How To Sell Vintage Whiskey

Your Local Whisky Bar

Buying and Selling Your Vintage Whiskey-Legally!

Personally, I prefer to try new expressions by the finger and not by the bottle. So, the best advice is to become familiar and friendly with the dramslingers at your local whisky bar.

Any pub may do but ones known;for their whisky collections tend to keep more of the best stuff on hand, stored properly.

I often work with Mike & Chris at my favorite bar to find new things to try. Having a chat with them lets me know what people are drinking and what the feedback has been.

Note that being a nice, well mannered, respected regular at a whisky bar often leads to complimentary samples, special orders, and heavy pours. Plus nothing beats a tipple in a room where everybody knows your name.

Selling Whisky Via An Online Broker

Selling your whisky via a licenced whisky broker is a legal alternative to selling via an online auction. A broker helps you find a buyer for your item in this case whisky and charges you a commission on the sale price of the bottle. It is therefore in the brokers interest to get you the best possible price.

Selling whisky through an online broker gives you much more control over the sale of your whisky compared to an auction. If you dont agree with the offer price you simply keep hold of your bottle and keep looking for a buyer.

We make the process of selling your bottle really simple. You just send in a few images of your bottle standing upright. We then forward the images to our clients and send you the highest offer we receive. The offers are without obligation so if the offer is not right for you then there is no need to proceed.

If you want to proceed then we send you out a contract and you send us your bottle. We even have a subsidised and fully insured courier service that you can use where we send specialist packaging material and a pre-paid returns label. We then complete the sale with the buyer and send you the proceeds minus our commission and courier charge if you use it via BACS.

We have hundreds of five-star reviews on Google, Yell and Facebook and are really proud of the level of customer service we provide.

Has The Coronavirus Affected Bottle Selling Prices In 2021

There were some concerns at the start of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic that we would see a drop in bottle prices. However despite some distilleries stopping production the secondary market for rare bottles seems to have continued as normal.

As of April 2021 online auctions have continued to take place, online retailer continue to buy and sell and bottle prices seem relatively steady.

A Note Of Caution: Online Fraud In 2021

With the rise in the value of single malt, there have been greater instances of fraud in the market.

Selling your whisky online can be a seamless experience if it is done through a reputable company. Before you decide to sell you should always do your research on the company/website through which you are selling.;

Look at the reviews. Are they verified? Are they numerous? Have the people that have reviewed the company done so for multiple other companies? Sometimes a business will buy fake reviews, so it is important to be vigilant.;

If in doubt, ask for a second opinion or suggestions from a trusted source, use Companies House as a background check and look for verified reviews from trusted sources.

Verticals & Large Collections

How to sell whisky online

In 2020, we made headlines around the world when we sold a vertical of Macallan 18 Year Olds for one of our clients.

Pete Robson bought a bottle of Macallan 18 year old every year since 1992, as a birthday present for his son, Matthew. The collection consisted of 28 bottles by the time Matthew decided to sell the collection through our brokerage service.

We sold the collection to a private buyer in Asia for £44,000. Matthew planned to use the money to put down a deposit on a house.

As such, a yearly birthday present from father to son turned out to be a brilliant investment that will now help Matthew put a foot on the property ladder. It also serves as a visual history lesson that details the development of Macallan, an internationally renowned whisky brand.

We have also sold a vertical of Port Ellen Annual Releases, and we are currently selling the ultimate Collectors Collection of whisky for £86,020.;

Sell Whiskey Online: How To Sell Whiskey Online

Whiskey was first developed around 1000 AD, when Scottish and Irish monasteries started fermenting mashed grains. This method was originally used as a replacement for grapes, because northern Europe didnt have access to traditional vineyards for winemaking. Despite this, whiskey has remained incredibly popular and is used in some of the most popular cocktails around the world.;

As whiskey spread from European countries to other nations, many people have put their own twist on the fermentation and distillation process. Canadian, Japanese, and American whiskey all bring their own flavor profiles to the table. United States consumers love their whiskey, with bourbon and rye whiskey regularly topping favorite drink lists.

Selling Whisky At A Traditional Auction

We cant write a guide to selling whisky without mentioning the traditional bricks and mortar salerooms, as they were the birthplace of the resale market for whisky. Although they used to have a monopoly on the market, all of the above options have really eaten into their dominance and traditional auctions are now sadly in decline.

