Tips For Making The Best Margaritas With Mix

  • Your limes will provide more juice if theyre at room temperature. If you keep them in the fridge, take them out and zap them in the microwave for 10-15 seconds to get the juices flowing.
  • Does your margarita mix taste a bit tart? Add a little more of the simple syrup to sweeten it up. Keep in mind that the Cointreau/triple sec you add to the recipe to make a margarita from mix will add a little sweetness, too, so dont be too heavy-handed.
  • If youre serving a crowd, consider doubling the recipe so youve got more than enough! Also, it keeps in the fridge, so any leftovers wouldnt go bad.

What Type Of Tequila Should I Use

I touched on it above, but I recommend using whatever premium, top shelf tequila you can afford in this recipe.

Some Cadillac Margarita recipes use aged tequila, such as reposado or Añejo. These tequilas have more depth of flavor, as theyre aged for a period of time in wooden casks, much like bourbon, whiskey and wine.

However, I prefer the brightness of a blanco tequila overall when paired with the vanilla and oak notes from the Grand Marnier, so thats what I use in this Cadillac margarita recipe. If you want to mix in your favorite reposado or Añejo tequila, have at it! Just be sure that whatever you use is labeled 100% blue agave.

If youre looking for brands in particular that I enjoy, here are a few:

  • Herradura Silverthis is our house tequila and weve used it with all our margaritas recently because its smooth, not too expensive and tasty!
  • Espolòn Tequila Blancomuch like the Herradura Silver, this is a smooth, tasty tequila thats definitely on the more affordable end of the spectrum
  • Casa Dragones Blancowe fell in love with this brand when we visited San Miguel de Allende last year. This brand and product is a total splurge, and while I used it to take these photos, its certainly not a requirement for a good top shelf margarita.

What Is In Margarita Mix

Homemade margarita mix has three simple ingredientstwo if youre using store-bought simple syrup.

Heres what you need to make it totally from scratch:

  • Water
  • Granulated sugar
  • Limesa lot of em because were squeezing enough to have 1 ½ cups.

Every lime, obviously, is different, but on average, youll get about 2 tablespoons of juice out of a single lime. For a cup and a half of juice, you might need close to 12 limes.

Where Was The Margarita Invented

There are a number of stories about where the margarita was created. It’s difficult to say which is true. In the book “Imbibe!,” David Wondrich traces its roots to around the repeal of Prohibition. “Margarita” is the Spanish word for “daisy” and this drink belongs to the daisy family of cocktails.

Drinks like the brandy daisy were very popular in the late 1800s and made with any base spirit, including brandy, gin, rum, and whiskey. They follow a formula of spirit, sweetener, orange liqueur, lemon juice, and soda. When tequila started to reach American bars, the tequila daisymade with tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, and sometimes sodaappeared. It wasn’t long before it became known as the margarita.

    First and foremost, juice your limes. I typically do this over a liquid measuring cup* with a fine mesh strainer on top of it to keep pulp and seeds out of the final juice.

    Pro tip: Youll get more juice from your limes if theyre room temperature. If you keep em in the fridge, pop them into the microwave for 20-30 seconds to get those juices flowing!

    Also, youll want to rim your margarita glass with salt if youre into that at this point. You can also add ice to the glass, as well, if you want your margarita on the rocks to be extra cold.

    Once your limes are juiced and other ingredients are acquired, fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Measure in the tequila, simple syrup and lime juice.

    Give it a good shake until the metal of the cocktail shaker is extremely cold, then strain and pour into your prepared margarita glasses.

    Pour the Grand Marnier over the top of the margaritas. Either let it float on top, creating a beautiful ombre effect, or stir it in.

    Garnish with a lime, and enjoy immediately.

    Margaritas are a brilliant drink to make for any type of get-together, whether its a Mexican Dinner Party, Cinco de Mayo or just a random Tuesday when you want to have friends over for happy hour.

    One of the best things about them is you can make them in batches, too, to make your life easier.

    Here are a few thoughts on making margaritas with mix for entertaining:

    • Juice your limes in advance. Alternately, consider purchasing the cold press lime juice from the refrigerated section of your grocery store. Yes, its more expensive than juicing your own, but its significantly faster unless you have an electric juicer.
    • Make the simple syrup in advance, too. This stuff keeps in the fridge for weeks, so you dont have to make it the day youre making your homemade margarita mix.
    • Double the homemade margarita mixrecipe if youre serving a crowd.
    • Let guests mix their own margaritasor make a pitcher to make pouring even easier!

    Orange liqueur

    There are a few things that can affect the taste of a margarita, like ingredients you use and method of preparation. Much like with everything you make, ingredients are very important. So if you opt for a lower grade of tequila and orange liqueur, it will taste accordingly. Try to get top shelf tequila and orange liqueur for the best tasting cocktail.;

    I prefer to use silver tequila in a margarita because it is mixed with several other ingredients. Gold tequila is typically better for straight taking shots because of the smooth taste. But if you like the taste of gold tequila, feel free to use it instead.;

    When it comes to orange liqueur, I prefer to use Grand Marnier. There are three most known orange liqueurs ; Triple Sec, Cointreau, and Grand Marnier. Personally, I prefer to use Grand Marnier because it has the strongest, full bodied orange flavor. Out of hundreds of margaritas Ive made at the bar, majority of my guests preferred margaritas made with Grand Marnier.

    1. Blue Agave Is Key

    A spirit can only be classified as tequila if it is a minimum of 51 percent derived from the blue agave plant, with the remainder consisting of another kind of neutral spirit. Any of your quality brands of tequila typically use 100 percent blue agave in spirits, and any of these brands will flaunt it on their label. A mixto, a term we went over early, is a lower percentage of agave and generally cheaper.

    2. Appearance can be deceiving agave isnt a cactus

    Despite blue agaves appearance thats prickly and pokey in nature, it is technically not a cactus. It is actually part of the Agavoideae family, making it a succulent more closely related to a lily plant. Fun Fact agave means noble, admirable, and illustrious in Latin.

    3. The Blue Agave harvest takes time, love, and care;;

    The blue agave plants, known as agave tequilana weber to the scientific community, take a whopping eight to twelve years to grow to maturity for harvest and be up to seven feet tall. Thats comparable to the time, love, and care to raise a small child that goes into producing your favorite bottle of tequila.

    4. Tequila comes from the heart of agave

    5. Appellation of origin;

    6. In Mexico, they typically sip, not shoot tequila;

    In the United States, it is common practice to drink tequila as a shot with a salted rim and a lime wedge chaser, known in Mexico as tequila cruda. Whereas in Mexico, they typically choose to savor their tequila and sip it neat like a fine whiskey.;
