The History Of Thomas Tew
At its peak, Newport had 22 distilleries, making it the rum capital of the world. In its colonial days, Rhode Island was awash in distilleries, most of which used molasses to make the liquor known as rum. The Thomas Tew name was conceived from a known dreaded pirate of the 1600s, Thomas Tew. He was a respected member of a prominent Newport family before partaking in his infamous pirate conquests.

Sometimes A Mere Bottle Just Wont Do
Having a well-stocked bar or wine cellar can be impressive. But its childs play compared to owning an entire barrel of your favorite brand. A number of wineries and distilleries allow you to buy by the barreland even give you a say in what goes into the cask. In other words, youll not only get a couple hundred bottles worth of booze, youll also get to brag about pouring your own special blend and maybe even give a couple away as gifts. Talk about a cool wedding party favor. Grooms, are you listening? Heres how you can buy whiskey, tequila and wine by the barrel.
A barrel of Jack: Arguably Americas most recognized whiskey, Jack Daniels is one of the few distilleries that allow you to buy by the barrel. A barrel of Jack will set you back anywhere between $9,000 and $12,000 , so you might want to split it with friends. Why no fixed price? Because it all depends on the angels share, the term used to refer to the liquid that evaporates as the spirit ages.
A barrel of bourbon: To buy a barrel of Four Roses bourbon, the first thing youll need is a licensed retailer to act as a middleman. Of course, the good folks at Four Roses can always help you find a local retail connection, if necessary. Master Distiller Jim Rutledge will help you hand pick your bottle, but only after much sampling. Youll taste your way through more than a dozen pre-selected barrels that Jim sets aside before you arrive.

The Life Cycle Of A Barrel At Montanya Distillers
Montanya uses 53-gallon, charred, white oak barrels from Laws Whiskey that held whiskey anywhere from two to five years. When they show up at the bottling and distribution center two miles south of Crested Butte, they still have a tiny bit of whiskey sloshing around the bottom. That becomes part of the flavor when we fill the barrel with un-aged rum.
In any given barrel, we age our Oro rum first, for one year. After removing the Oro, we refill the barrel and age Platino, also for one year. Each barrel can actually be used to age Platino twice, so a single barrel can produce three batches of rum. And once were finished with a Laws barrel, we sell it to beer makers.
We have two additional barrels in our lineup as well: a French Oak barrel that previously held Cabernet Sauvignon and Port , and an American White Oak barrel that previously held Peach Street Bourbon .

I am an avid bourbon and rye drinker. I was recently on a cruise and decided to try one of their premium rums.I happened on Cruzan and was surprised. It was sweeter then bourbon for sure, it was not subtle in many flavor areas. The nose was confusing, just so much going on, but the caramel, cherry, vanilla and molasses were evident. The taste followed the nose and I enjoyed the punch of the caramel, almost tasted like an old fashioned. The finish was sweet, almost like Dr. Pepper.

The Science Of The Barrels
Barrels or rum in the distribution center.
When rum or other spirits age in a barrel, the liquor moves in and out of the pores of the wood. That action imparts various flavors from the wood into the spirit. According to Brice, studies have shown that about 200 different chemical reactions happen between the barrels and the liquor, and the longer the spirit sits in the barrel, the more reactions can take place.
Distillers primarily use charred barrels because the charring breaks open the pores of the barrel and allows the rum or whiskey to move deeper into the wood. It also adds color faster. The level of char will vary, and distillers put spirits into barrels at different proofs based on the flavors they want out of the barrel.
Whiskey, for example, goes in at 110. Montanya Distillers rum goes in at 150. At 110, the spirit absorbs leathery and tobacco notes, and at 150, there are more notes like clove, vanilla, nutmeg, and cardamom.

This fine imported rum has its roots in tropical Belize. It is very aromatic rum with lots of flavor. Some described the rum’s nose as floral because of the aroma reminds of hibiscus and papaya fruit. If tasted straight, One Barrel Rum is quite smooth without a bite to it, followed with a slight taste of Molasses. The molasses flavor isn’t overpowering, but nicely sitting in the background. Such properties make One Barrel Rum well mixable not only with juices and colas. The hint of molasses seems to complete the flavor of the mixers improving the taste. Not surprisingly this rum attracted the eye and taste buds of judges in San Francisco World Spirits competition and Cane Spirits Festival which awarded it Gold and Silver medals.

The Magic And Mystery Of Barrels
Many people dont realize that all Montanya Rum starts out the same waythe un-aged rum that comes out of the stills can become any one of our rums. Its the aging process that creates their distinctive flavor profiles. Montanya Rums age for anywhere from one to four years, and the barrels theyre stored in play a big role in the ultimate flavor and color profiles.
This Laws Whiskey House barrel ages Montanya Oro.
Co-founder and head distiller Brice Hoskin likes to say that barrels are magic. And theres truth to that. Sure, science can explain a lot of what happens and its fascinating: rum moves in and out of the barrels pores, for example, and compounds like sucrose and vanillin get extracted from the wood and add specific notes of flavor to the rum.
Yet theres still a sense of mystery to why distillers can take high proof, sharp-as-heck alcohol, put it in a wood barrel and have it come out smooth and flavorful. That mystery is one of the things Brice and co-founder Karen love about making rum, and about sharing that process with others. The best things in life always seem to be a combination of science and art.
We get a lot of questions about the barrels on tours and in the Tasting Room, so while we know our love of barrels borders on science nerd, we thought wed share some of that info here:

Still A Pretty Good Dry Rum8out Of 10

Having read some unfavourable reviews I was a little hesitant to buy this bottle, which retails for $40 in my area. Those who prefer sweet rum probably won’t appreciate this rum as much as I did. I found Cruzan Single Barrel to be well balanced and simply delicious.
UPDATE : Have tried many different rums since I first purchased CSB, Recently opened another bottle as I hadnt sampled this rum for over 6 months and as I said above, it is delicious. More an 8.5 rating than 8. Definitely will be keeping a supply of this rum on hand.
UPDATE : While the bottle design has changed twice since I first tasted this rum I find little or no difference with the new bottle design. This is not a top ten rum but I simply really like the flavours and the fact that it is so dry. The low price just adds to the charm of this offering by Cruzan distillery. If I could I would score this rum 8.5 to 8.6. In my books I will always keep a number of Cruzan Single Barrel in my rum inventory.

The Barrels That Montanya Distillers Acquires From Laws Whiskey House Are Made By Cooperage If You Or Someone You Know Has The Last Name Of Cooper Its Probable That Someone In Your Or Their Lineage Was A Barrel Maker
We heart our dogs and our barrels at Montanya Distillers.
One other thing to note: the rum we put into the barrels is about 75% alcohol and 25% water. The alcohol dissolves some things in the wood and the water dissolves others. All of those become part of the rums flavor profile.
Our Platino and Oro rums are also the only single-barrel rums that we know of. Each bottle tells you the exact 53-gallon barrel that it came out of, making it traceable and slightly unique from other barrels. Every Oro is an Oro and Platino a Platino, but line up several bottles from different barrels, and an experienced palate will likely detect subtle differences.
How Its Made
Our distillers still use a process similar to that employed in the eighteenth century, mixing blackstrap molasses with local water and fermenting it in tanks. This process yields a liquid called a wash that is then distilled twice. The resulting spirit is aged for several years in oak second-generation American bourbon barrels. Each barrel is tested, if not ready, the barrel will sit for another season before being checked again for quality and taste. Finally, the rum is individually bottled, corked, and sealed with wax.
