Seacrets Distilling: A Prohibition Era Tourist Stop In Ocean City With A 21st Century Business Purpose
Among acres of palm trees, tropical drinks, and reggae music at Seacrets in Ocean City, owner and founder Leighton Moore wants patrons to feel like theyve been transported to Jamaica.
Now, Moore has built another such immersive illusion for Baltimoreans and others heading to the ocean: the Seacrets Distilling Company.
The distillery sends visitors back to a very specific moment in time: December 5, 1933, with Prohibition set to end at midnight. The premise holds throughout the facility as visitors learn how Seacrets crafts liquor from grain to bottle, ending with a secret speakeasy and a complimentary tipple.
But the business located on the same property as the Seacrets bar is more than a tourist attraction. Seacrets Distilling is a vendor in several mid-Atlantic states and to some military bases. And Moore also supplies thousands of bottles to his own bars at Seacrets which, really, was kind of the point all along.
Moore took on the onerous task of distilling his own liquor because he wanted to cut costs for his bar and bypass hand-tying government rules.
It used to be that the Liquor Control Board was a mandatory middleman in Worcester County. The agency would buy spirits from distributors, re-sell at a premium back to the public, and send the difference for county coffers. It was a de facto tax on alcohol and a pebble in the shoe of the Ocean City hospitality community for 75 years.

I was in Ocean City MD last weekend which is the location of the distillery….stopped at a liquor store just to grab a bottle of something for drinking around the camp fire and decided to take a chance on the local fair. Bottle is very cool…the label is actually embossed and not just a glued on paper label. Price was good…the same as I pay for Kraken or Captain Morgan Back. This stuff is amazing. It’s one of the ONLY liqueurs I can actually sip and drink straight. And it makes an AMAZING in Dark and Stormy. I was disappointed to learn it’s a limited geographical release but that disappointment gave way to sheer happiness when I got home and found out that the semi-local store in MD not far from me carries it. And on an unrelated note…the Seacrets Ruby Red Grapefruit Vodka is pretty killer too. I’ll never buy another brand of spiced rum again unless I’m desperate and in an area that doesn’t carry it.
I do still like my Kraken though…don’t get me wrong. But this is the new Kraken in my house.

This rum is fantastic. My wife was on a girls trip to OCMD and brought me a bottle of this home. I like Captain Morgan. I love Seacrets Spiced Rum. The flavors in this rum are the real deal. There is a lot going on in the taste of this rum and every sip gets better. I have friends going back to OCMD and I am putting in an order for more.

Not wanting to take the tour, I went into their ABC Liquor store on their parking lot. Ron, the cashier said I would LOVE Seacrets Spiced Rum. He said it was the smoothest sipping rum he ever tasted. So I bought a bottle. OMG, the BEST liqueur I have ever tasted! Flavor is heaven. You will regret not buying a bottle. Great news it is sold in the Baltimore area. My wife and I were on a getaway weekend over the Thanksgiving holiday and decided to do the tour. Really interesting and filled with antiques that are blended into the facility that distills the spirits. Lots to see. The end of the tour is the best part as the host was the owner of Seacrets and took excellent care of us. The pride in the product is very evident as it should be as everything we sampled was excellent. I ended up buying a bottle of the bourbon and the American whiskey while my wife got the lemon vodka. Great time, highly recommend.

The Craft Tour Experience
Walking into the distillery is a lot like walking through a time machine and coming out in the mid-1930s, sometime just after the end of Prohibition. Most of the furniture, wall pieces and decorations adorning the building are authentic to that era, and those that arent are pretty accurate replicas.
Even the elevator is accented with buttons and gadgets from the mid-20th century, which is cool even if they dont work. The ships on the elevator doors were hand-painted by a local artist.
Theres the craft liquor, but the building is kind of a craft itselfits kind of a craft tour experience, Jackie said.
Take the elevator up to the third floor and the craft tour experience is magnified. After seeing the distilling process at workmore on that belowyoure taken to a convincing shop front of a pharmacy, behind the doors of which is a pseudo-speakeasy.
It might look like a pharmacy, but dont be fooled.
Whats cool about this pharmacy, back during Prohibition the only way to get alcohol was through a physician, a dentist or a veterinarian, Cody said. You get your prescription, you take it to the pharmacy and you get it filled. Behind some pharmacies were speakeasies, so thats what we did here.
