply must have beer, look for the lightest beers, which can be as low as 2g of carb per serving. But still, beer should be consumed sparingly.
- Some wines. As above, some wines are more keto friendly than others. In general, sweeter varieties of wines like Moscato and Riesling will have a greater carb count. Also, avoid dessert wines like ports and sherries, as these contain quite a few more carbs.
- Wine coolers & malt beverages. While these colorful, fruity beverages can have a lower ABV per serving, theyre loaded with sugar and a super-high carb count.
Secrets To Drinking Alcohol On The Keto Diet
Published: By Jennifer
This is your one-stop guide to drinking alcohol on the Keto Diet.
If youve been researching a ketogenic diet then you likely have come across no alcohol advice.
Generally, youd be correct.
Alcohol and Keto dont mix well and thats because of the carb content of some alcoholic drinks along with the high sugar in others.
Its not so much the actual carbs and sugar but its what your body does with alcohol.
The object of Keto is to use fat as fuel, not carbs and certainly not sugar.
Alcohol prevents your body from metabolising nutrients.
As soon as alcohol enters your system, your liver uses it for energy and this stops fatty acid oxidation .
When you drink alcohol your body uses the calories for energy so you immediately fall off the Keto diet wagon!
Bearing the above in mind, does that mean that when you choose Keto you have to completely avoid alcohol?
After all, everyone enjoys a glass of wine now and then!
Even more so when theres a celebration and someone pops open a bottle of champagne not many people want to miss out on that opportunity!
The truth is, you can have a drink every now and then.
It is not the worst thing that you can do but as long as it really is in moderation and you jump straight back onto the Keto wagon the very next day.
Also, dont go mad!
The problem with one drink is that it usually leads to another and if youve deprived your body for a while, that temptation can be difficult to resist.
Well, there is an alternative.
