Review: Crystal Head Vodka
Not familiar with Crystal Head, which has been a boozing sensation for weeks now?
Watch this then continue reading the review.
So there you go. This is vodka placed in a bottle that is shaped in the form of one of the infamous crystal skulls, which have become far better known now that they made an Indiana Jones movie about them.
Dan Aykroyd sells his spirit far better than I could, so Ill leave it to him for the fine details. The digested selling points: Made in Newfoundland, Canada from local water quadruple-distilled triple filtered through diamonds and bottled in an insane decanter in the shape of a skull.
A gimmick? Absolutely, but what a gimmick! What other spirit can make shout-outs to UFOs, ectoplasm, and other planes of existence and still leave you legitimately interested in what theyre selling?
So lets move on to the vodka itself. Crystal Head is familiar-tasting, 80 proof, and hardly earth-shattering in its composition, but overall very good. Theres an immediate vanilla punch that reminded me of the recently-reviewed 2 Rooz vodka. A bit chalky on the palate, it goes down extremely smoothly, with some sweetness and candy-like flavors on the tongue that immediately make one think of both dessert and ghosts. The finish is clean and crisp. Theres no medicinal flavor here at all. Really impressive.
What Makes Crystal Head So Special
Aside from the skull-shaped bottle, Crystal Head vodka is special thanks to two things: filtration and flavour.
The vodka is most notable for its puritya result of being distilled four times and filtered seven times. It also contains no artificial additives, no glycerol, oils or sugars. Nothing extra is added. What you see is what you get: a vodka that is distinctly clean and very refreshing.
The purity of the crystal head means that it tastes quite neutralmaking it a great base for cocktails. If sampling neat, it has a sharp taste with some vanilla-like tones and a slight pepperinessall of which add to its drinkability.
Other Vodkas And Their Filtration Process
- Grey Goose
Grey Goose is a popular spirit. Its made from rye grain mash and is distilled 4 times. Unlike other vodkas, this product doesnt undergo any filtration process. The spirit carries a rich caramel taste arising from the rawness of the ingredients. The average price for a 750ml-size Grey Goose is $35.99.
- Square One Organics
If using Herkimer Diamonds is already shocking, then the filtration process of Square One Organics could be another surprise. This vodka uses pure glacial waters from Iceland and uses lava rocks for filtration. The lava rocks capture impurities and leave only the best drop of the spirit. The average price for a 750ml-size Square One Organics is $33.99.

Crystal Head: The Story Behind The Brand
Crystal Head vodka is the rather quirky brainchild of Hollywood actor Dan Aykroyd, of Ghostbusters and Blues Brothers fame, and world-famous fine artist John Alexander. It was established with the express aim of creating the purest vodka possible.
But they didnt stop there. A vodka of this quality needed a vessel that was equally astounding. Made in the Bruni Glass factory in Milan, these bottles take inspiration from ancient legend and lore. Because who doesnt like their drinks full of mythos and mystery?

What Makes It Special
Crystal Head Vodka is a vodka to the stars. A-listers like Johnny Depp and Keith Richards are genuine fans of this product, and this vodka was the official vodka of the Rolling Stones Anniversary Tour in 2013.
The brand conflicted with Stephen Spielbergs movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull during its first release. Fearing some form of copyright, Dan Aykroyd contacted the director, and to his surprise, Spielberg happily suggested that they serve Crystal Head Vodka at the premiere. It became a hit.

