â?° 5 Spiced Rum Reviews in 5 Minutes: Kraken, Private Stock, Sailor Jerry, Oakheart, Don Q

A new entry into the spiced rum market, Don Q Oak Barrel Spiced rum is distilled, aged, and bottled at the Serralles distillery located in Ponce, Puerto Rico. The rum is aged for three years in American oak bourbon barrels and then blended with spices and bottled at 45 abv.

Appearance

The 750 ml short necked bottle has two small labels detailing the basic facts about the rum leaving plenty of room for the bronze liquid to shine through.

The bottle is secured with a wooden stopper that holds an iconic Don Quixote coin on the top and what feels like a natural cork for the bottle.

Nose

The rum delivers a vanilla and cinnamon forward aroma with nutmeg, dried fruit, and other spices nipping around the edges.

Palate

Sipping the rum provides a swirl of strong vanilla, followed by cinnamon, nutmeg, toasted almonds, cloves, baking spices, and dried apricots. As the rum begins to fade there is a sweet caramel laden smoky oak note that drifts into a long tannin rich finish.

Review

When Roberto Serralles decided to make spiced rum a part of their permanent line up, he wanted to go a different direction from the entry levels rums common in the marketplace and elevate the spiced rum category, instead of giving their customers more of the same.

Review: Don Q Oak Barrel Spiced Rum

The latest product from Destilería Serrallés, the Puerto Rican producers of Don Q Rum, is a natural line extension: spiced rum.

The catch? Don Q Oak Barrel Spiced Rum is an aged, spiced rum. The spirit is made from a blend of Puerto Rican rums that have been aged for a minimum of three years and up to six years. The aged rum is them spiced with a blend of vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Its also bottled slightly overproof not at 70 proof like many mainstream spiced rums on the market.

The rum is immediately quite dry, even on the nose, which is laden with baking spices, particularly nutmeg, plus notes of toffee, gingerbread, and hints of black tea. Barrel influence is evident in the form of bold vanilla aromas as well. This leads to again a quite dry palate that has only a modest amount of sugar, those baking spices and the natural fruit character of the rum working to provide what sense of sweetness the rum has to offer. Lightly nutty and a little floral, the spice and fruit work side by side to give the rum a complexity not often seen in spiced rums. A little brown butter and some smoldering notes of cloves and barrel char on the back end serves to complete a surprisingly elegant and approachable package.

90 proof.

Of the rums I have tried this one may be the best. Smooth and flavorful with not to much spice or that nasty twisted face you make after a drink of some of the others. I would defiantly buy again and may try some f the other Don Q rums.

Don Q Oak Barrel Spiced Rum

Crafted in Puerto Rico, this rum is made via column still and finished with no additives or colorings, which is rare in the rum world. It starts with a base of three year aged rum, and then a blend of spices is added to the base to create radiant autumnal flavors. In comparison to other spiced rums on the market, this one leans less on cinnamon flavors and more on complex winter spices.

Don Q Oak Barrel Spiced Rum is one of my go-to rums to use in cocktails in the fall and winter, describes Marta De La Cruz Marrero, the food and beverage supervisor at Burlock Coast in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Its a spiced rum with warm flavors and golden hues. Its got this heavier texture thanks to the American white oak barrels aging that imparts crisp vanilla, cinnamon, caramel, and honey notes.

De La Cruz Marrero also says,It is excellent to add it to your coffee with these types of taste notes, especially with the vanilla and caramel. Not only is the taste great, but its also affordable.

Description

With a little guidance, its incredibly easy to find high-quality rums at affordable prices. These play well in traditional rum drinks, like piña coladas, mai tais, and daiquiris, but are also excellent when subbed in for whiskey in classic cocktails, such as rum old-fashioneds and rum and tonics. To help find the best bottles on a budget, we asked some of the countrys most knowledgeable bartenders to list their favorite wallet-friendly options.

Here are the best cheap rums.

This rum was specifically created for mixologists by famed bartender Jim Meehan of New York City’s Please Dont Tell. The name gives a nod to the rums origin: Its a special blend of five rums from five different Islands, including blackstrap molasses rum from Jamaica, Batavia Arak from Java, and rums from Guyana, Barbados, and Trinidad. While this technically is a white rum, it has incredible depth and adds layers of flavor to cocktails.

Bank’s Five Island is the easy go-to for my favorite cheap rum, says Gavin Humes, the food and beverage director of Scratch|Bar & Kitchen. With a little funk and a delicious spice and brown sugar quality, it’s fantastic in my favorite rum drinka daiquiri.

Introducing Don Q Oak Barrel Spiced Rum

Turns out, spiced rum doesnt have to be based in nautical lore, and its bottles arent legally obligated to come festooned with pirates and sea monsters. The proof: Don Q Oak Barrel Spiced Rum, the first spiced offering from the brand and one thats providing a grown-up alternative to the options currently dominating back bars and store shelves. Don Qs version clocks in at a hefty 90 proof and is comprised of rums aged from three to six years.

The spices include vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove, which add plenty of flavor and complement the barrel-aged rummy character. And best of all, they achieved it without the use of artificial flavors or colors, because who wants those?

Roberto Serrallés, Don Qs sixth-generation rum maker, had this to say: We took our time in crafting our Don Q Oak Barrel Spiced Rum. We wanted to make sure we created an elevated experience for our customers one that would reveal how barrel aging and pure ingredients can take spiced rum from an ordinary mixer to an exceptional spirit that is ideal for crafting unique cocktails as well as for drinking neat, on the rocks or with a splash.

