What Kind Of Coconut Milk To Use
For the coconut milk, you want to use the kind in the can. It has a creamy thickness to it that coconut milk in a carton just cant match. Its also super easy to find, so you dont have to go searching everywhere for cream of coconut.
If youre wondering about substitutions, you can make the drink with a few other options but a can of coconut milk is best. If youre near a Trader Joes, we like their organic coconut cream in a can.
You can use coconut milk in the carton, if you need to. It doesnt have the creaminess of the canned version, though so it will alter the taste. If you do make this substitution, also add 1 tablespoon of heavy cream to give it that richness.
If you like your Pina Colada to be a bit chunky, you can use fresh pineapple instead of juice. Itll be a smoother blend with juice.

A Rum Runner Heavy On The Oj
If you enjoy orange juice cocktails, this is a great rum runner recipe. It requires fewer ingredients, so it’s super easy to make. Tools To Make A Pina Colada
There really arent a lot of tool necessary. One thing you absolutely need is a good blender with the ability to really chop the ice. This will lead to the smoothest frozen pina colada.
I recommend the Ninja countertop blender. Its a 1000-watt blender that can destroy ice with its 6 blades. Its a professional grade blender for just around $80. Such a good investment, especially if you make a lot of frozen cocktails and smoothies.
I also think you need hurricane glasses to serve your Pina Coladas in. This will elevate the cocktail experience to a truly authentic level. I can imagine it now. Feels like summer. If youre not using a hurricane glass, use a tall glass thats at least 12 oz .
Thats all you need to make the perfect Pina Colada. Just blend up all the ingredients, poor it into your hurricane glass, top it with a tropical umbrella and youre good to go.

A Classically Styled Rum Runner
Dale DeGroff’s “The Craft of the Cocktail” is a book filled with amazing recipes like this rum runner. It’s entirely different than all others, and that’s what makes it great.
This drink has a lighter profile because it skips the heaviness of orange juice and opts for refreshing pineapple instead. It also features two rums and introduces the rich texture of an egg white. All of these elements give DeGroff’s rum runner a classic style that’s lost in most modern renditions of the cocktail.
To make this drink, muddle a piece of lime in the bottom of a cocktail shaker until lightly bruised. Add 1 ounce each of light and medium rums, pineapple juice, and simple syrup, as well as 1/2 ounce of lime juice and an egg white. Shake vigorously and strain into a tall glass with ice. Garnish with tropical fruit.
Pia Colada Jello Shots
Jello shots are a fun variation on cocktails, and coconut rum makes fantastic jell-shots because it blends so well with the various flavors of gelatin. Blending it with pineapple gelatin and pineapple juice makes a tasty Piña Colada flavored version. This makes 12 shots.
- 1 box pineapple flavored gelatin
- 1 cup coconut rum

You can serve it in pretty much any type of glass but the standard one that is most commonly used is a Hurricane Glass such as the one below. You can also use a stemless wine glass if you cant find hurricane glasses anywhere although they are pretty common so it shouldnt be much of an issue to find some.

What Drinks Are Good Mixers For Rum
Rum is one of those drinks that never goes out of fashion. Its something you can drink all year round, but perhaps its at its best during a heat wave through the summer months. Mix it with light ingredients and youve got a wonderfully smooth, refreshing drink.

The 26 Best Rum Cocktails That Are Fun And Taste Fantastic
Distilled from fermented sugarcane juice or sugarcane molasses, rum is a spirit with a long history and almost limitless variation. The number of different options can make rum confusing for beginners, but this shouldnt stop you from experimenting with rum yourself. In this post, were highlighting the best rum cocktails, as these are the perfect place to get you started on your journey.
First though, lets talk about rum itself. There are various grades of rum, including light rums, golden rums, and dark rums.
Dark rums are aged in barrels, which produces a darker color and richer flavor. On the other hand, light rum goes through multiple filters and isnt aged much at all. As a result, light rum tends to have a milder flavor and fewer distinctive flavor notes.
Gold rum tends to fall somewhere in the middle. Some gold rum may use additives to create the right color, but this isnt always the case. Finally, youll find spiced rum from time-to-time. Spiced rum tends to have extra coloring and spices added in. Captain Morgan is a classic example.
Because of the distinctive flavor differences, many cocktail recipes will specify which type of rum you should be using. Some others may work well with any type of rum, although youll need to experiment to find the flavor balance that suits you the best.

What Is A Rum Runner
With the start of prohibition in 1920 begins the story of the Rum Runners. One of the most famous, Captain William McCoy began bringing rum from Bimini and the rest of the Bahamas into south Florida.
Similar to Bootlegging Rum Running was the smuggling of alcohol into places where it was outlawed. by water in particular. Often the larger vessels would transfer the cargo to smaller skiffs just outside of the US territorial waters where it would then be rowed ashore under cover of darkness.
To maximize profits the rums were often mixed with water, cheaper brands, moonshines, and flavored liquids, then rebranded and sold as high end libations.
Legend says that the Rum Runner cocktail was created in the 1950s at the Holiday Isle Tiki Bar in Islamorada, Florida, but its basis lies in the mixed rums of the prohibition.