Crystal Head Aurora & Aurora Borealis
The Crystal Head Aurora variant is inspired by one of the most beautiful phenomena in the world, the Aurora Borealis . It is a display of brilliant colors that appear in patterns, stars, or waves and is seen in high latitude regions. These bright lights are energy collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun entering the earths atmosphere.
The Crystal Head Aurora uses English wheat and is distilled five times, compared to Crystal Head Vodka. It has a bolder flavor and is a little bit grassier compared to the original variant. On top of that, the skull bottles glow iridescently just like the aurora borealis.
The Crystal Head Aurora Vodka bottle starts at $60, a bit pricier than the regular Crystal Head Vodka.
Crystal Head Aurora Martini
If youre one of the many who prefer their martinis with vodka rather than gin, heres another classic. This martini takes advantage of the distinct flavour-profile of Crystal Head Aurora, whose spicy and lavender-like taste adds boldness to the dry bitterness of a martini. Just dont get too carried away with this particular cocktail. Martinis are notoriously strong.
- 1 tablespoon Dolin Extra dry or another dry vermouth
- Lemon peel or olive to garnish
Cocktail recipes: Add all the ingredients to a glass and stir until cold. Strain into a frozen martini glass. Garnish with lemon peel or an olive. If you like your martinis dirty, add the olive juice or brine. If you prefer something sweeter, try making it with sweet vermouth instead.

How To Drink Crystal Head Vodka
The best way to drink Crystal Head vodka is as a shot.Pick up a bottle online, leave to chill in the freezer, and, when youre ready, pour a shot glass and knock it back.
Or sip it. Youre the boss. Just know that it was designed to be enjoyed neat. Because a drink this pure and clean is best sampled straight.
That said, vodka, by definition, is meant to be flavourless, and so you may want to add a little mixer. Mixing vodka with soda is a classicjust add some lime for additional flavour. Tonic water is another option and orange juice is also popular.
Why A Skull For Bottling
John Alexander is the architect of Crystal Heads skull trademark. It was made from Milan glass and was manufactured by Bruni Glass Manufacturing. With such complexity for a vodka bottle, where did Alexander get the idea? According to Crystal Head, the inspiration of the design came from The Thirteen Crystal Skulls, a known legend from the Native American tribes such as Mayans and Aztecs.
The bottle is generally distinguished as a skull. Metalheads and Goths would probably love such a concept. However, Alexander interprets it differently. He prefers to , rather than a skull, because thats how he visualized the vessel when he was designing it.
In the said American legend, the crystal skulls symbolize enlightenment and positive energy. Matching its symbolism, Alexander and Aykroyd select such design as the perfect vessel to carry the pure and clean Canadian spirit.

Why Is Crystal Head Vodka So Expensive
With a price range of $50-$70, Crystal Head vodka price rests on the upper range. But, why is it so expensive? Its probably because of these 3 reasons:
- Its a Pure Spirit
Crystal Head Vodka prides itself to be a clean and pure spirit with no additive added. Still, it has achieved a formidable taste that caught spirit drinkers attention. Not to mention the spirit was distilled 4 times and filtrated 3 times through Herkimer Diamonds. Honestly, Herkimer diamonds arent real diamonds, but quartz. Nevertheless, these are rare and mostly found in Herkimer County mines in New York.
- The craftsmanship of Crystal Head bottles
The bottle design and manufacturing took 2 years to accomplish. The astounding craftsmanship is enough to explain Crystal Heads price point. Aside from the clear glass, they also introduced the famed Aurora bottles. To produce Aurora bottles, crystal clear vessels were electrically charged with powdered metals. Using this process, no two bottles are produced alike.
- The Target Market
It might be a coincidence that the development of Crystal Head Vodka happened simultaneously with the launching of the movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Head. Before the launch, Aykroyd met with the film director, Stephen Spielberg. They came up with the idea of serving Crystal Head Vodka during Indiana Joness premiere.
Also, with such luxurious processes, Crystal Head isnt your regular booze and it appears to target the middle to upper market.
Ology: How We Select Test And Rank The Best Vodkas
Vodka has kept its title as one of the most popular spirits in the world for many years, which means there are hundreds of different brands to choose from. However, while there are more brands to sample than we could ever reasonably sip, there are a handful that are known for being consistently excellent.
When we put together this guide of the best vodka brands, we looked at all of the new vodka brands that have joined the market in recent years as well as those that have kept their title of success for a longer period of time. We looked at the process used for distilling the spirit, the number of times each bottle was distilled as well as any unique factors included during this process.
We took into account the quality of the grain, potato or other base product used by each brand as well as its sustainability and whether or not the alcohol was produced locally. Then, we factored in the price of each bottle, its purpose and versatility, and its range of flavours and aromas.
