How to make a MALIBU Rum Pina Colada

Caribbean Rum is one of the significant ingredients in Malibu Rum, which is a sort of alcoholic spirit distilled from the left-over residues of sugarcane, incorporating a taste of sweetness. Apart from that, some fruit spirits flavored Rum and Curacao, make it a complete Malibu Rum. Curacao is a type of liqueur produced by bitter orange peels. The Malibu Rum Alcohol Content by volume present is 21%.

Originally Malibu Alcohol is flavored with coconut. However, Malibu Rum is available with different versions, flavored with tropical fruits like mango, pineapple, melon, banana, etc. There are a few more, yet different versions available in the worldwide market today. Sweet Coconut Easy To Drink But No Real Rum Credentials4out Of 10

Mix with fresh pineapple juice and you get a tasty drink, use in any cocktail, you will get a tasty drink. Sweet, consumable, but has no real rum influence outside of a cocktail night. On the positive side, it is cheap and readily available and I do have a penchant for the premixed cans with sparkling pineapple juice.

I am sure there are better quality coconut rums out there, but this one will serve its purpose.

Its A Vacation In A Bottle Or Can

No shock, Malibu comes in cans. This was inevitable Malibu is already a flavored, lower-ABV alcoholic beverage, so it was destined to be packaged in portable, affordable aluminum. In February 2020, Malibu Splash, a sparkling ready-to-drink flavored malt beverage, slipped into the beer aisle in skinny 12-ounce cans of bubbly Strawberry, Lime, Passion Fruit and Pineapple flavors. Theyll be available in 4-packs and variety 8-packs nationwide.

More packaging formats include 750-milliliter and 1.75-liter pouches of Blue Hawaiian and Malibu Rum Punch, which are totally not meant to be consumed like Capri Sun. Unless, of course, youre attending the Malibu Games.

Winter Sunshine Rum Cocktail

Most Malibu cocktails are all about summer and the beach, but this icy mixed drink is geared more towards the winter months.

Honestly, it still screams summer to me, thanks to the overwhelmingly sweet flavor and aroma of coconut, but it looks like a glass of winter snow, making it ideal for the holidays.

How Is Rum Made

The current legal definition in the United States is as follows:

Rum is an alcoholic distillate from the fermented juice of sugar cane, sugar cane syrup, sugar cane molasses, or other sugar cane by-products, produced at less than 190 proof in such manner that the distillate possesses the taste, aroma, and characteristics generally attributed to rum, and bottled at not less than 80 proof and also includes mixtures solely of such distillates.

Rum is made much like other spirits. The most important step, though, is harvesting the sugar properly. Williams suggests, To get the best results, the cane should be cut close to the ground It must then be milled very quickly after harvesting, while the sugar content is high. And then it must be boiled, rendered down quickly once the juice, the vesous, is squeezed out, because otherwise it will rapidly ferment.

Although there is no world standard for the distillation process, pot stills are the preferred method for rums with fuller taste.

Is All Rum Vegan

Although almost every brand of Rum will be vegan, there are exceptions.

Some will contain honey but if it is clear, and there is no sign of the word honey in the name or on the label, then it is highly likely to be vegan.

Honey is problematic because it exploits bees for the production of their food. When humans remove it, bees are at risk of starvation.

This goes against every cruelty-free rule that vegans stand for, so any rum made with honey should be avoided.

One example of a brand that uses honey is Cayo Grande Club Ronmiel, a Spanish brand.

Malibu Has A Little Bit Of English In It

When you think of Malibu, you probably dont think of the Royal Crown. But it was an Englishman indeed who developed Malibu: Thomas Jago, liquor industry legend who passed away in 2018, was a liquor executive who created both Baileys Irish Cream and Malibu, the latter of which was a tremendous effort in rebranding a failing rum called Coco Rico. Jago also went on to develop Johnnie Walker Blue.

Rum Made From Sugar Cane Juice

Rhum Clément

Not all rum production depends on molasses. Indeed, former French colonies are celebrated for their rhum agricole, which uses the sugar cane juice instead.

As France has produced its own sugar from sugar beets since 1811, the French Caribbean market crashed and its sugar refineries quickly fell into debt. Therefore, they quickly adapted by fermenting the primary ingredient rather than the byproduct.

As we explain in our guide to the different types of rum, rhum agricole features a distinctively herbaceous flavour profile and lighter body thanks to its use of sugar cane juice.

Initially, French rhum was regarded as inferior compared to its British and Spanish peers as it had previously been banned to protect the French brandy market.

However, after a phylloxera outbreak devasted French vines in the mid-19th century, rum production significantly improved as its demand boomed.

Finally, some craft rums may be made from turbinado sugar. Similarly, an ingredient best avoided is dehydrated sugar cane juice, which is sometimes used to make cheap rum.

Its Not Actually A Rum Although Rum Is Its Base Spirit But Does It Matter

Liquor.com / Laura Sant

Malibu rum isnt actually a rum, although rum is its base spirit. But when youre sipping a Malibu & Coke by the pool, does it really matter?

Pros:

  • A terrific mixer, fitting in well in a host of summertime cocktails, most notably a Piña Colada
  • Its a sweet and low-proof entry point for rookie drinkers who havent had a lot of experience with full-proof liquor. The low proof also means it works well for day-drinking.

Cons:

  • Malibu is a liqueur thats perceived by many to be a rum, which distorts the perception of the entire rum industry and can frustrate distillers who have to explain why their product doesnt taste like Malibu.

Modern Methods Of Making Rum

Batch Process: The Traditional Pot Still

Many artisanal rums are produced by small companies in small quantities. Many producers believe that pot stills allow them to produce the most desirable spirit.

a traditional copper pot still with two retorts

The traditional pot still is a centuries-old method of distilling fermented product in relatively small batches.

The fine art of the distiller is the key to success for the traditional pot still method. The disadvantage is that each distinct batch may vary to some degree and high volume production is not always feasible.

The use of pot stills is not uncommon in some territories that retain traditional methods of production, such as Jamaica, Barbados, Guyana and St. Lucia.

Craft distillers typically choose pot stills and hybrid batch stills to give them more control over the process of making artisanal rum. The lesser efficiency and smaller quantities of rum produced often lead to higher production costs compared to the more efficient factory column stills.

The separation of heads, heart and tails in a batch still is a function of time. The first, lightest vapors to condense are heads . Subsequently, the heart of the rum batch is collected for storage before the final stage is discarded for other uses.

a Continuous Column Still produces rum by separating the lighter alcohol compounds from the heavier non-volatile compounds in the fermented wash.

Not A Serious Rum Really4out Of 10

Postedover 6 years agobyNicholas MillerfromUnited Stateswith75 ratings

There are much better coconut rums out there. First thing its like 42 proof so its almost all water and sugar so I cant consider it a true rum, more like a liqueur. With that in mind you cant expect much as far as quality. Opening it you get a sugary coconut smell with no hints of alcohol. Drinking it is much the same you get a very distinct extract of coconut taste with a side of a large portion of sugar cane and thats about it. I prefer other coconut rums that dont use coconut extract because its just not anywhere near comparable to a natural coconut flavor. Which is why this rum loses points because it is beat out by a large amount of competitors. Notes -Not a liquor more a liqueur -Smells of coconut and sugar -Tastes like coconut EXTRACT and sugar cane-There are better rums for the price that use a natural coconut and at higher proof-Very fact manufactured taste
