How To Make Strawberry Mojito

About The Agave In This Mojito Recipe

Easy strawberry mojito recipe| No alcohol| Recipes from a small kitchen

A conventional mojito uses simple syrup for sweetness, but this strawberry mojito recipe uses agave nectar instead. I love the way that agave nectar and strawberries play together.

If added sugars are not your thing, you can reduce or omit the agave nectar in this recipe.

In fact, if you have some luscious, ripe, thick-of-summer strawberries, I encourage you to taste your strawberry mojito before you add ice, then sweeten to taste, if needed.

Don’t sweeten after you add ice, though. The ice cubes will cause the agave nectar will thicken up and not dissolve. Stir it in thoroughly before adding the ice!

How To Hull A Strawberry

This recipe does use a little bit of agave to bring out the strawberries’ natural sweetness. You can help that along a bit more by hulling the strawberries before you chop them for your strawberry mojito.

The hull is a white piece in the center of each strawberry that tastes…kind of blah.

To hull the berry, insert your knife into the top at an angle, and work it around in a circle. Then, gently grab the leaves at the top and tug. The conical white hull should pop right out!

Use light rum in this easy mojito recipe . Since rum is the only alcohol in the drink, you want to be sure to use a rum that you love. However, this is also not the time to reach for your most expensive bottle of rum, since its flavor will become diluted.

Here are some of the rums for a Mojito, that come in at under $30 a bottle:

  • Bacardi Silver
  • Mount Gay Eclipse Silver Rum
  • Cruzan Aged White Rum

How To Make A Big Batch

Unfortunately, I havent found a good way to make mojitos in a pitcher. The flavors just dont come out as well. And I always end up putting more mint and lime juice in each glass which kind of defeats the purpose of making it in a pitcher.

So to make a big batch of mojitos, I get out a bunch of glasses and pre-make the initial part of the drink.

In each glass:

  • Muddle the mint, lime juice, strawberries and sugar
  • Add the rum. If youre going to be making some with alcohol and some without, you can do this at serving time.

I do this about an hour before people are arriving and then put all the glasses out on the bar.

When its time to serve, all you have to do is fill the glass up with ice and pour in the club soda. Or you can make it a self-serve bar and have everyone make their own.

What Are Some Tips For Making The Perfect Mojito

When making any type of mojito, be sure to use fresh mint leaves for the best flavor. Also, be sure to muddle the mint leaves well in order to release their oils and flavor. And, be sure to use fresh lime juice for the best taste.

Finally, when adding rum to the drink, be sure to taste as you go in order to achieve the perfect balance of sweetness, acidity, and boozy flavor. Grab your strawberry mojito ingredients and enjoy the best strawberry mojito recipe!

How Do You Muddle A Mojito Without A Muddler

A muddler is a valuable tool for cocktails and an inexpensive investment if you like mojitos, old-fashioneds, and other muddled cocktails. If you don’t have one, look around your kitchen for a blunt, long-handled object. A wooden spoon is one of the best options, and a standard spoon or fork will work in a pinch. Other options include a pestle, tamper, meat tenderizer, or French-style rolling pin. You may need to press the fruit and herbs into the side of the glass, rather than the bottom. If muddling in a tall glass is a challenge, do it in a small bowl, then transfer the mix to the glass.

How To Make The Strawberry Mojito

My favorite part about mojitos is the ease to make them. A few important notes to remember:

  • The classic Mojito is stirred not shaken. So, grab your bar spoon and forget about your cocktail shaker for this recipe.
  • I reccomend using real sugar over simple syrup, this mixed drink is all about the muddling and shaking which is what makes it such a labor of love. Muddling the real sugar is the best way to craft this classic cocktail
  • Opt to use white rum over dark rum. Although, there are many Caribbean cocktails that use dark rum as a base, the Mojito is not one of them. Enjoy the lightness of white rum in the delicious recipe.

Time to grab your muddler and your preferred cocktail glass (I like to use a collins glass because its tall and slender which makes it easy to muddle all the ingredients and stir it up with a bar spoon.

Once you have your materials, youre ready to create your cocktail! Youll start by adding the sliced strawberries, white sugar, mint leaves, and lime juice to a glass and gently muddle these ingredients together. I like to give these ingredients a few minutes after Ive finished muddling to really infuse together.

Nest, add white rum to the glass and stir with a straw or bar spoon. Fill the glass with ice and top with some carbonated club soda. To finish this signature cocktail, garnish with a lime wheel and mint sprig if desired!

