If you love tequila cocktails, then you cant miss these recipes. Were also covering the origins of tequila, the different types, and more!
What is tequila? Is it exquisite nectar blessed to us from the heavens? Or is it a distilled spirit harvested from the blue agave plant?
Our bets are on the latter, however if the tequila gods descended to the Earth and presented to us their finest tequila cocktails to boot, we wouldnt be surprised.
Because if there was anything wed have in common, it would be our love for the precious blue agave plant in all its intoxicating glory!
The Original Tequila Sunrise Recipe
The original tequila sunrise is sparkling, light, and features crème de cassis, a sweet black currant liqueur with a deep red color. To make this drink, pour 1 1/2 ounces of tequila and the juice of half a lime into a collins glass filled with ice. Top with club soda, then slowly pour 3/4 ounce crème de cassis into the drink. Garnish with a lime wheel and maraschino cherry.
Tips For The Best Tequila Sunrise
Because this tequila cocktail is so straightforward, you want to use the best possible ingredients. Im not saying you have to squeeze the orange juice yourself , but see if you can get your hands on juice thats not from concentrate.
In that same vein, buy a quality tequila as well. Remember: this drink has just three ingredients, so you want them all to taste good!
Lastly, its crucial that you do NOT stir the tequila sunrise after youve added the grenadine to it. The grenadine is supposed to sink to the bottom, thus making it look like a sunrise.

What Is 1800 Tequila Made From
Initially released in 1975, 1800 Tequila was one of the first premium tequilas offered in the United States. What may surprise you is that it is produced by Jose Cuervo at the same distilleryCasa Cuervowhere the biggest name in tequila is made.
Cuervo is located just outside the town of Tequila in Jalisco, Mexico, in the heart of tequila country. The old distillery complex is the perfect picturesque style of traditional Mexican architecture and culture. If you get a chance to tour it, you will not regret the experience .
The production process for 1800 Tequila is standard in the tequila industry. It follows most of the conventional processes and techniques followed by other tequila brands, including the use of 100% blue Weber agave.
To make the tequila, the agave plants are harvested once mature, which is around 8 to 12 years. They are baked in the distillery’s massive traditional clay brick ovens before the juice is extracted. The agave juice is then fermented with yeast, which turns the sugars into alcohol, and that is distilled twice in copper pot stills.
The white tequilas destined to be 1800 Silver are blended soon after distillation to form the tequila’s signature taste. Other tequilas are aged in American and French oak barrels until they’re ready to become either a reposado tequila or añejo tequila . The tequilas are bottled at 40 percent alcohol by volume .
Angostura Bitters To Seal The Deal
The tequila sour works without bitters. But for the very best tequila sour, we recommend adding a few drops of bitters! Angostura bitters are popularly used in cocktails to add a complex and bitter undertone. They take a drink from one-note to extraordinarily complex with just a few drops! In this drink, we added the bitters to the cocktail itself: youll see some egg white cocktails also place the bitters drops on top of the foam.
Angostura bitters are one of the most popular in drinks and easy to find. They get the name from their manufacturer: the House of Angostura in Trinidad and Tobago. Other cocktails that use Angostura bitters? The Old Fashioned, Toronto, Manhattan, Trinidad Sour and Champagne Cocktail.

How To Make A Tequila Pitcher Cocktail
A tequila sunrise is the perfect drink for unwinding in front of your favorite TV program or make a few for a casual evening in your backyard with a couple friends.
But for that long holiday weekend fiesta youre throwing, you can triple or quadruple this tequila cocktail recipe to have it ready to go in a pitcher. Preparing by the pitcher is so much easier than making drinks one-by-one when youre making drinks for a crowd. People can serve themselves from the pitcher and you can relax. Pure bliss!
My one piece of advice for turning this tequila sunrise into a pitcher cocktail is to leave the ice out of the pitcher, otherwise your cocktails will get watery. Instead, store the pitcher in a cooler and have ice on the side so the drinks still stay cold.

You can consider all of those five types of tequila to fall under the umbrella of one of these two categories:
- 100% Agave tequila which means that the tequila is produced with ONLY the sugars of the blue agave plant.
- Mixto tequila in which the tequila is made with no less than 51% agave, and then sweetened with other sweeteners.
Inside those two overhead categories, youll find the five following types of tequila. These are organized by age and expense, with the youngest listed first.

