Pendleton Canadian Whisky Review
This article originally appeared on cocktailenthusiast.com. Cocktail Enthusiast is now Bevvy.
Pendleton Whisky is a 10-year old blended Canadian whiskey. Its made with water from Mt. Hood in Oregon, and is bottled by Oregons Hood River Distillers, but since its distilled in Canada, Pendleton keeps its Canadian whiskey label.
On the nose, Pendleton Whisky is sweet, with notes of caramel and vanilla. The first sip is very sweet, with lots of brown sugar and molasses, almost reminiscent of an aged rum. A bit of rye spiciness and some smoke filters through to add more complexity to the spirit. It goes down smoothly without any harshness, and finishes with that same sweetness.
Add a bit of water or an ice cube, and the sweetness is tempered a bit, but the flavors become very muted and give way to more pronounced alcohol notes.
Overall, Pendletons not bad, but its not for me. That said, those with a sweet tooth might have found their new favorite dram, and I imagine Pendleton appealing to some drinkers who dont traditionally enjoy whiskey.

Pendleton Canadian Whiskys Story
Pendleton Whiskys namesake is none other than the greatest rodeo in the world: The Pendleton Round-Up. Drawing cowboys and spectators from leagues away, the competition has a rich heritage of hard work, camaraderie, and fond memories, so its no surprise that the whiskys foundation is the same.
While bottled in Pendleton, Oregon, Pendleton blends Canadian whiskies that are rooted and based in the time-honored tradition of easy sipping known to cowboys, and now shared with the rest of the world through this tried and true whisky lineup. These spirits are smooth but not watered down, complex but not harsh, and adventurous but not eccentric. They keep in step with the true nature of the Great Northwest.
Do Pendleton Blankets Keep You Warm
By weaving wool threads over cotton warp yarns, Pendleton creates small pockets inside the Yakima that help trap heat, making this blanket warm. It performed very well in our heat retention tests. Sitting outdoors or on the couch under this blanket is toasty warm though any wind will quickly change that.

About Pendleton Premium Canadian Whisky
Every locale has its own rules about whiskies. Bourbon whiskey must contain at least fifty percent corn in its mash bill. Scotch whiskies may not come in at higher than 93% ABV to allow the complex flavor of the drink to remain detecable. And Canadian whisky must only contain cereal grain. But one unspoken rule every style has in common is that it must tell a story.
Whisky is for the honest man and woman, working hard to build this world. And its the escape at the end of the day when their stories come to life, sometimes by the fire after back-breaking farm labor, and sometimes in the drawing room sharing cigars with gents. Its just a matter of finding the right whisky for sharing your story.

The Whiskey Rocks Verdict
Is it good?
Pendleton Whiskey is a fantastic sipping whiskey thats aged in oak barrels.
Overall, Pendleton Whiskey is quite mellow and goes down smoothly without any harshness. If you enjoy different types of whiskeys and scotch, then you should like this particular whiskey too. It is also a good bargain for someone seeking a better brand thats much older and drinkable than most Canadian whiskeys.
On the other hand, Pendleton Whiskey isnt for you if you dont have a sweet tooth or like primarily rye-based whiskeys. It has a somewhat overpowering rye spiciness and lots of sweetness the first sip is very sweet with lots of brown sugar and molasses.

Whats Good With Pendleton Whiskey
Best Rye: Alberta Rye Whisky Dark Batch
Canadian whisky will often include a rye whisky in the blend, and it imparts a spiciness that is the grains signature taste. Many downplay this and choose to concentrate on the smooth sweetness of corn whiskies, but others play it up. Alberta Rye Whisky Dark Batch is a brilliant find from Alberta Distillers, the countrys top rye whisky maker.
Starting off with two rye whiskies, the finished blend is 91 percent rye whisky, 8 percent bourbon, and 1 percent sherry. It’s bottled at 90 proof and the higher alcohol content ensures it has a big, bold flavor. The exciting elixir has a great spice backed by a smoky sweetness that is simply a joy to take in. Sip it or mix it into any rye whiskey cocktaileither way, its a great choice.
An import from Canada thats marketed by Minnesotas Phillips Distilling Co., Revel Stoke is the brand to look for when you want to simply have fun with flavors. Best known for its spiced whisky, Revel Stoke likes to stay on top of the trendiest flavors. The distillery has taken on apple, cinnamon, and honey whiskies, and even makes a pineapple whisky that is completely unique.
Peanut butter whisky is the latest craze in flavored whisky, and Revel Stokes version is one of the best. This is not just a sweet, nutty whisky, but it also has the brands spice notes hanging out in the background to make it a little more interesting. Be sure to mix it with raspberry liqueur for a yummy peanut butter and jelly shot.

