Cruzan Rum prides itself on a few things and being clean is one of them. Cruzan rum is column-distilled five times before fermenting, resulting in what it likes to call the worlds cleanest rum. Column distillation, remember, is what they do for vodka repeat stripping away of impurities like fusel oils, theoretically leaving a cleaner distillate that either ages up to four years and goes into a bottle of their flagship Aged Light Rum or gets some complexity from aging.
Old Cruzan Rum Is Relatively Young
When you think of the Caribbean climate, you might think of falling asleep in that ironic mesh tank top. The second thing youll remember is the heat and humidity, higher here than, say, Scotland, which is why aged rum suffers a much higher loss of product to evaporation . It clocks in at about 6 to 12 percent in the Caribbean compared to Scotchs measly but still-tragic 2 percent. Cruzan aged rum tops out at 12 years of aging, largely because aging rum much longer becomes a dangerous dance with evaporation and profit margins.

Cruzan Strawberry has nothing to do with aged rums. It is just a sugar overload liquor masked as a Caribbean rum to tourists. The strawberry flavor is artificial and overpowering sugar is just simply very offputting. My suggestion is to skip the entire Cruzan lineup altogether.

Cruzan Rum Distillery Resumes Production Following Hurricane Maria
St. Croix, USVI, October 16, 2017 The Cruzan Rum distillery has resumed rum production following a temporary shutdown due to the impact of Hurricane Maria. Located on St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Cruzan distillery produces some of the worlds finest aged rums and is also a popular destination for visitors to the island.While the distillery suspended operations for approximately three weeks due to storm damage, Cruzan completed critical repairs and does not expect any supply disruptions in the marketplace. Even though some of the companys warehouses sustained damage, Cruzans aging rum supply was not impacted. Previous investments to establish the distillerys own power generation facility to strengthen business resilience also enabled the timely resumption of rum production.

It’s sweet, yes. The alcohol taste nearly disappears when mixed with OJ. But it’s good and it gets you drunk and it’s smooth and sweet enough to drink from the bottle, or over ice with no mixer. However I am someone who actually enjoys the burn of hard liquor
They Have A Unique Take On Single Barrel
Cruzans Single Barrel Estate Diamond aged light rum is a sort of single barrel spirit. The reason were saying sort of is because the rum that ends up in a Cruzan Single Barrel bottle is a blend of aged rums thats then put into a freshly charred new oak barrel for more aging . The rum from that barrel is what goes into the bottle.

I prefer Cruzan rums in general. I got this Cruzan Mango rum not being sure what to do with it. It’s not bad by itself or on the rocks. One summer day I decided to try it in a store brand lemon lime soda over ice. It was light and refreshing! It tastes more like apricots to me. I’ve had people who don’t like mango tell me they liked it with the lemon lime soda. It’s now my go to summer drink.

This one has a unique nose and a delightful spice to it. sweet smooth and soft on its own due to 35% ABV it really lets the spice combo shine if you drink it neat. where this rum shines is with coke. good value for the money. my go too rum when i want a rum and coke. sweet and slight vanilla with some pepper and spice. might go well with dr pepper.

Cruzan Rum Entwined With Islands History Culture
Most think of the great American spirit as bourbon whiskey. But in the U.S. Virgin Islands, its rum.
Two major rum producers, Cruzan and Captain Morgan, call the island of St. Croix home. But Cruzan is entwined with the culture of the island, with a history stretching back 250 years. The name, Cruzan, means of St. Croix. Captain Morgan relocated several years ago from Puerto Rico, lured by billions of government incentive dollars. The close-knit St. Croix community, with deep relationships strengthened by enduring adversity, view the Captain as a carpetbagger.
The Cruzan facility sits on the same sugar plantation where it began. While the founding family remains involved, the distillery is owned by Beam Suntory, the Japanese-owned, Chicago-based booze conglomerate of which Jim Beam is just one component.
The historic Cruzan plantation house provides offices, and a historic cane mill sits at the entrance surrounded by the flags of the nations that have flown over the island.
On a recent distillery tour, visitors got to taste raw molasses, the feedstock of rum, running off tanker trucks. In an open-air fermentation house, massive open tanks of molasses bubble, creating a molasses/alcohol liquid that heads to distillation, after which it is blended to proof and aged in used Jim Beam barrels. The finished product heads to Kentucky to be bottled or flavored, which makes sense given the cost of shipping to and from St. Croix.
Things You Should Know About Cruzan Rum
Even though its a fairly simple concept the distillate of sugarcane, barreled and aged, then bottled according to various regional preferences and regulations many Americans are confused by rum. This is thanks to labeling restrictions that are much looser in the U.S., where sugar cane spirits from Brazilian cachaca to spicy-sweet Captain Morgan are both considered rum.
One rum that would rightfully fight for its authenticity is Cruzan, a 240-year-old rum from a tiny island in the Caribbean. Its history spans the worlds of colonialism, Hurricane Maria, absurdly strong family ties, and some spicy competition with the aforementioned Captain.