Tequila Sunrise Drink Origin
This drink has a colorful appearance and story behind it. It was created by bartenders Bobby Lozoff and Billy Rice in the 1970s at the Trident bar in Sausalito, California. The drink gained major attention and popularity in 1973 after Jose Cuervo put the recipe on the back of its tequila bottles, the Eagles song Tequila Sunrise was released, and The Rolling Stones ordered it across the country during their tour that same year. It was, indeed, the rock and roll party drink! These events made the cocktail go mainstream and cemented its International Bartender Associations inclusion.
The original Tequila Sunrise was served in the 1930s, which consisted of crème de cassis , lime juice, and soda water. It was sparkling and light, with a dark purplish hue nothing like the popular version today that includes orange juice and grenadine. I guess it didnt have any rock and roll bands to help promote it. HA!

Tequila Is A Winter Drink Prove Me Wrong
Contrary to what your fruity summertime margaritas would have you believe, winter flavors make a far better dance partner with tequila than rum
Do you miss tequila as much as I do?
Actually, theres been a bottle of the stuff in my home bar for the last eight months. So more precisely, do you miss the tequila experience?
Tequila meant poolside margaritas and debates about salt versus Tajín on the rim. Tequila meant pouring rounds of shots for friends who insist they cant handle it but laugh and drink anyway. Tequila meant being at a bar downtown and acting with a kind of recklessness I cant afford right now. More than any other spirit, just uttering the word tequila inspires a certain reaction.
Being stuck at home with a bottle of tequila its not the same, is it?
Guess we just gotta make do, but luckily, I do think winter is a perfect time to experiment with this agave-based spirit. Tequilas been growing in popularity over the last few years, but despite broad appeal, certain mythologies hold true in our minds: Tequila just doesnt sell quite the same during the colder months. Maybe people dont think the wintry aesthetic is right for a spirit that makes them think of Cinco de Mayo parties.

If You Have Tequila You Can Definitely Make One Of These 3
We already know tequila is delicious on its own. When you’re using a quality 100% agave spirit, cocktails don’t need much to complement the herbal, sweet, and spicy flavors. So keep your tequila cocktails simple.
We’ve rounded up some three-ingredient drinks that cover all the bases, from and agave-enhanced classics to nostalgic throwbacks like the Tequila Sunrise.
Tequila Vs Patrn Tequila
Patrón Tequila is a well-known name as well, and many tequila drinkers compare it to 1800 tequila. The two brands produce the same core range of tequilas , though subtle differences exist.
Among those is where the agave plants are grown. Patrón is made in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico, and the agave from that area tends to produce a brighter, greener tasting tequila. 1800 Tequila is a lowlands tequila, and these agave lean toward a fruitier, earthier profile. Also, some of the agave used in Patrón is pressed with a tahona wheel. This traditional method not only adds a certain flavor nuance to the finished tequila but is also reflected in the price. And that is 1800 Tequila’s biggest advantage it is cheaper than Patrón.
Which is the better tequila? That is a matter of personal taste, and a side-by-side comparison is highly recommended. Patrón is classified in the premium category, and it’s sometimes viewed as overpriced compared to other tequilas in that range. Some drinkers think that 1800 is just a little bit better.

How To Make A Batanga
The name of tequila and Coke is Batanga. Its a Mexican cocktail that was said to be created in 1961. You can read more about the history of the origin on Savuer.
To a cocktail glass, add ice cubes. Top with reposado tequila. This jigger-sized small measuring cup is my favorite for making cocktails fast!
Fill the glass with a few ounces of Coke and a 1/2 oz. of lime juice. Gently stir.
Give it a taste and see if you need to adjust anything. If you love lime, you may want to add more.
How Do You Make This Halloween Cocktail
I used PAMA liqueur which happens to be a favorite in my house especially with the wife. Its a pomegranate flavored liqueur that you can use to make lots of drinks, but normally in our house its pomegranate martinis.
Pama liquor is a lot better than using pomegranate juice because for one its not as sweet as the juice. Another reason is that its adding more booze to the drink instead of just plain juice.
To make this this Halloween tequila cocktail, I combined tequila with the PAMA liqueur and topped it off with seltzer. Almost like a version of the classic tequila sunrise cocktail. But this one is Halloween ready.
And I think in true Halloween form, this tequila cocktail is more like a sunset.
Most importantly, its a really good drink, even if you think you dont like tequila I know youre going to like this tequila combination.
Please do add the blood dripping down the sides of this drink and these vampire fang ice cubes are crazy cool. No vampire ice cube molds? How can that be? Throw in some of those plastic fangs from the dollar store that you chilled in the freezer.
Yep, Ive got you covered here. Youll be the coolest house on the street at Halloween. As far as the adults are concerned anyway.
You can make this Vampire Tequila cocktail ahead of time and keep it in a pitcher, then just top with seltzer!
