Why Youll Love This Easy Mojito Recipe
Typically made with just white rum, fresh mint , lime, sugar, and club soda, the classic mint mojito is a simple cocktail that even novice bartenders can easily make at home.
My recipe is *slightly* different than some, as it calls for both regular granulated sugar and powdered sugar. Why? Many cocktail purists will claim that muddling the fresh mint and lime with sugar is an essential part of building mojito flavor. Others argue that simple syrup is the only way to ensure that the cocktail isnt overrun with undissolved sugar crystals.
My solution? Using regular sugar to muddle accomplishes what the purists want, and using powdered sugar means the sweetness easily dissolves into the cold liquid all without having to dirty a pot to make simple syrup. I call that a win-win!

How To Make A Mojito From Scratch
Forget Everything You Know
It’s hot. You’re thirsty. And you want a refreshing, summery cocktail that’s as easy to make as it is easy to down. Enter the mojito: that classic rum-based drink that’s perfect for summertime. Jim Meehan says the oldest recipe comes from a 1929 cocktail book called Libro de Cocktail, but since then, of course, we’ve seen variations galore. Jose Enrique makes a pineapple mojito, while Jean-Georges uses kumquats.
Though recipes vary, most call for muddling mint. According to Nomad Bar Director Pietro Collina, however, you actually shouldn’t muddle those leaves. Muddling will create a bitter taste, he says. All you have to do is remove the leaves from the stem, and throw them into the shaker with the rest of the ingredients. The mint flavor will still be pronounced, but you’ll avoid any bitter flavor or discoloration from pounding the leaves.
Another pro tip? When you’re garnishing a cocktailmojito or otherwisewith a sprig of mint, don’t simply plop it in the glass, Collina says. Instead, twist it in your hand, then stick the sprig in, let go and watch the leaves unfurl. The garnish will look fresh and alive this waya brighter garnish to match that brighter-tasting, muddle-free mojito. And without the muddling, you’re cocktail will be ready to drink that much faster.

My Mojito Mishap Know Thy Mint
August 9, 2018 By Heather Blackmore
A few weeks ago, I learned how NOT to make a mojito. When Im prepping for a crowd, I like to mix the drink several hours before go time. It gives the ingredients plenty of time to mingle and get acquainted. With just five simple ingredients mint, lime, rum, sugar and club soda its not rocket science. Ive made pitchers and single servings, both with wonderfully refreshing results, until my friend hosted a BBQ. They had never had my favorite summertime drink so I decided to prepare a pitcher the night before and delight their taste buds. The mojito experience I gave them however, was akin to a dental cleaning. All it lacked was a polishing sponge and the mosquito-like whir of handheld power tools. I ruined their first mojito experience simply by using the wrong mint.
Menthol is responsible for the cool sensation you get when you brush your teeth or chew a piece of mint gum. Despite the sensation, there is no real temperature change in your mouth. Its all in the way your sensory receptors interpret it. My concoction amounted to an icy glass of mouthwash served with a wedge of lime. Ugh. Had I tasted it before serving, I could have saved us all. In retrospect, watching their faces as they choked down that first sip was pretty funny. Live and learn.
