What Is Rum Made From Your Questions Answered
by Rodney Brazil·
One of the most popular liquors in the world is rum. Here in the United States, rum is an ingredient in so many common mixed drinks, many casual party goers dont even realize its there. To this day, I still have to think twice to remember whats in a daiquiri. If youve ever enjoyed a rum cocktail, and most likely you have, you might have wondered what rum is made of, or where it started in the first place. Heres a short, highly informative guide to all things rum, including a little unknown history, some mind-blowing facts, and the always evolving answer to what rum is made of.
Sadler’s Peaky Blinder Black Spiced Rum
Named after the Birmingham-based Peaky Blinders street gang from the late 19th/early 20th century, this is a traditional blackened spiced rum blended with spices and dark caramel.
It erupts with big flavours of vanilla, cloves, flamed orange peel, treacle, sticky toffee and burnt caramel. A classic dark spiced rum, it’s made to be mixed in a highball glass with ginger beer as a dark & stormy, or with cola and a slice of lime.

Legality Of Spiced Rum
Now Iâm quickly gonna talk about the legality of spiced rum. Now, I donât mean that in the sense that spiced rum is not legal, Iâm talking about ABVs and sugar contents and things like that. This is where kind of rum aficionado, rum enthusiasts really donât like what spiced rum represents because traditionally rum is 40%. Okay in the UK it can legally be 37.5%. But if you go over to America, places like that, it is legally 40%. Now, in the UK, the three big, huge brands, so Lambâs, Captain Morganâs and Bacardi, they cannot legally be classed as a spiced rum because the ABV of them are either 30 or 35%.
For me, I donât know the ins and outs but, for me, theyâve done it purely for tax reasons, theyâll pay less tax on that. But they are, in fact, classed as a rum based spiced drink. Okay so theyâre spirit based. Essentially they are a liqueur. Iâm not gonna discount Lambâs, Captain Morganâs, Bacardi or any of the other brands like that because this is why I love the spiced rum category so much. Itâs because, for me, it represents fun. Anything goes, whether itâs cocktails, whether itâs spirit and mixers. A lot of these you can drink neat and absolutely lovely neat as a little tipple at night. So itâs just that whole category. And running pubs and bars as well, itâs just that simple spirit that is so diverse, it is the most diverse category. Most diverse drink on the market.
Whats The Difference Between Light And Dark Rum
In terms of the distinction between those two major categories of rum, the differences arenât as much product of whatâs done to the rum as much as where it ages. Most jurisdictions require all rums to age for at least a year, and some of the finer Jamaican rums typically age for upwards of five. These days, your lighter, younger rums are often aged in stainless steel tanks. On the other hand, your darker, aged rums primarily get their color from aging in oak barrels. Sometimes, caramel is added once the aging process is complete in order to really amp up that amber, golden hue.

What Is Rum Made From
The nutshell answer is: rum is made from sugar. To get a little more specific, rum is made from either cane sugar, or the byproducts of cane sugar, such as molasses and black treacle. Its then fermented, distilled, and aged in oak barrels. Other ingredients are sometimes added to create a wider variety of flavors, including caramelized sugar, fruit extracts, and spices. With modern, mass-produced rums, different ages of rum are blended to create a more consistent flavor, and caramel may be added at the end to create a uniform color from batch to batch.
One of the only things that hasnt changed throughout the ages is that rule that rum is made from cane sugar. The 1771 edition of Encyclopedia Britannica included this definition:
RUM. A species of brandydistilled from sugarcanes. Rum differs from simple sugar spirit in that it contains more of a natural flavour or essential oil of the sugarcane the flavour of rum is really the effect of the natural flavour of the cane.
Even if not used as ingredients, certain flavors are typically found in rum. This is due to the geographical surroundings of the sugar cane fields, as well as the production process. Lynn Hoffman, in her book, Short Course in Rum: A Guide to Tasting and Talking About Rum, she lists cane, caramel, vanilla, nutmeg, allspice, dried fruit, as common notes in good quality rums.
