What Type Of Oil Is The Best To Use
The best type of oil to use is an oil specifically for frying. Some use olive oil, but we do not recommend it as it could burn the fish fillet.
Vegetable oil would work, and you can also use avocado oil which has the highest smoke point.
FUN FACT: The smoke point is the temperature wherein the oil breaks down before it starts smoking. If you want the fried fish to be deep-fried, you need an oil that has a high smoke point.
Another oil that has a high smoke point is corn oil. It is also very affordable and can continue frying until 450 degrees Fahrenheit.
Of course, we wont need to fry the fish at this temperature, but this just means that this oil can handle high temperatures and will not burn your fish.
Here are other types of oil that you can rely on when you are making crispy beer-battered fish:
The Best Beer Battered Fish
Beer batter can be contentious. When done right, it is light, airy, and crunchyperfectly complimenting the fillet within. When done poorly, it can be heavy, doughy, and overpowering.
Beer battered fish takes more attention to detail than other method of frying, so its best to work in small batches. Different beers will yield varied flavors. I like a robust beer, like an IPA or stout, but any American light lager works great, too.
Best Fish for Beer BatterFish with white fillets are ideal for beer batter. Fish with large flakes, like halibut and redfish, really shine for frying. Cut bigger fillets into one-inch-thick pieces for a good fillet-to-batter ratio.
Best Oil for Beer BatterI like a mix of peanut oil and lard or beef tallow, but plain vegetable oil is great, too. If you want more options for frying, check out Danielle Prewetts article on the best oils for deep frying.
Get the oil to 375° F and allow it to recover to this temperature before frying each batch. Use a slotted spoon or strainer for turning the fish and paper towels or wire rack for draining.
Temperature is key for making the perfect beer battered fish. Keep the meat and batter as cold as possible, and the oil as hot as possible. This creates an immediate puff of the batter and makes for a lighter, crunchier end product. A digital thermometer is great for precise temperature reading.

What To Pair With Beer Battered Fish
Whats crispy fried fish without a solid dip? I always pair beer battered fish with my homemade, dill-forward tartar sauce , malt vinegar, and a squeeze of lemon.
If you have not had malt vinegar before, it is a type of vinegar that is made with malted grains of barley. It has a unique astringency, deep brown color and goes incredibly well with beer battered fish.
If you have had fish and chips before, you have probably tasted malt vinegar. Either way, when making this recipe, get your hands on a bottle and thank me later.
Another great and obvious pairing is french fries. I cut corners and go for frozen french fries and then toss them in the air fryer for a few minutes, and there you have itfish-and-chips.
In a sandwich mood? Slap a fillet between two buns slathered with my homemade dilly tartar sauce and enjoy!

Do I Need Rice Flour To Create The Batter
No, the rice flour is not part of the batter, but of the dredging flour. You may be wondering, what is the use of dredging flour?
This flour is used to make sure that the fish will stick to the batter before you deep fry it. This is part of the deep frying procedure.
Make sure to dredge fish in the rice flour first before you put it into the batter. This will help the crispy beer batter to be more consistent and sticky to the fish.
How To Make The Beer Batter
Beer-battered fish is exactly that: fish dipped in a beer batter and deep-fried. While the batter is simply flour and seasonings whisked together with cold beer, Ive found that adding in some rice flour makes the coating lighter and crispier. In fact, the fish will stay crisp for up to 30 minutes after its fried.
You dont need any fancy beer here, either any lager will do. Just make sure its straight-out-of-the-fridge cold .

Crispy Beer Battered Fish
For the lightest, crispiest fried fish, you cant beat Beer Battered Fish. The yeast and carbonation in beer makes the fish batter delicate and puffy, like at good fish n chip shops. Meanwhile the shock of ice-cold batter hitting hot oil makes it super-crispy and whats more, it stays crispy for ages.

What Is The Best Pair For A Crispy Beer Battered Fish
Aside from the classic tartar sauce, you can eat fish that has been beer-battered with a sauce that is zesty and citrusy.
The tastiest pairing comes from the fruit juices, such as orange sauce, apricot sauce, and lemon and citrus fruit sauce.
The citrus from these sauces pairs off well with the taste of the fish. However, if you do not want that, you can also opt to create a chilly or pepper sauce and mustard sauce.