Mango and Rum are two infinitely creative combinations. Flavourful and sweet without being overpowering or syrup-like in texture. Goes well with soda, in daiquiris, mojitos, or more complex cocktails, and adds flair to a Blue Hawaiian or Hurricane. About as good as it gets as a flavoured white rum for it’s price point.

N- Heat with rough oak aroma, some boiled cherry, sweaty and turn wet earth. Not with notable character that fall under the “generic but fine” type, no excessive sugar or additive, rather clean with some tea, some natural candy and whiff of chocolate.
P- American oak shows in the form of plum, soft spices and drift of peach and assam-poi.
F- Short-medium, though spiky but still smooth as it acclaimed on their slogan in the official site.

Cruzan Proves That Alcohol Can Sometimes Keep Families Together
The Nelthropp family, which came to St. Croix in the late 18th century and has remained for eight generations, has officially overseen Cruzan Rum since the 1950s. Gary Nelthropp is the current president and master distiller, having taken over from his father in 1991. Karen, Garys sister, runs guest services at the distillery and their brother Donnie is master blender. All of which means a family can actually go to the Caribbean, encounter rum, and still talk to each other.

The Distillery Is As Old As Roller Skating

I’ve been experimenting with white/light/silver rums lately because I wanted to narrow down a list of go-tos for stocking the bar with good, everyday mixers. Cruzan’s Light Rum always seems to be in constant rotational sales with other popular and mass produced selections, so I gave it a go. Most recently, I’ve been mixing with light rums from Don Q, Bacardi and Capt. Morgan. All of those offer their own very distinctive personalities and I will get into those in their own reviews. The Cruzan Light rum offers the best balance out of the ones above. Its lively but not overpowering in cocktails. The nose is rich with vanilla, toasted almond and toasted coconut with a little earthy-nuttiness. The alcohol has a strong presence that isn’t overly astringent or detergent. In the mouth, my initial impression was of those candy isle marshmallows coated in toasted coconut. The body is light and crisp with a slight alcohol burn on the backend that fades relatively quick but left me mostly refreshed. To sum things up, the Cruzan makes lively cocktails and offers minimal astringency with toasty almond and coconut notes, mild sweetness and is still crisp but more mellow than it’s price category rivals.

I should’ve known better than to buy this and immediately try it neat, but I am not very smart. I could not down a sipping sized glass, so i made myself a mai thai and everything worked out fine. Not the worst thing I’ve had… but I have had very bad things.

In 2010, Cruzan debuted its Cruzan 9 spiced rum, made with a blend of nine spices: allspice, vanilla, pepper, ginger, mace, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, and juniper berry. Two years later, after a protracted and politically charged departure from Puerto Rico, multinational beverage company Diageo moved its Captain Morgan distillery to St. Croix, becoming a big, spicy competitor to the local Cruzan brand. Cola products are best consumed with either.

You Might Not Need A Mixer
Cruzan produces respectably sippable straightforward dark and light rums. In addition to the basics, the brand offers a rainbow of flavored rums that are lower in alcohol and relieve you of the obligation of buying a ton of mixers, if you have soda on hand. The flavors read temptingly like smoothie ingredients: Raspberry, Guava, Strawberry, and Banana.
Cruzan Rum A St Croix Tradition
Since the early 17th century, St. Croix has been making use of its natural resources locally as well as exporting them worldwide. A fine example of this is the refining of sugar cane to produce rum. At one time, over 150 plantations were producing molasses and rum at their factories. Today, the tradition of making rum on St. Croix is carried on by the Nelthropp family. Their brand, Cruzan Rum, has been voted one of the best in the world. With visiting friends, I had the opportunity to play tourist and tour the rum distillery to discover what goes into making a world-class rum.
Entering the distillery, we observed remnants of the original plantation, Estate Diamond. An old sugar mill now serves as a cistern for the distillery. An imposing, large green building, once the estates great house, now serves as the distillerys main office. A 19th century chimney is now enclosed and houses the boilers. Like the times, things must change. Additional office space had to be added to the grounds to accommodate their employees, but other than that, the past of this plantation has been well preserved by the use of the existing buildings.
