What Is Aejo Tequila Best For

Añejo makes a great sipper. This is a tequila meant to be enjoyed neat or on the rocks, although it can be used for mixing.

The lengthy period spent in contact with the wooden barrel provides añejo a distinctive deep amber hue along with a smoky, spicy and sweet flavor with marked vanilla and caramel notes making it a pleasing pour. If you enjoy drinking bourbon whiskey you will make an easy transition to tequila, but I can assure you that agave spirits are superior to corn-based spirits more on that later.

Good distillers mature tequila in small barrels so more of the liquid enters in contact with the wood.

Fruity Drink With Tequila

Whether you’re having a get-together with friends or want to add a tasty cocktail to family dinner, a fruity drink with tequila can make any meal or celebration more enjoyable. You make your own blackberry lemonade and add tequila, or add tequila and triple sec to fruit punch and garnish with fresh lemon, lime, and orange wedges. You can create your own fruit punch with the drink mix of your choice. Add water according to the package directions, and enhance the flavor of the punch by adding pineapple juice and/or muddled strawberries before stirring in the tequila.

Is Aejo Tequila Good For Margaritas

Yes, you can pour añejo in your margarita making it smoky, spicy and sweeter. Consider the fact that añejo will give your cocktail an amber hue making it look different than a traditional margarita.

I would rather choose a reposado for my next margarita. Reposados are cheaper and mix better with most cocktails.

I enjoy añejo tequila neat or straight. On warm days I add large ice cubes as I dont like water to dilute my precious drink. Scots splash a bit of water to whisky to make it more floral but that trick doesnt work with tequila agave doesnt like water.

Of course you can mix añejo tequila in cocktails but I find reposados better suited for those affairs.

You can combine club soda or seltzer with tequila to bring out the complexity of the flavor and accent this simple yet elegant drink with a lemon or lime garnish. You can also use grapefruit soda to create a Paloma or a cola, root beer, or ginger ale for a cocktail with a more pronounced taste. Sodas with a pronounced citrus flavor are also delicious with tequila. Lemon and lime flavors pair with this Mexican spirit nicely and provide a flavor that is similar to a classic margarita.

When it comes to making spirits, theres no denying that theres varying quality. From cheap $5 a bottle wine to seven figures bottles of the finest whisky, the range at which alcohol exists is astounding. However, there are some kinds that transcend just being a bottle to share with friends and family theyre a way of life.

Many cultures are associated with a specific spirit: Mediterranean people love their wine, Germans can never get enough beer, and the Russians know their vodka inside and out. But sometimes, it can go far beyond that, and become both a sacred symbol of what you are and your most prized commodity. For Mexicans, tequila is one of those cases.

Whether you like it with lime and salt, paired with some sangrita, or served neat, tequila is a special kind of spirit. Its a protected industry, otherwise known as having a Geographical Indication , meaning that only real tequila can be made in Mexico, just like how only Scotch Whisky can be made in Scotland. You can tell if your booze is legit by a small seal on the bottle.

QUI Rare, like many of the tequilas on this list, features a dark amber color, more reminiscent of whisky or brandy than tequila.

Clase Azuls bottles are all beautiful works of art on their own: this one is inlaid with pure platinum, sterling silver and 24-carat gold.

Bonus: Crme De Violette

Admittedly not a particularly common or versatile ingredient, anyone whos ever bought an entire bottle of crème de violette to make the classic Aviation cocktail can understand the desire to find something anything! to mix with this fragrant purple liqueur. Luckily, a tequila like Milagro Silver offers the right level of floral character to pair remarkably well with crème de violette, while an older tequilas typical vanilla and baking spice notes can ease the liqueurs otherwise cloying sweetness. Just remember: A little bit goes a long way, unless you want your drink to taste like the perfume counter at Bloomingdales.

New from NOM 1602. Diffussed stuff. Pretty flat in flavor and aroma. Smoother than a cristalino.

Light and subtle off the nose, agave and cinnamon with a medium warm finish. Please note Im drinking the 1590 version and not the diffuser juice, this is a no frills tequila that tastes like it should.

Nose: Ripe fruity aromas, barrel spices, and some earthy notes. Flavor: Flavors follow the aromas. Semi oily sweetness, moderate barrel spice, a hint of almonds and a touch of pepper. Nothing offensive here, but pretty much cookie cutter. Finish: A little caramel with pepper blooming at the tail end.

Which Is Better: Aejo Or Reposado

This is a tough question and a hard one to answer as it is absolutely dependent of personal preferences. Añejos are more smoky, oaky, spicy and sweet than reposados. If you have never tried tequila I would suggest you to start with silver to later go for a reposado. Unless you are a bourbon aficionado that would allow you to make a quick transition to añejo.

Budget Pick 1800 Aejo

The 1800 añejo is a reasonably priced tequila, over delivering in every possible way. This añejo is aged in American oak casks for 12 months, with a portion of the alcohol aged for an additional two years. The palate is rich and round, full of caramel, citrus, and sweet spicy flavors. To seal their spot in the top añejo tequilas of all time, its a 2021 winner of the New York International Spirits Awards Competition.

