Number One Beer In America

Blue Moon Belgian White Ale

Itchyworms – Beer (Official Lyric Video)

Sales in U.S. dollars: $164,200,000

Inspired by citrusy Belgian witbiers that commonly infuse Curaçao orange peel during the brewing process, brewmaster Keith Villa crafted his own version in 1995using Valencia orange peel and a hint of coriander, plus oats and wheat for a creamy texture. He then served it with an orange garnish and called it Blue Moon Belgian White Ale. The beer has been raking in hundreds of millions of dollars ever since, accounting for a significant percentage of MillerCoors bottom line.

Region: Massachusetts | ABV: 4%| Tasting Notes: cracker, herbs, hops

Notch Brewing has been making amazing low-alcohol Bavarian and Czech lagers for a while now and are consistently putting out new products that focus on classic styles but keeping innovative and relevant at the same time, Gilinsky says. Its Session Pils Czech Pale Lager is an easy-drinking brew that may skimp on the ABV, but not on the flavor, with plenty of citrus flavor with a bit of floral hops.

Americas New Number One Brewery

Which brewing company is Americas largest? The answer may seem obvious at first. You might think it is Anheuser-Busch, the makers of Bud Light and Budweiser. Nope, think again. Next guess, it must be MillerCoors, the makers of Coors Light. Wrong again. The largest American brewing company is D.G. Yuengling and Son of Pottsville, PA. Americas oldest brewery is now the largest as well. This information comes from Beer Marketers Insight, a leading source of beer industry information.

It is kind of a trick question. Americas biggest American beer brands are not really American beer at all anymore. Is your Honda an America car just because the Japanese company assembled it in Alabama?

It is not breaking news for anyone who pays attention, but Anheuser-Busch is a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch Inbev, a Belgian-based company. MillerCoors is a joint venture of Englands SAB Miller and Molson-Coors, which operates out of Montreal and Denver but is not an American company. Even if you drink Pabst Blue Ribbon, a brand owned by an American investment firm, you are not drinking beer brewed by an American company. PBR outsources the brewing of its beer to MillerCoors, unless something has changed. Its hard to keep track these days.

Emergence Of Small Breweries

By the 1970s, consolidation and dominance by the country’s major brewers led to the fewest breweries in the country’s modern history. Despite this, the period also saw the beginnings of the country’s current craft beer movement. In 1976, optical engineer and homebrewerJack McAuliffe founded New Albion Brewing Company in Sonoma County, California, becoming the nation’s first microbrewery since Prohibition. Influenced by Fritz Maytag’s recent turnaround of the Anchor Brewing Company and an earlier military stationing in Scotland, McAuliffe’s brewery offered bottle-conditioned porter, stout, and pale ale to a public more accustomed to lightly flavored lagers. Despite only staying in business for seven years, New Albion ignited an interest in craft beer and set a precedent for a generation of craft brewers, including Ken Grossman and the owners of Mendocino Brewing Company, the nation’s first brewpub.

As far as beer names go, few can hold a candle to the origin story of Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald. The Ohio brewery named the porter after the famous freighter, which mysteriously sank to the bottom of Lake Superior in 1975. It has inspired songs, poems, and a beer brewed with roasted barley. The beer has won over a dozen awards, including golds at the Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Championship.

The 25 Most Popular Beers In America According To Yougov

Everybody knows Americans love beer. Its ubiquitous in everything from day-to-day life to pop culture, where youd be hard-pressed to find a show or movie that doesnt depict a rugged main character ending the workday with a slug of an ice-cold brew. But which beer is Americas favorite?

While you may expect this to be a polarizing and impossible-to-answer query, it turns out that may not be the case.

The international market and data analytics website YouGov tackled this very question by aggregating the likeability ratings on a list of popular beers. Each rating was calculated using the amount of nationally surveyed individuals who noted their feelings toward the particular beer as positive. These ratings were then placed in comparison with the others on the list to come up with a final ranking.

Here are the 25 beers Americans love the most, according to YouGovs findings.

    Pale Lager And Malt Liquor

While craft brewing companies with myriad style offerings continue to gain market share, the best-selling style of beer made in the U.S. is still pale lager, most often made by most large-scale brewers, including Anheuser-Busch InBev and MillerCoors. These large-scale brewers also produce other popular styles, often relatively light in body, flavor and calories. Light beer, which was introduced on a large scale by Miller Brewing Company in the early 1970s, is a beer made with reduced alcohol and carbohydrate content, and has grown to eclipse many of the original pale lager brands in sales. Bud Light, brewed by Anheuser-Busch InBev, is the top-selling beer in the United States. Ice beer is an example which has been partially freeze-distilled with the intention of concentrating flavor and alcohol. The technique is based on that used to make Eisbock, but the two styles share no stylistic similarities otherwise. Dry beer, a Japanese style based on pale lager, is also brewed by some American companies. In dry beer, the yeast is encouraged to consume more fermentables, resulting in a crisper finish and an unusually subtle hop flavor.

Malt liquor is a high-ABV pale lager. It has often incited controversy due to its alcohol content, larger-sized containers, low prices, and advertising that frequently targets inner city neighborhoods.

    Beer Sales Take A Hit

On paper, the beer category accounts for 17 percent share of sales on Drizly. But that doesnt tell the whole story. When the hard seltzer category is removed from the equation, beer sales drop to just 13 percent of overall sales, down from 15 percent share in 2020.

The share decline in the core beer category share can be attributed to the growth in single-serve options in other categories including hard alternatives seltzer, tea, lemonade, kombucha, etc. and RTDs, says Liz Paquette, Drizlys head of consumer insights.

Recent data from Nielsen states that core beer sales over the Memorial Day week in 2021 grew just 1.9 percent from the holiday in 2019 . That growth is pretty minimal when you consider the fact that hard seltzers were up 297 percent compared to 2019 sales.

According to Adam Rogers, the North American research director at IWSR Drinks Market Analysis, the pandemic and taproom closures had a major impact on the category as well. Rapid levels of innovation from competing categories, primarily RTDs and spirits, have caused consumers to stray from the beer category, he says.

Many breweries were not able to maintain their pre-pandemic levels of new product launches, Rogers adds. With taproom closures and increase in more traditional retail sales during Covid, there was an effect on on-site consumption, since consumer feedback is a main driver for product testing prior to entering distribution.