High commission rates for buyers and sellers and the lack of focused marketing are the main reasons for this demise.

Many of the traditional salerooms sell antiques and collectors items as their mainstay, with whisky being a small part of their calendar of sales. As such, their marketing budgets for whisky are often not as high as the online options so they do not achieve the same reach to the specialist buyers and often dont achieve the best prices.

The real nail in the coffin for the traditional salerooms though is the commission they charge both the buyer and seller. Standard selling fees are 18% for the seller AND 28.8% for the buyer. What that means is you only receive 53% of what the buyer had to pay for your bottle. The high buyers premium is taken into account by buyers and as such they reduce their bids accordingly.

Develop An Ecommerce Marketing Strategy

In addition to sales, marketing is the lifeblood of any business. You need to understand not only where your customers are and what they want, but how to persuade them. This is accomplished by being authentic, demonstrating legitimate expertise, and using relevant marketing channels.

Here are some worthwhile marketing strategies to leverage:;

  • Create content regularly. The Internet offers anyone with ambition and skill to attract the buyers they want. You can use eCommerce SEO to create useful, informative, and entertaining content that people will click on. The more you can answer your target audiences questions, the more likely they are to purchase.;
  • Set a reasonable budget. The important question is not whether you have $500 or $50,000 for marketing, but how youre using it. An eCommerce PPC campaign can be successful if you know how to structure your ads. Combined with excellent copywriting, youll be seen as an experienced business rather quickly. Prospects will see your ads in contextual spaces and take action based on your compelling calls-to-action .;

Selling Whisky Via An Online Retailers

Another way to sell your whisky online legally is to sell direct it to a whisky retailer. There are dozens of retailers online and they will buy your stock to re-sell on their websites. Although retailers were once a very popular way of selling whisky online the majority are wary of buying stock at the height of the market so they are often quite coy with their offers.

Buying collectiblesBuy from reputable sellers. If you dont know who that person is or the particulars of the bottle youre considering, find people to help you make those decisions. Find someone whos touched and seen tens of thousands of bottles, someone who has that experience. Look closely at the cork and the seal for any leakage, and look for any sun damage to the whiskey or the label.

On storage temperatureBeing away from light and stored at a consistent temperature is the best for whiskey. Stay within four to five degrees of room temperature; high 60s or low 70s. We dont know of any effects of electric lights on whiskey, but we know direct sunlight is a problem.

Storing bottles standing or on their sidesStore them standing up. Dont store a bottle on its side; the alcohol will eat the cork. If you know youre going to open an old bottle in the near future, wet the cork every couple of days by the bottle on its side and then turning it right back up and put it back on the shelf.

If you leave any American Whiskey bottle on its side for a long period of time, it will leak. Air eats away at the richness and brightness of the whiskey.

On handling bottlesYou only want your fingers to make contact with the glass. I dont ever touch the label or the capsule. Thats the area made up of whatever the bottle is closed with: a screw top or cork or waxwhatever goes around the top, tax strip or foil.

Wise Whiskey Collecting

Is It A Limited Edition

A limited edition is defined as one that is not part of a distillery or brands core range. This can be anything from a themed release of many thousand bottles, to a very small number of bottles that have been obtained from a single cask. Scarcity is, as you can imagine, a factor that affects value.

Old Unopened Bottles Of Whiskey

Note: If you have found an old bottle and are looking for resources to evaluate or sell it, you can find a short list here: Whiskey, Rum and Old Spirit Bottle Price Evaluators. For background information on stability and drinkability, read below.

It seems people are finding lots of old bottles of whisky that are still sealed and are wondering whether they are still good and what the value of the bottle would be. For the most part, any bottle of unsealed high proof spirit should be safe as weve seen by the sales of very old scotch whiskies. As for the value of these old bottles, it will depend on the type of spirit and the stated age and how old the bottle is. For example, a bottle of Glenavon whisky from 1851 sold for about $29,000. The bottles that will attract the most interest would be anything pre-prohibition, or items that are out of production.

Unlike wine, once whisky, and spirits in general, are bottled they dont age. Technically there can still be some changes going on, if let says the bottle was exposed to light for a long period of time, but for the most part, once bottled high proof spirits dont age. The reason wine ages are because of the chemical nature of the wine. The compounds in grapes tend to oxidize and soften the wine over time. This is a good characteristic for wine. When spirits are aged, they pick up flavours from the oak barrels and thats about it.
