What Is The Best Rum On The Market

This Is What You Need To Know About The Sliced Apple Spiced Rum

What Is A Haitian Market? What Is The Best Rum In The World? |Travel Video (Guesthost: Mike)

Sometimes, all we want to do on a chilly fall night is cuddle up by the fire with a fuzzy blanket and our favorite drink. Wellmaybe more like all the time. You might choose a steaming mug of hot chocolate, but I like a boozy beverage. In fall, rum is usually my go-to, and apples and cinnamon are my all-time favorite flavor combination. So you can bet Im over the MOON for this Captain Morgan debut.

While Captain was already so smooth, adding apple to the mix made it even smoother. The sweetness of fruit and rum go together extremely well, and both manage to warm you up exactly when you need it most. Anything apple totally screams fall, and this rum would go spectacularly well with apple cider. Spoiler alertIve tried it, and its to DIE for!

Captain and Coke might be the first rum drink that you think of, but there are quite a few others to try.

What’s The Difference Between White And Dark Rum

There are plenty of rum varieties, differentiated based on colour, strength and spice. Youre more likely to sip a dark rum and mix a white rum. This is due to the methods of maturation. A white rum is typically aged for a shorter time and in steel tanks, while dark rums are usually aged for longer in oak barrels, which impart more mellow and chewable flavours.

There are exceptions to the rule, of course some white rums are aged in barrels and then filtered to remove the signature golden colour. Whether you like them young and sharp or old and mellow, weve narrowed down the best white rums on the market today.

Rivers Royale Grenadian Rum

This is some of the cultiest rum around, made entirely without the use of electricity, from the water wheel powering the cane crusher to the foraged wood fires fueling the copper pot stills, this place is literally pre-industrial. It also hasn’t been available in America until now. If you’re the kind of person who enjoys supersonic dundery Jamaican rums and intensely tropical rhum agricole, you will not be disappointed.

What Are The Best Rum Cocktails

Let’s be honest, almost everything tastes better with rum. Thanks to its numerous flavour varieties, rum can effortlessly blend with a variety of mixers including cola, ginger ale, lime juice or even just orange juice. But the best cocktails? Those are the ones that let the rum sit centre stage. The most iconic among them including a tropical rum punch , the Mojito , Piña Coladas and the more spicy Dark And Stormy .

  • FLOR DE CANA

Flor de Cana from the mountains of Nicaragua

Nicaraguan rum, lighter in flavour than most of the rum from the English-speaking countries. The rum is said by some to be genetically linked to Cuba, its revolutionary brother.

The rum distinguishes itself by being fair trade certified and sustainably sourced, carbon neutral premium rum, naturally aged without any sugar or additives.

Prices range from about £27 for the five-year-old Black Label to £122 for the premier 25-year-old.

  • ANGOSTURA

Angostura 1919 leaves no bitter taste

Angostura may be better known globally for its bitters, but many Trinidadians think it also produces the greatest rum. Most Jamaicans would disagree and may have put in the recesses of their collective mind that the Trinidadian company once owned Appleton, not very long ago. Fortunately for the state of Jamaican pride, Angustora got into financial difficulties and eventually sold its Jamaican rum holding to the Italian spirits giant, Campari.

But Angustora rum is the pride and joy of Trinidads rum industry and does have a distinct flavour. For anyone fortunate enough to go to Trinidads carnival, if you dont like it now, you will learn to like it then, as it flows liberally everywhere.

A bottle of the popular Angostura 1919 containing some eight-year-old rum will cost about £33 and the more distinct 12-year-old Angustora 1824 will go for about £60.

Smith & Cross Pure Pot Still

Trying to figure out the story behind Smith & Cross can lead down a lot of rabbit holes. The name purportedly dates back to the 18th century, but this rum is a creation of the 2000s. For years it was said to have been a product of the famed Hampden Estate distillery, but in fact its a blend from several different distilleries. Which ones? We dont quite know. It claims to be navy strength at 57 percent ABV, but research has shown that genuine navy strength rum is actually 54.5 percent. But what is indisputable is that Smith & Cross has established itself as the entry point to old-school Jamaican pot still rum, which is to the rum world what Islay is to Scotch whiskyintensely flavorful, funky and weird . Its not for everyone, but for those who love it, the first sip almost a life-changing experience. There are more sought-after Jamaican pot still expressions, but Smith & Cross remains both a great place to start and a most enjoyable rum for those already in the know.

