Is Gin Bad For Your Liver

How to make the best Gin and Tonic

Sage Rosemary & Thyme Gin And Tonic

50ml gin30ml herb-infused honey or simple syrup 2 sprigs of thyme and/or rosemary2 sage leaves1 lemon

Gently simmer the honey with the thyme, rosemary and sage for roughly 5 minutes. You can also use just one or two of the herbs instead of all three, if you prefer. Once the honey or simple syrup is cool, add it to a glass filled with ice along with the gin, tonic, and a squeeze of lemon, then stir for at least 30 seconds. Add a twist of lemon peel and/or a little sprig of any of the herbs, to garnish.

Can I Make Tonic Water At Home

Many types of soda are fun to make at home. However, tonic water is one that should always be purchased from a reputable manufacturer. Due to the serious side effects of cinchonism, it can be harmful to make your own tonic syrup from cinchona bark because it is impossible to control the amount of quinine. It is generally safe to purchase a premade tonic syrup if you follow the company’s recommended dilution to make tonic water. As an alternative, you can make quinine-free tonic syrup at home.

Of All The Gins That I Have Tried Here Are My Favorites In Order:

  • Malfy Con Limone Gin admittedly this one is very new to me but it QUICKLY jumped to the top of my list. It seems to be widely available and just has SUCH a smooth taste. They also make it without the lemon flavor but just trust me and get it with lemon!
  • Wild Roots Gin this is a local to Oregon gin and not all that widely available. BUT if you are able to get your hands on it, Im OBSESSED with the grapefruit flavored gin of theirs!
  • Viva City Native Gin this is another local gin because Im a sucker for a good local distillery.
  • Bombay Sapphire when all else fails, I go for Bombay. Its widely available and most bars serve it. Its a good classic gin to have on hand.
  • Hendricks another classic and easy to find gin. Im also a big sucker for the Hendricks packaging 🙂
  • Empress Gin Ive bought this a few times and always really enjoy it. PLUS it has a beautiful and fun light purple color that I find particularly nice when entertaining.
  • PLEASE let me know if you have a favorite. Were always looking for new kinds to try.

How Strong Is A Gin And Tonic

Mix it up: What makes a good gin and tonic?

The gin and tonic can be as light or as strong as you want to make it. The strength is controlled by the amount of tonic you pour. With the average 5-ounce pour of tonic and an 80-proof gin, the drink weighs in around 10 percent ABV . It’s a very casual drink, which is why it’s a favorite to serve at dinner.

The Gin and Tonic is a quintessential summer cocktail. At its simplest, this classic drink requires just two components. But choose high quality ingredients and finish with some thoughtful garnishing and you can make this simple gin cocktail truly extraordinary. Often regarded as just a warm weather drink, with a few tweaks, this refreshing G& T transitions easily to fall and winter happy hours.

Adapting The Gin & Tonic Formula

While this provides a good general guide, with such a versatile spirit one size does not fit all. While you could apply the measurements and method of the above calculation each time you mix up your favourite drink, you have to consider the variation of flavours of each gin.

But really, there are no limits or wrong answers when it comes to gin adventures. There are so many amazing gins out there, the best thing to do is experiment with different garnishes, tonics and even glasses to find your perfect match and the good news is, youll have plenty of fun doing it.

Glassware And Garnish: Give Up The Lime

You’re not legally required to include you a lime in your G& T. In fact, maybe skip it.

In Spain, the gin tonica is served in a giant goblet, trussed with pretty garnishes. Most of the bartenders I spoke with praised the goblet for its ability to hold loads of ice . But a few mentioned that the goblet can feel precariously top heavy, and if keeping your bubbles is the primary concern, they said, a tall, thin Collins or highball glass is better. Its the same idea as a flute for Champagne, notes San Francisco bartender Meryll Cawn. It keeps it carbonated. Also, you dont have an avalanche of ice cubes coming at your face.

    Lemon? Sure. Grapefruit? Highly recommended.

