Bulleits distillery and visitor centre are located in Shelbyville, Kentucky, US. It is situated at 3464 Benson Pike, 48km from downtown Louisville and Lexington.
Located on a 121ha campus, Bulleits distillery is capable of producing 750,000 9l cases a year. It features four barrel houses with a capacity of 55,000 barrels each and a 52ft still.
It includes a tank farm, a storage system, five storage warehouses and an administration building. The warehouses are planned to be expanded to include up to 15 buildings.
The facility is equipped with the latest technology to conserve and reuse resources, reducing its overall environmental impact. It features Shelby Countys first industrial solar array capable of running all on-site mobile equipment and a bio-pond to act as a natural filtration system for rainwater.
The distillery produces Bulleit Bourbon along with several Diageo bourbon and North American Whiskey brands.

As bourbon and other American whiskeys have boomed in popularity over the last few years, many companies have expanded operations or opened new facilities to accommodate growing demand. How To Drink Bulleit Bourbon
Theres no doubt about it: sipping bourbon neat is the best way to enjoy this spirit. Of course, no one will tell you off or turn their nose up if you serve Bulleit mixed into a cocktail but to really understand the spirit youll want to try it by itself first.
Start with a Glencairn glass and pour a measure in before breathing in the aroma of the spirit. While you could just use a shot glass, the shape of a Glencairn glass means youll experience more of the aromas as they funnel upwards. If you dont have a Glencairn glass, try an Old Fashioned or a rocks glass with a tapered shape.
If you find Bulleit too strong to enjoy by itself, try adding a few drops of water. This will release more of the flavours of the bourbon and will take the heat off. And if the taste is still too strong, serving whiskey on the rocks is another great option.
Chilling the spirit will let the sweetness shine through without altering the drinking experience. Bourbon is supposed to be savoured rather than chugged back, so sipping only a tiny bit at once is your best bet for ultimate enjoyment.

Bulleit Rye 12-Year-Old Straight American Whiskey
Rye whiskey is quintessentially Americas historic whiskey. During the first half of the 19th century rye was the principal cereal grain grown in the United States. The lack of cold hardy corn varieties meant that, unlike today, corn did not flourish north of the Mason-Dixon line. Rye was hardier and grew faster.
Rye was produced in two principal styles. In Pennsylvania, mainly in the northern and western part of the state, the mash bill consisted of 90% to 100% rye. This produced a whiskey that was full bodied and spicy, termed Monongahela rye.
In Maryland, on the other hand, where it was warmer and corn could be grown, it was generally mashed 65% rye and 35% corn. This produced a sweeter, smoother rye than Monongahela. Maryland style rye was also widely produced in the Midwest.
As corn production increased, partly as a result of the development of more cold tolerant varieties, and rye production decreased, Midwest distillers increased their use of cheaper corn over rye, eventually settling on a bourbon style mash bill.
The rye whiskey industry never recovered from Prohibition. The absence of aged inventories put them at a disadvantage against foreign producers, while a government policy of encouraging corn production further hampered rye growers. Bourbon was easier to distill than the notoriously fickle rye and cheaper to produce.

If Bulleits Recipe Had Stayed The Same Since 1830
it would now be classed as a rye whiskey rather than a bourbon. Still, Thomas adaptations to the recipe make Bulleit bourbon a high rye content whiskey with a 28% rye mash bill and a hairs-on-your-chest 45% ABV.
Along with its high rye content, Bulleit got other factors that give it such a distinctive taste. This bourbon is created with a unique yeast strain that gives it extra flavour as well as Kentucky limestone-filtered water. As is customary for bourbon, its all produced in Shelby County, Kentucky.
Perfectionists might wonder why Bulleits label is consistently uneven but theres a story behind that, too. Back in Augustus days, labels were supposed to be slightly off-centre and its a tradition that Thomas decided to keep. History Of The Bulleits
The concept behind this interesting mash bill and aging is credited to Thomas E. Bulleit, better known as Tom Bulleit, and his daughter Hollis. Although, his idea of getting people high on rye is nowhere original. The romance with rye started in his family almost two centuries ago, when French-immigrant to the new America, Augustus Bulleit, Toms great-great grandfather concocted a whiskey with two-thirds of rye and one-third corn. Those were the days when the Bourbon law that decrees the concoction to have 51% corn hadnt come about. So, Augustus sold his Bulleit Bourbon with more-rye-than-corn to its drinkers in New Orleans. Legend has it that during one of his trading trips to the city by boat, he mysteriously disappeared and never resurfaced. With his ominous end in 1860, his whiskey brand was discontinued.
Over a hundred years later, Tom revived Augustus high-rye whiskey recipe. His story began in 1987, when after quitting his high-paying law practice, Tom decided to pursue his passion for whiskey trading. After struggling for ten years, he partnered with Diageo PLC that provided his brand with marketing and distribution support.

BACKGROUND: Bullets story dates back to the late 80s when Tom Bulleit took his familys recipe and made his own version. This single barrel expression was modeled after the classic high rye mashbill, aged for 8-12 years, and bottled at 104 proof after being non-chill filtered.
NOSE: The nose opens up with a sweet butterscotch scent that mixes with baking spice and charred oak. As you continue to waft in the flavors light notes of orange, citrus, vanilla, and maple brown sugar start to come and go.
PALATE: A very oily mouthfeel flows around your mouth with ease leaving notes of honey, banana, and vanilla. As you continue to drink notes of baked rye bread, cracked pepper, caramel start to take over accompanied by floral noted that all turn to a peppery rye spice.
FINISH: A long spiced finish that is all so common in rye whiskeys, medium-long in length with a slight undertone of butterscotch.
VALUE: I paid $70 for this bottle, and although I enjoyed the pour, I think this should be priced in the $50 or less range like the barrel strength expression.

Widow Janes VP of operations Michele Clark says she got that story from a local whose father was involved in owning the Century House and helped begin it.
And despite Clark claiming they have a tap into the Widow Jane Mine to extract water, Lowengard disputed that as well: The source of their water, Turco Brothers’ mine, is still not connected to the water of the Widow Jane Mine, and we have no connection to Widow Jane Whiskey. A representative of Turcos Brothers water also confirmed Lowengards statement, saying Turcos doesnt have access to the Widow Jane mine itself.
Clark disputed that characterization, saying that the company instead has access to a “closed portion” of the mine, rather than what she says is the open area of the mine under the purview of the historical society. She also said Widow Jane has a supportive relationship with the organization, an assertion that Lowengard said is not the case.
The properties are close in proximity, however, so its safe to assume Widow Jane is sourcing limestone-rich mineral water from Rosendale, just not from the namesake mine as advertised.
As for producing the well-known 10-year-old straight bourbon, its understandable why Widow Jane sources that opened in 2012, the distillery isnt old enough to produce a 10-year varietal.
He added that, on the other hand, those looking for local products might be put off by deceptive marketing.
