Pendleton Whisky is a 10-year old blended Canadian whiskey. Its made with water from Mt. Hood in Oregon, and is bottled by Oregons Hood River Distillers, but since its distilled in Canada, Pendleton keeps its Canadian whiskey label.
On the nose, Pendleton Whisky is sweet, with notes of caramel and vanilla. The first sip is very sweet, with lots of brown sugar and molasses, almost reminiscent of an aged rum. A bit of rye spiciness and some smoke filters through to add more complexity to the spirit. It goes down smoothly without any harshness, and finishes with that same sweetness.
Add a bit of water or an ice cube, and the sweetness is tempered a bit, but the flavors become very muted and give way to more pronounced alcohol notes.
Overall, Pendletons not bad, but its not for me. That said, those with a sweet tooth might have found their new favorite dram, and I imagine Pendleton appealing to some drinkers who dont traditionally enjoy whiskey.

Mexicos Becle, S.A.B. de C.V.also known as Casa Cuervo, whose U.S. subsidiary is Proximo Spiritshas agreed to buy the Pendleton whisky brand from Oregon-based Hood River Distillers for $205 million. The deal should close in early 2018. Like Mastersons ryewhich was also acquired by a larger company earlier this yearPendleton is a sourced Canadian whisky bottled in the U.S. with a Western-themed identity. Hood River Distillers will continue to bottle Pendleton for Proximo. Its other spiritswhich include McCarthys Oregon single malt, Trails End Kentucky straight bourbon, Double Mountain hopped whiskey, and Sinfire cinnamon whisky liqueurare not included in the deal.
This isnt Cuervos first time at the craft whiskey rodeo, though the company is best known as the owner of the eponymous Jose Cuervo tequila. In 2010, Proximo Spirits acquired the Stranahans and Tincup whiskey brands, a deal that included Stranahans Denver distillery. Since 2014, the company has also owned Bushmills Distillery in Ireland, after swapping it with Diageo for Don Julio tequila. And although not a whiskey, Hangar 1 vodkawhich was created by Lance Winters of Californias St. George Spiritswas bought by Proximo in 2010.
How Is Pendleton Whiskey Made
Pendleton Whiskey isnt distilled in Oregon but is a brand of blended Canadian whiskey aged in oak barrels for at least three years and proofed with glacier-fed water sourced from Mt. Hood National Forest . The spirit is imported at full cask strength before water is added to bring it down to bottled 80 proof.
Traditionally, Canadian whiskeys like this are called rye, although no minimum percentage of rye-grain whiskey is required in a blend.
