Just like vodka before it, whiskey is experiencing a boomtime-driven expansion into the area of flavored liquor. These days it seems every big distillery is either getting into secondary maturation, or barrel finishing, or producing flavored whiskey. Honey whiskey has been getting much of the attention lately, both in the U.S. and the U.K., but its not the only player in flavoring whiskey, as Bird Dog amply demonstrates.
Hawking its wares under the tagline this dog dont bite, Bird Dogs line begins and ends with flavored bourbon. Because the whiskey does not bear the appellation straight, and because Bird Dog does not claim to have its own distillery, we know that the bourbon in question is both sourced and under two years old. Add to that the knowledge that flavored whiskey of this type is usually meant for cocktails , and the questions become 1) what does the flavoring do for the immature whiskey 2) is that enough to make it drinkable on its own?
The BourbonBird Dog Peach is bottled at 80 proof in a clear glass bottle with a nice wood and cork stopper. That in and of itself is something noteworthy, since you dont see too many fifth-bottles of whiskey in the $20 range sporting a nice stopper like that.
PriceAnother big virtue of Bird Dog Peach is the price: a full 750ml bottle typically runs $20.

I drink Scotch, Irish, Canadian and American whiskey. Although Im happy to try any offering of any of the above. In fairness, I love bourbon.
Yet I do exclude any whiskey that is flavored or infused with something to alter the beautiful elixir that comes from our aging barrels. I say this upfront to point out that Im not an unbiased observer. Just as I do not want my cigars infused, I dont want my Whiskey infused. My bias is for a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey consumed neat.
Thats what makes this review so interesting for me. My managing editor asked if I would be willing to review a sample of Heaven Hills newest offering of Evan Williams Peach Bourbon. Its another in their series of flavored bourbons including peach, cherry, honey and cinnamon. I should also mention I am a huge fan of Elijah Craig, also from Heaven Hill, makers of Evan Williams.
The Evan Williams website describes their new bourbon as:
- PROOF: 70 Proof
- NOSE: Fresh, sweet Peach with Bourbon behind
- TASTE: Sweet peach with hints of honey & caramel
- FINISH: Bourbon is present, with a lasting soft sweetness.
My observances included a nose that was purely peach and a taste and finish that matched. In addition, I would describe the color as a soft peach orange.
I tried the Evan Williams peach bourbon three different ways. Not believing I could drink it neat, I tried it over a large glass of ice. I drank it all, but it was too sweet and too peachy for me to really enjoy.

I served up this whiskey in a straight shot and on the rocks. Bird Dog falls a bit short on this one. Contrary to the company line, this whiskey isnt good for sipping or shots, its too strawberry forward, with an almost medicinal quality and unfortunately, the strawberry doesnt fade into a subtle warm bourbon finish.