Its no surprise that he likes it, but were excited to see a spiced rum thats using oak barrels to its benefit. That three to six year timeframe is longer than the category standard, which means more structure, and more actual aged rum flavor in addition to the added spices.

How To Make Crock Pot Wassail With Spiced Rum

Mix the above ingredients into a large 8-quart crock pot. While the juices warmed up, let’s discuss how to make this crock pot wassail even warmer.

Raise your hand if you love some spiced rum. Yes!! Me too. I love it just mixed in cola or ginger ale but man does it do magical things to the flavors of fall. When I got my hands on this beautiful bottle of Don Q Oak Barrel Spiced rum I was like a girl in the candy store.

Or rather one excited girl in the liquor store.

I really am a believer in letting good booze age. Good wine gets better with age, and boy does rum too! This rum has aged three years in oak barrels giving it a smooth yet smoky flavor mixed in with the spices.

With the pop of the cork lid, I knew Don Q and I was going to be fast friends. This rum is exceptional aged Puerto Rican rum. As I learned about Don Q rums I learned this is a craft rum aged to exceptional smoothness.

I couldn’t wait for the wassail to get done slowly warming up so I can have my first taste of this special spiced rum.

Once the warm vanilla crock pot wassail was hot, I served up mugs of wassail. Then added shots of the Don Q spiced rum to the mugs for the farmer and me while the kids enjoyed some plain warm vanilla wassail.

To take the spiked vanilla wassail up another notch, I drench the mugs in whipped cream and drizzled caramel ice cream topping over top of the whipped cream. The results of these flavor combinations were nothing short of spectacular.

Made with a three-year-old rum base, this rum has a sweet vanilla bean and baking spice scent. Hot cinnamon dominates the palate, underpinned by a core of vanilla and oak. Though it has plenty of character and bounce, it’s too hot to sip straight, so plan to mix into highballs and other rum cocktails. Kara Newman

Celebrate Fall With Don Q Oak Barrel Spiced Rum

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Don Q rum for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

Here in Colorado the days are getting shorter and the weather rapidly cooler, and with that I always like to focus on new and creative Fall cocktails to usher in my most favorite seasons. I am always on the hunt for substantive and dynamic Fall liquors and Don Q Oak Spiced rum fits the bill perfectly. Don Q is known for its exceptional Aged Puerto Rican Rums and Don Q Oak Spiced rum is an exceptional example of what a truly great barrel aged rum can be.

On its own Don Q Oak Spiced rum is fantastic for sipping as the sun slowly retreats behind the horizon. I prefer it poured over a single spherical ice cube, letting it cool and mellow a bit before fully enjoying what it has to offer. The first thing you notice with this spiced rum in the glass is the brilliant rich and golden hue it casts on the table due to the barrel aging process. At first the nose presents a robust vanilla front with cinnamon and hints of clove frolicking on the edge. The body is robust to say the least yet still silky smooth on the palate. The oaky tenderness warms the body as spice notes such as clove and cinnamon from the barrel aging process give this aged rum uncommon depth. Don Q Oak Spiced rum is simply fantastic on the rocks the depth and originality of this rum is extremely unique and the aging process results in an exceptional drinking liquor.

Best For Mojitos: Havana Club Aejo Blanco Puerto Rican Rum

Josue Gonzalez, the beverage director of Seven Reasons in Washington D.C. says the real Havana Club is his favorite budget rum. Im not talking about the one that is currently made in Cuba Im talking about the one Bacardi makes and distributes here in America.

Gonzalez dives into the colorful story of the bottle: Many moons ago the Echeveria family sold the original recipe to Bacardi when they fled Cuba due to the tyranny that was the Cuban government. Bacardi held the recipe in its vault for many years while the Cuban Government seized the Arechabala familys assets, including the Havana Club distillery in Cuba. They began producing a rum there and distributed all over the world as Havana Club. Since the Cuban Havana Club is not permitted in the U.S. due to the embargo with Cuba, Bacardi decided to revive the brand using the original recipe that was given to them by the family who founded it. I highly recommend this for any rum lover.

The light Cuban rum is made from several different aged rums, blended together and aged in the Caribbean for a year in oak. Try it in the quintessential Cuban cocktail: the mojito.

Getting To Know Don Q Oak Barrel Spiced Rum + Recipe

by Joe Miragliotta Oct 31, 2017

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Don Q rum. All opinions are 100% mine.

Im not sure what this says about me, but one of the things I love the most is to crack open a bottle of rum Ive yet to try. Theres a certain anticipation about what it will taste like and whether or not it will remind me of something Ive experienced before during my travels. Im sure Im not the only one who loves to reminisce over a glass with some good friends.

Over the next two months, Im happy to announce Im partnering with Don Q. Their heritage dates back to 1865 thats over 150 years and six generations of rum making in the Serrallés family. During this time they not only invested a significant amount of time mastering the art of rum making but also turning their distillery into one of the most environmentally responsible and greenest facilities in the spirits industry. While this in itself is a huge accomplishment, certainly worth a glass of Don Q on the rocks, I think what the big take away here is the fact that they are helping their beautiful island of Puerto Rico. Theyre one of the few distilleries in the world not dumping their wastewater in the ocean, which helps their people and wildlife thrive. Cheers to that!
