With its smoky and sweet flavor tones and a huge degree of versatility, rum has been a staple among spirit connoisseurs and partygoers alike. If you want to know how to drink rum, it is worth bearing in mind that it is a more confusing spirit than most.

Unlike drinks such as vodka and gin, rum comes in a mind-boggling variety. There is spiced rum, white rum, aged rum, and black rum, to name just a few.

In order to get the most out of your rum cocktail recipes, it helps to know the essential rum drinking rules to guide you through. With these five rules for drinking rum, you will always be able to craft perfect rum cocktails, whatever the occasion.

But If You Drink Rum Every Night You Can Gain Weight

Just because drinking rum instead of beverages like beer, wine, and sweetened cocktails might be a better choice for your waistline, that doesn’t mean drinking rum every night will make you lose weight. In fact, you might find yourself gaining weight if you drink rum every night, according to registered dietitian Amanda A. Kostro Miller. “You may be more inclined to overeat,” she revealed to The List. “Alcohol may make you eat a late night heavy meal or just make you forget about any health/weight goals/calorie intake goals you may be striving to follow.” So if you’re eating well all day, then dig into a big bag of chips after having a rum and diet coke or two, one of the best cheap mixed drinks to order at a bar, you’re less likely to stay trim.

On top of that, if you’re really working hard to stick to a healthy eating routine, sabotaging that can come with additional problems. “Not being able to successfully accomplish your health/nutrition/weight loss goals may be stress-inducing for some people,” Kostro Miller added.

Seriously Never Drink More Than Three Rum Drinks

Hemingway, I aint. The thing to remember about rum is that its most often mixed with another sugary beverage, like juice, coconut cream or cola. Thats a surefire recipe for a hangover when consumed in large quantities. And theres no better way to make enemies with a spirit than to have one bad night and an even worse morning. Hemingway may have been able to drink Daiquiris all day and all night, but hes special.

This past winter, an unseasonably warm day in Brooklyn reminded me of my Mojito obsession. So I filled a 32-ounce water bottle with light rum, sugar, muddled mint, the juice of one lime, ice and seltzer. My husband and I sipped it while taking turns helping our toddler ride her scooter on the sidewalk. Fast forward 30 minutes and my new plan was feed the child dinner, skip my own and drink more rum. See? Trouble. Even as a rum aficionado I nearly made enemies with the spirit. Take caution.

Rum is like your BFF who encourages you to wile out just a little more than you should, and thats part of the charm. But before you can control that relationship, you need to gain some appreciation. Its worth it.

If Your Drink Rum Every Night You May Build A Tolerance To It

The surprising age you have to be to legally drink alcohol ...

Have you chosen to drink rum every night for some time? If so, have you noticed that you need to drink a bit more than you used to in order to feel its effects? If that’s the case, then you’re far from the outlier, according to registered dietitian Laura Krebs-Holm. “Many people find that if they drink alcohol regularly, they do not feel the effects of alcohol as keenly with one or two drinks,” she shared with The List. “However, health benefits have only been linked to moderate alcohol consumption, which is one drink for women, and two drinks for men.”

So if you’ve noticed that you do in fact need more rum to feel bubbly and happy, chances are your alcohol tolerance is higher than it used to be. And since a high tolerance is a major risk factor of alcoholism, according to CBS News, you might want to talk to your doctor if you’re concerned it’s too high.

Best Rum For A Rum And Coke

One of the things that sets this cocktail apart is that it is one of the few drinks people order using the name of their preferred rum, ordering it as a Bacardi Coke or Captain Coke. This is due in part to effective marketing campaigns by Bacardi and Captain Morgan and to how much the drink changes based on the rum being used.

There are four main types of rum white, gold, aged, and spiced. Each of them brings something different to the party.

You Might Have A Hangover In The Morning If You Drink Rum Every Night

If you drink rum every night and always go hard with it, there’s a good chance you might wind up with a hangover the next morning. And as noted by Dr. Regina Krel, a headache medicine specialist at Hackensack University Medical Center, there’s a lot going on when you have a hangover. “The actual mechanism of what happens during a hangover is still not clear but is thought to be a result of the toxicity of acetaldehyde on the body, changes in electrolytes, dehydration, and low blood sugar,” she penned in an article for Hackensack Meridian Health. “The most common symptoms during a hangover include headache, nausea, dizziness, feeling sleepy or sluggish.” Yuck.

So if you wake up every morning with a hangover, you may want to cut back on the amount of rum you drink every night. Additionally, make sure you’re eating enough while drinking, as well as avoiding sugars and drinking plenty of water those actions can help you prevent a hangover, according to the Mayo Clinic. And fortunately there are a few breakfasts that can help cure your hangover that you can enjoy the next morning like breakfast tacos.

    What Type Of Coca

This is one of those small things that most people donât think about when theyâre mixing up a rum and coke. There are two different types of Coca-cola available in the States that have fairly different flavor profiles.