Soda Water Vs Club Soda

How to Make a Strawberry Mojito ð?

Speaking of soda wateris it club soda? Is it seltzer? Well, we use the term to encompass both. In this strawberry mojito recipe, you can use either club soda or seltzer: really any type of unflavored sparkling water! Here are some of the differences between club soda vs seltzer vs tonic water:

  • Soda water aka seltzer is carbonated water with no additives straight up bubbles!
  • Club soda is carbonated water infused with added minerals, which give it a salty, lightly sweet flavor. Its great in cocktails .
  • Tonic water is carbonated water with added quinine and sugar. Dont use it in a Mojito because of the distinct flavor. But you can use it for a Gin and Tonic, Vodka Tonic, Tequila Tonic or Whiskey Tonic!

What Goes In A Strawberry Mojito

Strawberry Mojitos only require 6 ingredients , a highball glass, a cocktail spoon, and a muddler. For the cocktail youll need:

  • Lime wedges. Smaller wedges are best here. I typically cut half of a lime into 4 wedges for this recipe.
  • Fresh mint leaves. I love to use the abundant spearmint from the market or my garden. Mojito mint is also wonderful, but it can be a bit harder to find for planting.
  • Superfine sugar. Has smaller crystals than granulated sugar and dissolves more quickly in cocktails. Youll find superfine sugar in the baking section of the grocery store. If your grocery store doesnt stock it, you can make your own superfine sugar using granulated sugar and a food processor.
  • Fresh strawberries. Tops removed and berries sliced.
  • White Rum. Heading to the liquor store? Check out The Best White Rums for Cocktails from Decanter.
  • Club Soda. Carbonated water with added minerals, such as Fever Tree or Q Mixers.
  • Crushed or Cubed Ice. Use a high-speed blender or a Lewis bag and mallet to crush ice cubes for cocktails. If youre making mojitos for guests and need a larger quantity, you can also buy bags of crushed ice at many Sonic locations and some convenience stores.

You Can Replace The Sugar And Use A Mojito Simple Syrup:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 10 mint leaves
  • 1 lime, cut into wedges

Mix the water and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil until the sugar has completely dissolved and the syrup has thickened, about 5 minutes. Strain the simple syrup through a sieve to remove the mint leaves and lime wedges. Let the syrup cool to room temperature. This can be store for about a month in the fridge.

Then muddle the lime juice, 1 tbsp simple syrup, 3 mint leaves and rum. *muddle to release oils and flavor

Which Rum To Use For A Mojito

I use Bacardi, but any white rum will do. White rum is clear, like vodka, and has a subtle, sweet flavor. It appears in a lot of classic rum cocktails, like the pina colada, the daiquiri, and of course, the mojito. Since youre mixing rum with other ingredients, an ultra-premium rum isnt necessary.

So Here Are The Details

Mojitos are simple, even when strawberries are added. Make the lime sugar first, its literally just sugar and lime zest. So simple, but the sugared rim adds a sweet, sparkly touch to your glasses.

Next, make the mojito! Muddled limes with fresh strawberries and lots of mint. Shake everything up with some white rum and strain it into your glass.

I always add crushed ice and additional mint. Then top off each mojito with ginger beer for a spicy, ginger kick.

The Right Tools To Make A Mojito

I recommend the following tools if you’re going to make a mojito. You can do without them, of course, but they’ll make the job a lot easier.

First, a muddler. Muddlers, which can be made from wood, metal, or rubber, look like tiny meat tenderizers on a stick. When you use a muddler to smash or pulverize fruits and herbs, it brings out their flavor and aroma.

You can use the back of a spoon to do the job, but when it comes to cocktails like mojitos, mint juleps, or a whiskey smash, a muddler really is best.

Second, a citrus juicer. I juice a lot of citrus when making cocktails, and I absolutely swear by a handheld citrus juicer like this one. There are other ways to juice limes, including with your hands, but I find this to be the quickest and most efficient.

Lastly, a canvas ice bag. The most important part of a mojito is not the rum, or the lime, or even the mint. It’s the ice. Without crushed ice, a mojito isn’t a mojito. The problem is that unless you can afford a $400 countertop pebble ice maker, or your refrigerator helpfully generates it for you, making crushed ice is kind of a pain.

The best way Ive found to do this is with a canvas ice bag. You place the ice in it, and then beat the tar out of it with a rolling pin. Voilacrushed ice!