About the distillery: 1800 añejo tequila is produced at La Rojeña Distillery, owned by the Beckmann family . La Rojeña is the oldest active distillery in Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico. In 1921, when Jose Cuervo died, management of the distillery was taken over by administrators Juan Beckmann Gallardo and Juan Beckmann Vidal before eventually passing to the Cuervo Heirs. After 200 years, Cuervos heirs still own and operate the distillery, winning multiple awards for all of their tequilas.

Peri Peri Biltong And G4 Blanco Tequila

The 50:50 mix of collected rainwater and natural spring water used in the production of this additive-free blanco creates a wonderfully complex sipping tequila. With bold cooked agave notes, hints of pepper, earth, and citrus, the G4 Blanco is one I highly recommend, Soglanich says. Produced in the El Pandillo tequila distillery, in Jesús María, the name G4 refers to the familys four generations of tequila making. With their dedication to traditional growing and production methods, I know the brand will continue to make phenomenal tequila for decades to come. Pair it with biltong, which is a traditional South African dried meat Biltong does not contain any additives and is produced using traditional herbs and spices. The spicy peri peri is a nice complement to the citrus of the blanco. This pairing is actually perfect for the health-conscious reader: Both the tequila and biltong are low carb and sugar-free options.

It has what most would consider to be a classic tequila flavor. Some love Patrón because its what they grew up with, while others find it a bit harsh. Good For: Patron Silver is a standard-bearer tequila. Great for sipping, shots, or cocktails, but there are better options for each of these purposes.

Republic Spirit Jalapeno Lime

Not every mixer needs to be simplistic in flavor. In fact, the Republic Spirit Jalapeno Lime mixer combines two of the best flavors to pair with tequila. Bottled in Michigan using fresh jalapeno and lime juice, this magical liquid is refreshing at first sip with a spicy kick on the back end. Its just the right amount of heat to compliment and mask the face-scrunching harshness of tequila. Grab a bottle of this jalapeno mixer or try Republic Spirits other mixer flavors, which include prickly pear and grapefruit lime.

Region: Jalisco | ABV: 40% | Tasting Notes: Cocoa powder, Dates, Caramel

Añejos and extra añejos should embody the flavor of the wood with the soul of the original spirit, says Hurley, so that the cooked agave flavor shines, complemented by notes of toasted oak, caramel, vanilla and cocoa powder.

This bottle from Patrón exemplifies the style. It is far too tasty, says Chasse. In part, thats due to the barrel program. A combination of used American and new French oak casks gives it a deep amber color that looks great in a snifter. Plus, a velvety mouthfeel and a drying and nearly tannic finale compels you to take another sip. But the pièce de résistance is the old Bordeaux barrels the spirit is finished in they lend a touch of the raisinated flavor youd expect from a wine.

It also does pair nicely with food, says Chasse, and if youre having a fancy day, with a fine cigar.

Region: Jalisco | ABV: 46% | Tasting Notes: Olives, Earth, Orange

If you want to know what tequila tasted like 100 years ago, Fortaleza is your go-to, says Hurley. At his estate in the town of Tequila, master distiller Guillermo Sauza makes the spirit the way his great-great-grandfather made it, using an old stone tahona and brick ovens. Bottled straight from the copper pot still without dilution, this blanco has an alluring earthy, olivey quality, says Chasse, with plenty of bright citrus, too.

Tequila + Grapefruit Soda

Essentially a Paloma, this cocktail is one of the most popular ways to drink tequila in Mexico . Its bright, citrusy, subtly bitter and downright crushable. Depending on your preference, you can use a blanco or a reposado tequila for the base of the cocktail. A blanco tequila keeps the drink light and crisp, while a reposado tequila makes it richer and more decadent. For a garnish, we recommend a fat wedge of lime and a pinch of sea salt. Come summer, this Highball is essential drinking.

“Añejo translates to aged or matured tequila, and aging is done in oak barrels for a minimum of 12 months, which imparts a lot of flavors to the spirit, says Suyash Pande, head bartender at New Yorks Baar Baar. Pande finds that añejo tequilas tend to be smoother than their counterparts, thanks to their one to three years of barrel aging.

Steve Reynolds, co-founder of Penta Tequila, agrees. An añejo, for me, needs to have spice, mouthfeel and layers of character you can only get with time and age in a barrel,” he says. “There is a balance to the wood and toast for me that makes all things sing. Dark Chocolate Chip Banana Bread And El Tesoro Aejo

Produced by master distiller Carlos Camarena, El Tesoro Añejo is created from 100% estate grown agave, cooked for three days in brick ovens and then Tahona crushed, Soglanich says. For those of you who are new to tequila, a tahona wheel is a two-ton stone made from volcanic rock thats used to crush cooked agave and separate juices from fibers. This añejo is rested for two to three years in ex-bourbon barrels and carries cooked agave, cinnamon, and oak aromas in its profile, along with hints of caramel and oak. Pair it with dark chocolate chip banana bread: The heavier sweet flavors complement the añejo well and work even better together when the banana bread is lightly toasted.

Whats The Cristalino Process

To make a cristalino you simply filter the aged tequila, usually through charcoal, to remove all or most of the color that the spirit has picked up from its time in the barrel. The process also usually removes some of the oakier notes, but retains the other flavors to produce a tequila that is as crisp as a blanco, but with all the complexity of aromas and tastes that the original aged tequila has.

Each distillery has its own filtration process to produce the type of cristalino that they want, reflecting the original tequila.