Is It Possible To Wash Pendleton Wool

Best Things To Mix With Pendleton
- Cola: Whisky and Coke go together like apples and pie. Its available everywhere and the flavors of Canadian whisky and cola mix seamlessly.
- Ginger: Ginger ale compliments the fresh smooth finish of the glacier spring water in every Pendleton bottle. The spice of the ginger draws out the complexity in the whisky, and the carbonation adds an instant elevated element.
- Water: One of the best things about Pendleton whiskies is their complexity. No other whisky is produced the same way, and adding water will draw out the brighter notes, revealing more aspects than youd notice simply sipping neat.
- Sour: Sour cuts through the hot flavor of the alcohol while the citrus highlights the lighter notes in the whiskies.
- Lemonade: For an easy sipper, try pouring lemonade over a Pendleton whisky in a tall glass. It has the same general effect that sour does, mellowed out.

Best Single Barrel: Caribou Crossing Single Barrel Canadian Whisky
Caribou Crossing is a Sazerac brand that was the first Canadian single barrel whisky. While others may have grabbed onto the trend, it remains a favorite and is certainly a top-shelf Canadian whisky that every aficionado should know. The whisky used for this blend is the cream of the crop from the Old Montreal Distillery and is bottled in Kentucky at Buffalo Trace. The whisky inside is as beautiful as the vessel it comes in. It’s richly complex and ultra-smooth, with toffee sweetness fading into a creamy oak finish that has a hint of pepper.
This single barrel whisky is definitely at the high end of the Canadian whisky market. Its excellent straight and will shine in very simple cocktails. Save it for special occasions and savor its smoothness with every sip.
Lot 40 is an interesting whisky. Distilled entirely from rye in a copper pot still, the bottles available today are a throwback to an 18th-century Ontario whisky and a time when rye whisky was Canadas specialty. The modern brand originally launched in the 1990s and was discontinued in the 2000s, but has since been brought back to life. Todays version is produced at the Hiram Walker Distillery in Windsor, Ontario and continues the small-batch tradition.
Best Age Statement: Jp Wiser’s 15 Year Old
This JP Wisers whisky is a bartender favorite. It’s a blend of mature grain whiskies with a hint of rye spice, says Pablo Guerrero, the food and beverage manager of Azabu Miami Beach. After being aged for 15 years, we have a rich and smooth mix of flavors like dried fruits, toffee, spices and a very little touch of green apples. There is no need to break the bank, as it is a good value whisky and a fantastic digestif to end a memorable dinner.

Best To Drink Neat: Collingwood Canadian Whisky
From the Collingwood, Ontario distillery that produces Canadian Mist, Collingwood is as sippable as that whisky is mixable. This one may not have the same household recognition, but it has won numerous awards and is a premium upgrade that is worth savoring.
The base whiskies for Collingwood are distilled from mostly Ontario-grown corn, rye, and barley. The blending water comes from the Georgian Bay, and flavoring whiskies are added to the final blend. Yet, it’s the finishing touch of resting the mature blended whisky that gives the Collingwood its distinct characteristic. The whisky has a maple syrup sweetness accented with vanilla and oak that leads to a long, warm finish. It is a sweet, soft dram thats 80 proof, so its not for drinkers who like the bolder bottles. However, it is impeccably smooth and very easy to drink straight.
Is Pendleton Whiskey Blended
A blend of whiskies from Canada, Pendleton Whisky is a super premium whisky. The flavor is rich and complex, with an unusual taste. The water used in this beverage is glacier-fed spring water from Mount Hood in Oregon. Despite its complexity, Pendleton Whisky offers an uncommonly smooth and balanced taste.

Best Budget: Canadian Club 100% Rye
Courtesy of reservebar
Canadian Club is a well-known brand in the U.S., mostly for its extremely popular and affordable blended whisky. But this 100% rye whisky, which is aged in a few different barrel types, is a great example of Canadian rye and will usually cost around $20 a bottle. This is not the most intense rye whisky experience you’ll find, but its certainly a good deal. Crafted by Alberta Distillers, this spirit has caramel and oak notes.
What Does A Pendleton Blanket Feel Like
The blanket isnt super heavy, but I do find it comforting that its heavier than my regular blanket. It feels like a weighted blanket, but to a lesser degree. These blankets are machine-washable, and mine havent shrunk, faded, or pilled in the four years Ive had them since theyre made from wool.

Best Overall: Forty Creek Confederation Oak
This is an excellent expression from the Grimsby, Ontario distillery. Confederation Oak was created to commemorate Canadas 1867 Confederation. Its a blended whisky that is finished for up to two years in new Canadian oak barrels, which the distillery says have a tighter grain because of the colder climate. Look for notes of praline, honey and dark fruits on the palate.