British Navy Pusser’s Rum Gunpowder Proof Original Admiralty Strength

Incredibly, not all of the last rations of official Navy rum were consumed back in 1970. Barrels of it were stored in Gibraltar for the next decade with the last of the supply available these days for around £650 a bottle. Pussers gained the rights to re-create the rum according to the last recipe the Navy used ideal for those who dont fancy shelling out the cost of a return flight to Kingston for a bottle. Blended from five West Indian rums, the label is a no-nonsense design classic and the taste itself is absolutely unreconstructed with an unrepentant treacle and tobacco kick. Defiantly old school and suitable for those for whom enemy fire, force-ten gales and sickly parrots hold no palpable fear. £39.95.masterofmalt.comand

Centuries Ago Rum Was Distilled From Useless Molasses That Was Left To Spoil In The Tropical Heat And Humidity For Weeks Before Fermenting

Sipped straight off the still, no one was willing to wait for long-aging in a barrel for the spirit to soften hence nicknames, kill-devil and demon rum.

Today, rum results are aromatically far funkier and pleasantly pungent depending on time, technology, and tropical location. Below is a breakdown of ten recognized rum brands across various Caribbean islands each using selective distillation, filtration, and long-barrel aging to soften rums heat under the scorching sun.

Rhum Barbancourt

Rhum Barbancourt

Haiti

Only in Cognac production do pot stills employ a double distillation system for crafting a fine spirit.

In 1862, Dupré Barbancourt of Charente, France carried the successful process to Port-au-Prince, Haiti applying it to rhum-making choosing fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses found on surrounding islands.

He later diverted from the original process, implementing an efficient three-column continuous distillation system instead where the first column strips the solid matter from the wash and the second and third columns serve to concentrate Rhum Barbancourt.

The liquid sits in French oak barrels then passes through a compounded blending system to impart purity and ensure consistency before bottled additive-free.

Lets not forget the disastrous earthquake that shattered the Caribbean country back in 2010. It robbed the famed distillery of nearly one-third of its aged stock, valued around $4 million!

Best Overall Rum: Plantation Barbados 5 Years

Distiller: Foursquare Distillery Country of Origin: Barbados

Dubbed the Pappy of rum, the celebrated distillery behind this limited edition expression is helmed by fourth-generation trader and distiller and renowned rum advocate Richard Seale. This formidable cask strength expression a pot and column still blend aged separately in ex-Bourbon barrels for 12 years before marrying in the bottle is as exceptional as it is accessible. Cream and apple pie bursts on the nose while tropical fruit plays across the palate, followed by a rush of toffee and peppery oak that lingers.

Foursquare Exceptional Cask Criterion

Richard Seales influence on the rum industry cant be overstated. He was an early and vocal guardian of rum, as he puts it, exposing the fact that age statements on bottles can often be wishful thinking, and that many of the most popular rums were frequently marred by the addition of sugar, glycerin, vanillin and countless other artificial colors and flavors. He also happened to make rumhe owns the Foursquare distillery in Barbadosthat was untainted by additives, aged entirely in the tropics and often bottled at cask strength. Seale wants rum to be treated with the same respect as whiskey, and in the last few years it seems like hes finally succeeded. With his Exceptional Cask Series, Seale embraced double cask maturation, in this case aging it for three years in ex-bourbon casks followed by seven years in very old Madeira casks. Bottled at 56 percent ABV, its quite sweet on first blush thanks to the Madeira cask, with raisin notes reminiscent of a sherry, but its beautifully balanced by the spice of the bourbon and the dryness of the oak. Foursquare has made enough great rums to have a top 21 list of its own, but this one gets the nod in part for historical significancelimited to 2,000 bottles worldwide, Criterion helped kick off a Foursquare mania in the States that has led some to call it the Pappy Van Winkle of rum.