The one garnish Cawn avoids might be the one you see most often: I dont like lime in G& T because its rarely used as a botanical in gin, or in tonic. When you add it, she says, the lime takes over almost the entire flavor of the drink. Ditching the lime may sound like the hardest of all these rules to follow I promise, though, your new signature G& T will go down easy.

What Does A Gin And Tonic Taste Like

A classic gin and tonic is bright and zesty. Juniper, coriander and citrus all jump out of the glass to meet your senses. These vibrant aromas are balanced out by the light, bittersweet flavor of the tonic water. Add a slice of lime and you have the quintessential cocktail.

Gin & Tonic: The Best Variations On The Classic Cocktail

Mix up the classic gin and tonic with St. Germainâs ...

The gin and tonic is one of the worlds great cocktails. Its flavorful, crisp, refreshing, and, best of all, its delightfully simple: It contains little more than the ingredients that compose its name, served over ice and garnished with a lime wedge.

Of course, that doesnt mean the gin and tonic shouldnt be experimented with. According to Elie Hannouche, the Dubai-based gin connoisseur behind the popular gin-centric Instagram account , the gin and tonic actually begs for modification and transformation.

The G& T, to start with, is quite easy: one part gin and two parts tonic for a strong drink or three parts tonic I dont believe in the 1:4 ratio, Hannouche tells Mens Journal. Having said this, the vast profiles of gins and tonics make it fun to switch things up.

Gin has five main categories, Hannouche says. Theres classic London Dry gin, Old Tom , Navy strength , aged , and new age . Sampling the varieties, as well as mixing and matching them, is where things get fun.

I always say theres a gin and a tonic for everyone.

The gin and tonic can be tweaked and transformed any number of ways while still maintaining the complexity and bubbly crispness of the original drink. Hannouche, who has been drinking and experimenting with the cocktail since the vodka-cranberry died, has a few of favorite variations on the drink. He decided to share them with uswith the caveat that the author owes him a drink on his next visit to Dubai.

Why I Love This Fantastic Cocktail

  • The insanely short ingredient list. I have never had the luxury of extra space and storage in any of the homes I have lived in, so knowing that I can easily store a bottle of gin away for weekends is pretty awesome.
  • However, my main love comes from the absence of added sugar. Yes, there is sugar in all gin and tonics thanks to the tonic water BUT it is pretty minimal- at least when compared to the oh so popular simple syrup. Now that I am old and I require daily naps, I simply cant party like I used to. In other words, more than one super sugary drink knocks me outfor the week.
  • Finally, the gin and tonic really are so dang easy to make. And easy-to-make alcohol containing beverages that basically make themselves are kinda my favorite.
  • If you try making your own gin & tonic, please leave me a comment and let me know! I always love to hear your thoughts.

Most People Have Never Tasted A Proper Gin And Tonic

I would argue that most people have never tasted a proper Gin and Tonic. The fault is not their own. Many places will mix a G& T by using some cheap gin in a highball glass, add a few ice cubes, add a lemon wedge and top up with tonic from a dispenser gun. The result would look something like the below picture.

Dont get me wrong. This is just fine if you like the bitter taste of tonic diluted by water and a hint of gin mixed with lemon juice.

    The Gin Joint Charleston

This 1920s-era craft cocktail haunt in the Holy City spotlights seasonal flavors and its namesake spirit. Despite Georgias association with peaches, South Carolina produces almost twice as much of the stone fruit annually. So as peach season approaches, I wanted to create an incredibly refreshing sipper that lets them shine, says Christian Favier, bar manager of The Gin Joint. While the P& T is very simple, the star is fresh, local peachesflash frozen and shaved over the top . The result is essentially the best shaved ice youve ever tasted, followed by a deliciously refreshing Gin & Tonic.