How To Make Beer Battered Fish
Oil heating aside, beer battered fish takes 5 minutes to prepare, and each batch takes 3 minutes to fry. Terrifically fast!
Dry & cut fish Dry fillets well, especially if using thawed frozen fish because it will leech water while defrosting. This is key to crispy fish, so dont shortcut this!
Cut into desired size. I like fish cocktail size 7 x 3cm / 3 x 1 1/4 batons because its easier to handle for frying plus has a larger surface area to volume ratio = more crunch! Whole or larger fillets work just fine as well, ie. traditional fish n chip shop format.
If your fish is very thick , slice horizontally to make thinner pieces, otherwise the fish may not cook through by the time the batter is golden and crispy. Also, there will be too much fish and not enough crispy batter!
Just remember the batter puffs up when cooking to double the thickness it was wet so dont make giant fish pieces!
Start heating oil Heat oil to 190°C/375°F. Hot oil is key to ensure the fish doesnt end up soggy and greasy. Use a large, heavy-based pot for safety purposes, for even heating of oil and better heat retention. You can of course use an electric fryer if you have one!
Rice flour coating Dust fish with rice flour, shaking off excess. This is an additional crispiness insurance policy, which will soak up any residual moisture on the flesh of the fish. I use rice flour because it cooks up more crisp than flour.
What Type Of Beer Should You Use For Crispy Beer Battered Fish
Go for a Mexican lager or light lager. I typically go for a can of Modelo or Tecate. Whichever you choose, just make sure its cold. Bonus: you can treat yourself to whats left in the can!
Oh, and if youre worried about the alcohol content in the beer, dont worry it will cook off during the frying process.

What Type Of Fish Is Best For Beer
The best type of fish to use in a beer-battered fish recipe are fishes that are meaty and suitable for frying.
The following are our favorites for the classic fish and chips and beer-battered fish:
Always opt for the fleshy ones because they are the most suitable for deep frying. We suggest that you do not use oily fish such as salmon, trout, and mackerel.
Delicate fishes are also not combative with crispy batter. Fishes like flounder and sole tend to crumble even when they are deep-fried.
We also do not recommend using tuna, kingfish, marlin, and swordfish as they dry too easily inside, especially when deep fried.

Why Does My Beer Batter Fall Off Fish
Some excess wet batter will naturally disperse or fall off the fish when you put it in the fryer. However, whats not normal is if it is not sticking to the fried fish.
Another reason why the batter is not sticking to the fish is the way it is tossed into the hot oil.
To ensure that the fish fry inside the beer batter, try tossing the fish SLOWLY into the hot oil.
Do not rush when making beer-battered fish, as this may cause the cold batter to come off.
Fish will fry properly when there is enough space, too. We know youre excited to try the crispy beer-battered fish, but the crispy fried fish only happens when there is enough space.
Too much fish being fried inside the pot will drop the temperature, causing the batter to come off. Now, the fried fish recipe will not be complete if it loses the crispiness, right?
Do not stack the fried fish on top of one another, as the cold batter will come off, too.
Another reason is the consistency of the batter. There is a reason why we add egg and cornstarch to the mix. These two help the batter stick to the fish!
How Can I Make Homemade Tartar Sauce
As cliche as it may sound, tartar sauce remains the best pairing for ANY seafood, and this includes our class beer battered fish.
To be frank, all you need is five minutes to whip up your own tartar sauce, which will save you some dollars from the supermarket.
Once you learn how to create your own tartar sauce, you wont need to buy another tartar sauce again!
Here are the ingredients that you will need:
All you need to do is mix all of these ingredients in a bowl, and your tartar sauce is ready to be served.
Yes, its that simple.
However, if you want to add more flavor to your sauce, you can always opt to add capers, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, olives, and onion.

How To Make Beer Batter Fish Fry
Ill be honest, I am NOT a drinker, so while I dont ever have beer in my fridge, that wont stop me from buying it specifically for this recipe. The beer gives the batter that light airy texture, creating a thin, yet crispy coating thats totally crave-able.
Heres what youll need for the beer batter:
- All Purpose Flour
- Garlic Powder adds great flavor to the batter
- Paprika gives the batter a nice flavor, while also helping give a nice golden brown color
- Seasoned Salt feel free to adjust salt levels to taste
- Egg helps to create a nice texture and bind things together
- Beer the type of beer doesnt really matter, I like to use a dark amber beer like Dos Equis
*Theres no need to be concerned with alcohol consumption and this recipe, as the alcohol will get cooked off when the fish is fried in oil.