Thereâs the everyday Coke that is available everywhere and Mexican Coke that comes in tall glass bottles and is becoming more available in grocery stores and bodegas. The major difference between them is that everyday Coke is made with high fruticose corn syrup and the Mexican Coke, named because thatâs where its bottled, is made with sugar cane.

When you taste the two side by side their differences are easy to spot. The Coke made in the States is very flavor forward, with a hint of bitterness, especially at the beginning. While the Mexican Coke is smoother with less of an aftertaste.

What is particularly interesting about the Mexican Coke is that it tastes more like what I remember Coke tasting like then the stuff I drink all the time.

Two final tips, donât make this recipe with Pepsi unless you like them cloying like sweet and always use lots of ice. Both the rum and the Coke in this recipe are better when theyâre cold. And, if youâre looking for a variation that is a little more off the beaten path try our recipe.

    Delicious Food Pairings With Rum

As with most liquors that have a dense palate, rum is very versatile with food.

It can be enjoyed as an aperitif or digestif, before or after meals. It can be drunk with hearty meals like steak and poultry, but can also be used as a dessert drink, with sweets like chocolate cake and macaroons.

If you travel to the Caribbean, youll likely see this drink served with some fish-centered dishes.

One commonly served with rum is ceviche, a Latin American plate of raw fish cured in citrus, tomatoes, onions, and spices. Ceviche is paired well with citrusy cocktails like the rum cooler or rum cosmo.

Its always a safe option to go with cheese, as well. Fresh, cut slices of cheese and salty, crunchy crackers match beautifully with the bold flavor of rum.

Our favorite food pairings are a sweet rum punch and some aged Swiss on a baked cracker. This is a mature blend of flavors thatll have you snacking all night long.

If Your Knowledge On Rum Only Goes As Far As Half

One day, us folk came clean about our rum expertise, which amounted to a trickle. We had questions and needed answers! So, who did we ask?

Master blender Nelson Hermandez. Not only is he a rum expert, but he also represents Diplomático, who produce eco-friendly rum. The brand is pioneering sustainable alcohol, and we reckon thats worth a cheers.

HAPPY: Long-time rum appreciator here, but an absolute novice when it comes to the right way to drink it. For those as clueless as I, is there an agreed-upon way to properly taste a new rum?

NELSON: How to taste rum relies solely on the experience of the eyes, nose and tongue, ultimately working together quite symphonically to celebrate each unique rum taste.

Start by observing the density of any rum you are about to bring to your lips. Do this by swirling the liquid around the glass and looking out for what are known as legs. Legs should ideally run slowly down the sides of your glass this indicates a dense blend that has been well aged and offers a higher alcohol content.

Its not time to sip just yet, your nose needs a second to make the rums acquaintance. Smell the rum to pick up on initial aromas that may offer a point of reference once it later hits the tongue.

HAPPY: What makes for ideal tasting conditions? Are there any common drinking practices rum lovers should avoid?

HAPPY: Lets talk mixers. With a dark rum like Diplomático, should you be using it with a mixer?

    The Sordid History Of Rum

As I previously mentioned, rum is often perceived as being the drink of choice for scallywags and bootleggers. Unfortunately, thats rather accurate, at least with rums beginnings. While the first fermented beverage from sugar cane juice was produced a few millennia ago, it wasnt until the 1600s in the Caribbean that it was distilled and first resembled the rum we know today. In that time, distilling was a practice that most folks were familiar with. Whiskey and brandy were fairly common drinks in Europe, so when the Brits brought their stills to the Caribbean, it was only a matter of time before cane juice or molasses was run through them. It may have even been slaves that first produced rum, and they were definitely given rum by their masters, largely to placate them. In fact, rum production played a large part in the Atlantic triangular slave trade. Sugar, most often in the form of molasses, was traded from the Caribbean to New England, where it was distilled into rum. That rum was sold, and along with other raw goods was sent to Europe. From there those raw goods turned into manufactured products like guns, clothing, etc., which were traded with African kings for slaves, who were then sent to the Caribbean to work on sugar plantations. And so rum and slavery became forever connected.

How to Make Hot Buttered Rum

Years of marketing has turned rum into a summer-only spirit. It is the drink of choice when you are partying by the beach or, more likely, on a brief tropical vacation. But you shouldnt put rum into such a small and limiting box. It can be so much more versatile.

Take, for example, that wintertime staple and masterpiece of cocktail wizardry, the Hot Buttered Rum. The very classic concoction dates back to the early days of the American Republic, and if you ask me, topping an alcoholic drink with butter is the best idea ever. Id dare say it is better than a Hot Toddy, and Im downright obsessed with whiskey.

I say boo to seasonality when it comes to alcohol. And, since were on the topic, wine as well. I love a chilled white in the winter. Dont at me.
