From England To France

Back in 1550, the Hine family lived in Beaminster, Dorset, on the south coast of England. The familys great cognac journey was to begin in the 18th century: Thomas Hine, a linen merchant, decided to send his son Thomas to France to learn French and the art of making cognac. At age 16, Thomas left his family home and headed for France, setting foot in Nantes in 1791. He then traveled to Bordeaux, where he stayed for a while before continuing to Jarnac, a small town just east of Cognac. Since 1763, Jarnac had been the base for the négociants premises where Thomas was to create his fathers favorite cognac. Not long after his arrival, Thomas Hine made the acquaintance of Elisabeth, the daughter of a famous cognac négociant, and fell in love. In 1796, at the age of 21, Thomas married Elisabeth and went on to have four children.

The Hine Family Legacy Begins

Innovating With Cognac

Robert Hine, fifth generation worked alongside his father in the company during the 1930s. Robert and his brother François led HINE to start shipping cognacs in bottles. Such commercial decisions were made in the inner family circle, and the young Bernard remembers his grandfathers opposition to this progressive idea. But Robert and François decided to go ahead and bottle HINEs young cognacs: after all, the trend had been set by Thomas back in 1821 when he shipped glass flasks of cognac to England, long before bottling had become the norm.

The Royal Warrant

H By Hine Vsop Cognac: A Bright And Floral Experience

This young and floral Cognac is the flagship release from famed producer Hine. The H by Hine VSOP Cognac is a blend of over 15 different eaux-de-vie sourced from Grande and Petite Champagne, aged for a minimum of four years. The high humidity environment of the Hine cellars – located by the River Charente – slows down evaporation to create a more mellow and refined Cognac.

The history of Hine Cognac starts in the 18th Century, when a young man by the name of Thomas Hine from Dorset arrived in Jarnac to undertake administerial work for a Cognac producer. He soon fell in love with the proprietors daughter Françoise-Elisabeth and married into the family. Now the son-in-law of the owner, Thomas was able to take on a senior role and used his financial skills to make major changes, developing trade beyond France. In 1817, he officially changed the name of the company to Thomas Hine & Co.

These days, the house of Hine focuses only on the Fine Champagne growing areas, overseeing 115 hectares of land by the village of Bonneuil. Vines of Ugni Blanc grapes cover the limestone-studded hills, drawing nutrients and water deep from the chalky soil even during the hottest summers.

A blend of 20 Cognacs aged for a minimum of 4 years, from grapes grown in the Grande Champagne and the Petite Champagne regions of Cognac. ‘H’ was developed by Hine in response to bartender’s requests for an inexpensive but highly aromatic Cognac for use in cocktails. To this end they’ve succeeded.

Tasting note: Burnished brassy / copper appearance. Straightforward bouquet with good intensity, offering scents of sweet leather, dried apricot and vanilla. A soft, light to medium bodied entry level VSOP with low-key dried apricot, vanillan oak and creme caramel flavours, remaining on the drier side. Ends light, thin, short.
