Things To Remember When Making Jello Shots

When throwing a party, youll probably want to prepare 4-6 Jello Shots for each guest.

This batch uses 6 ounces of gelatin and so you will get around 18-20 Jello shots.

If doing a half recipe and only using 3 ounces of gelatin you will only get 8-10 Jello shots depending on how you pour.

If using a garnish, dont place the garnish on the jello shot until just ready to serve.

What Is Peanut Butter Whiskey

With flavored whiskies all the rage lately , its useful to consider how we got here. Back before you could buy pb-flavored liqueur already made, bartenders and mixologists were using a process called fat washing to combine the delicious, nutty beauty that is peanut butter with bourbon and whiskey.

Many bourbons and whiskies have nutty notes both in the nose and flavor. Combining those together is a natural match.

In fat washing, a food product full of fat, like peanut butter, bacon fat, or browned butter is combined with whiskey, left to sit for a few hours, then moved to a freezer for 24 hours until the solids from the fat have frozen at the top of the container. The mixture is strained through a fine-mesh sieve, then a coffee filter until the resulting whiskey is flavorful but translucent.

Fat washing adds both flavor and mouthfeel to a spirit. Whiskey becomes creamier and more viscous and with something like peanut butter as the flavoring agent, it reminds me of taking a huge bite of a pb sandwich with the feel of it thick throughout the mouth.

With the current brands commercially available, the liqueurs have tilted to the sweet side of the spectrum, and although they are full of peanut butter flavor they dont have quite the depth of flavor of a naturally fat-washed whiskey. With the peanut butter whiskies Ive tried I get a lot of butterscotch on the nose, and a lot of very sweet peanut flavors.

I get people all the time, especially from my husbands workplace, asking me to create a jello shot recipe.

Out of one of their favorite drinks or a drink they had at a bar.

Im always willing to give it a try.

And I appreciate the suggestions as they help me be creative.

A few years back I found a bottle of Skrewball.

Which is peanut butter whiskey.

I didnt buy it because I thought oh gee peanut butter whiskey sounds good.

I bought it because of the label.

My hockey team is called the Black Sheep.

And well, the label has a black sheep on it.

Turned out I really like peanut butter whiskey.

It was suggested to me at the time I bought it to try it with grape soda.

Which is how these came about.

But apparently my husbands co-worker didnt realize I had made those.

She had a cocktail of Skrewball and Chambord and wanted to know if I could make that in Jello Shot form.

I could.

If you are unfamiliar with Chambord its a lovely raspberry liqueur out of France.

You can find it most places as its been around for quite some time.

Highballs And Tall Cocktails

PB& J Highball: Add 1.5 ounces of pb whiskey to a tall glass, fill with ice, and top with strawberry seltzer water.

Fluffernutter Highball: Add 1 ounce of peanut butter whiskey and 1 ounce of marshmallow vodka to a highball glass. Fill with ice and top with club soda or unflavored seltzer water. Garnish with marshmallows.

Peanut Butter Whiskey Sour: Make a classic sour with 1 oz peanut butter liqueur, 1 oz bourbon, 1 oz lemon juice and ½ oz simple syrup. Shake together and strain into a rocks glass over ice.

This time around I did add actual jam to the shot.

I do think it adds an extra layer of flavor and helps it taste more like a PB and J.

I used just water in these but you could substitute the water with some raspberry seltzer water if you wanted a little more flavor.

Both my husband and his co-worker say dont skip the chopped peanuts as garnish.

They both say it really adds something to the shots.
