Blue Spot Single Pot Still Cask Strength

For any whiskey fan who has had the relative joy of visiting one of Irelands many whiskey bars over the past 5 years or so, Id be absolutely certain that if they asked for a recommendation at the bar they would be recommended one of two whiskeys, Redbreast or Green Spot. This fact brings forward the relativity of said joy, as the point where many of the so-called Whiskey Bars in Ireland fall down when compared with the great Whisky Bars of Scotland is the knowledge of the staff on the whiskeys themselves. The most recommended whiskey brands in Ireland are all under the Irish Distillers portfolio from the Midleton Distillery and it is these two that are leaned the heaviest on.

Why? Well first things first, they are Single Pot Still Irish Whiskeys. A unique style of whiskey to Ireland, made with a mix mash of malted and un-malted barley, and up to 5% other grains according to the Technical File. Its the style of whiskey which set Ireland apart in the 1800s when Irish Whiskey was the most popular in the world, and it is the style of whiskey which today fuels many conversations on the differences between Irish Whiskey and the other great whiskies of the world. The un-malted green barley adds significant texture to the distillate, best described as oily or creamy, and it aids the creation of the signature Pot Still spice that many fans of the category exclaim in their tasting notes without actually be able to describe what that actually tastes like.

Blue Spot 7 Year Old Cask Strength Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey

Continuing on from the trends set by Yellow Spot and Red Spot, this release uses component whiskeys matured in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks with the inclusion of a wine cask component, in this case Madeira casks. They state that the components ages range between 7-20 years, which is irrelevant given the age statement, it has been bottled at 58.7% cask strength which will vary from batch to batch, and has been bottled after non-chill filtration. It will retail in Ireland for 80, with most, if not all, of the initial allocation selling out on the opening days.

Colour: A pale Amber.

On the nose: I know I said it above but it is distinctly Pot Still. Touches of sherry throughout, hints of candied mango, orange zest and a whippet of lime peels. It becomes quite nutty, theres sweet marzipan but its dominant in roasted hazelnuts. As it develops it gets more intense with banana skins and butterscotch sweetness. Note the alcohol is present but pleasant.

In the mouth: Lovely oily, mouthcoating texture and a bursting of orchard fruits in the aromatics of the mouth. As it clings to the tongue it gives you a mixture of floral notes like the hull of red berries and fragrant violet petal. It lingers in the back palate with chocolate, caramel, an abundance of nuts and a hint of peppery spice.

A Look At Yellow Spot Whiskey

Yellow Spot, along with its younger brother Green Spot, have the enviable title of the last original bonded whiskies of Ireland. What is bonded whiskey I hear you ask? Great question. If you find yourself walking around Dublin, Cork or any one of our great cities you may see Bonder or Whiskey Bonder written over the doors to some older pubs. These are relics of simpler times for whiskey producers when the bonded market reigned supreme. Distillers would produce whiskey but leave the task of aging and bottling to the whiskey bonders. Essentially, anyone who wanted to produce their own style of whiskey could.

The onset of globalisation in the late 1960s saw everything change. The whiskey producers of Ireland scrapped the bonded whiskey market in search of a more consistent and recognisable product to flaunt around the world. Bonded whiskey virtually disappeared overnight in Ireland, except for Green Spot, bonded by the Mitchell & Sons wine merchants of Dublin as it has been for over 120 years. Sadly though, Yellow Spot didnt make the cut and disappeared for over 45 years until its rebirth in 2012.

Tasting Notes: Green Spot Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey

Vital Stats: 80 proof. Distilled from malted and unmalted barley. No age statement, crafted from a blend of seven to 10 year old whiskies. $40/700ml

Appearance: Green Spot pours somewhere between sunburnt straw and light amber, and possesses a regal clarity and brilliance in the glass. Its impressive legs are slow to droop and the body of the whiskey ripples like jelly when swirled fervently. This whiskey is inviting in its appearance but possesses a sly hint of warning within its caramel-colored depth.

Nose: The first inhale drags a bright cloud of tropical fruit over my palate, surprising as it is mouthwatering. Notes of golden raisin, guava, and papaya scream loudest, and palate acclamation brings subtler hints of cantaloupe, treacle, and dusty, spicy oak in to later breaths. There is a pronounced green apple tone that is more reminiscent of candy than actual fruit, and it lingers all throughout each breath in a very soft and balancing fashion.

The Takeaway

With the exception of some over-fruity phenolics in the aroma, which reveal themselves especially boldly towards the end of a glass, it’s very hard to find fault in this particular whiskey. It may not be the most mind-bending or exploratory in flavor, but it’s constructed with finesse, care, and respect for tradition. I’d be happy to sip on this whiskey any day of the week.

Nonetheless Green Spot and our Spot whiskeys have and always will remain the whiskeys that never give up, and so lets hope that one day they will all be reunited: Red, Blue, Green, Yellow and its modern ancestors such as Green Spot Château Léoville Barton. Whiskey Review: Green Spot Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey

Lets first discuss what makes Single Pot Still something special. For starters, its the only whiskey making process that is unique to Ireland. In contrast to single malt, single pot still indicates use of both malted and unmalted barley in the mash bill, which provides a unique spiciness indicative of this unusual style. This method was first attempted in the 1800s, not as a way to improve flavor, but as a way to cut costs. Luckily for 19th century whiskey distillers, the grain variance along with the use of traditional pot stills added complexity instead of an air of cheapness. Besides Green Spot, only a few other examples are readily available on American liquor store shelves today.

The Midleton Distillery makes this particular brand under the guidance of Mitchell & Sons, an Irish wine distributor which grew out of a small provisions market in Dublin. In the late 1800s, Mitchell & Sons would deliver their empty wine casks to the Jameson distillery to be filled, then returned to the Mitchells cellar, and eventually aged and sold through the small shop. Green Spot, named for a colored marking on the wooden barrel, indicated a 10-year aged product. Today, Green Spot bears no age statement, but is blended from whiskeys between seven and 10 years old aged in both used sherry and bourbon casks.