    Peach & Tonic

    • 0.5 oz. peach liqueur
    • 0.25 oz. clarified lime acid or fresh lime juice
    • 3 oz. tonic
    • Grated frozen peach

In a Collins glass, combine gin, peach liqueur and lime acid or juice add ice . Top with tonic water. Take a whole frozen peach and shave a generous amount over the top of the glass with a microplane or zester.

    Ratio Of Gin To Tonic

GIN TONIC DRINK RECIPE – HOW TO MIX

My preferred ratio is 1:3, or 2 ounces of gin to 5-6 ounces of tonic water. Brands like Fever-Tree typically come in 6 oz bottles and I find this to be the perfect amount. Some prefer a bit less tonic water with a ratio of 1:2. This makes for a stronger cocktail and its a bit less balanced in my opinion.

Spanish Gin And Tonic Cocktail Recipe

    Inspired by Barcelona, Spain

It’s been a few years now that my friends who live in Barcelona have been all about Gin and Tonics.

They talked about how the bars there serve all sorts of gin with any number of tonics, and, frankly, it just sounded like a well-made drink to me. But when I went to Spain a few weeks ago to film Off-Menu, I totally got it. Night after night, I headed to different bars, and they all had versions of this Spanish-style G+T.

Variations Of The Gin And Tonic

Sure, each was as different as snowflakes, but they were all had a few things in common: served in big red wine glasses, piled high with ice, and just one shot of gin with loads and loads of tonic . The result is a Gin + Tonic that’s so much lighter than any you’ve had before, but it still allows the gin to shine totally.

    Gin And Tonic Twist

On my trip, I enlisted Lucy Garcia to show me some G+T spots, and my favorite was at Xixbar in Barcelona, where they took Bloom Gin and combined it with slices of mandarin and a high-quality light tonic. This gin and tonic recipe is an ode to that drink and will more than hold me over until I can make it back to Barça.

Why Is Gin So Popular Now

Come the millennium, a whole new style of G& T hailing from Spain helped the drink reach a new generation of drinkers. The Spanish gin tonica is said to have originated in culinary capital, San Sebastian, where the local array of Michelin-starred chefs developed a penchant for mixing their after-work gin with lots of ice and tonic, in large-bowled, long-stemmed glasses, garnished with an array of botanicals.

This method, designed to show off the inherent flavours in the gin to their best advantage, quickly spread across Spain and beyond, and today the distinctive balloon-shaped copa glass is the most popular choice among gin aficionados everywhere.

And there a lot of those aficionados these days in 2018, Brits purchased over 66 million bottles of gin.

In a separate glass or cocktail shaker, muddle the remaining blackberries with the lime juice, then add more ice, the simple syrup and gin. Shake or stir using a long spoon until the ingredients are well combined and the colour and juices of the blackberries have infused the mixture.

Strain the liquid into your drinking glass to get rid of the pips. Now add tonic and stir gently. Garnish with a few blackberries on a cocktail pick or a twist of lime peel.

    How To Drink Tonic Water

Tonic water is most often used in alcoholic mixed drinks, but it’s also enjoyable on its own when poured over ice. As a nonalcoholic drink, a splash of lime juice gives it a nice boost with the tart citrus balancing the tonic’s bitterness. Tonic’s dry profile makes it an excellent dinner drink and a palate cleanser you can sip between bites or courses.

While it’s famously mixed with gin, other liquors work well with tonic water. Vodka is nearly as popular, and Irish whiskey is a favorite among whiskey styles. Tonic can also be mixed with fortified wines and, for drinkers who really enjoy a bitter drink, with bitter spirits such as Aperol and Campari for the ultimate apéritif. In mixed drinks, tonic often appears in simple recipes with just a few ingredients. It pairs very well with citrus juices and berries and is an excellent alternative to sweeter sodas in some cocktail recipes.

Nonalcoholic tonic drinks are increasingly more popular. In coffee shops, floating a shot of espresso on top of a glass of tonic is common. It can also be mixed with cold brew coffee for a refreshing afternoon pick-me-up. For a sweet, floral touch, mix tonic water with an herb-infused syrup such as lavender.
