Is Tin Cup Whiskey Good

Tincup American Whiskey Review

Tin Cup Whiskey Review

Bottler: Proximo Spirits at the Stranahan facility Mashbill: 64% corn, 32% rye & 4% malted barley

EYE Light caramel

NOSE A nice caramel moves out first and is soon accompanied by some light nondescript spice, rye, a light touch of wood, green apples and a touch of dill. There is a sprinkling of cinnamon and a dusty sweetness that reminds me of Sweet Tarts and Pixie Stix.

PALATE Initially it has a sweet graininess to it that gives way to cherries, rye, citrus and a bit of dill. That same nondescript spice from the nose moves effortlessly across the palate but instead of a sweetness, its accompanied by a soft minerality that rolls through at the end.

FINISH Caramel, rye, chalky minerality and a touch of wood ease out on a medium finish.

BALANCE, BODY & FEEL Its kind of a light whiskey al around and nothing stands out so in that regard its balanced. It has a thin light body and a bit of heat going down, but no more than an 84 proof whiskey should have.

SCORE: 82/100

How To Make The Tincup Rye Colorado Mule

Fill up the mini tin cup lid with Tincup Rye. Pour into any glass and add 4 oz of ginger beer. Squeeze in 1 lime and mix.

Graber encourages sippers new and old to savor this refreshing cocktail and let it take you on a well-needed mental vacation to the simple days of mountain living, where adventure and good whiskey reigned. To us, that sounds worthy of a toast.

Is Tin Cup Good Old Fashioned

Unless youre making an Old Fashioned, this whiskey wont make a great cocktail. Regardless of the way it is served, its remarkably smooth. Especially when you realize the price and the quality of this whiskey. Rather than a replacement for a cheap JD, this is what an expensive single barrel or small batch bourbon/whiskey WOULD LIKE to be, and there is no reason to discount it.

Tin Cup 10 Is What Tin Cup Whiskey Should Have Been All Along

Tin Cup 10 Year Whiskey 750ML Mr Liquor

Its always nice to see something reach its potential. For Tin Cup whiskey, the Colorado blend of bourbon and American single malt, it took just 10 years, but the wait was worth it. Tin Cup 10 is on the market now and we think its the perfect next bottle for anyone trying to expand their American whiskey library and knowledge beyond bourbon.

American Whiskey is a sort of catch-all term for everything that qualifies as whiskey but doesnt meet other standards, such as those for bourbon and rye. Two decades ago that would have implied a lack of quality. But in 2018, American Whiskey simply means innovation: people are playing their best games right now outside the confines of regulated categories.

Case in point: Tin Cup 10. Its the bottle youll want to test the waters with if youre a bourbon lover braving uncharted territory.

Its great for transition because, well, the process to make it starts with bourbon. Tin Cup is an American whiskey with a bourbon mash bill of 64 percent corn, 32 percent rye, and 4 percent malted barley sourced from MGP in Indiana. A small percentage of Stranahans Colorado Whiskey is added to the product . Once it has aged, its cut with Rocky Mountain water and bottled.

Tin Cup was admittedly never our favorite whiskeyit was tasty enough for cocktails but not much of a head turner when shopping for bottles. With this new limited-edition release, theyve made us look twice.

Tin Cup Whiskey Review: As Good As Kevin Costner In Bull Durham

Lets establish a few things first. Whiskey is delicious. Irish, Scotch, Tennessee, Canadian, Japanese, Kentucky fine bourbon, are all listed among my favorites of the brown liquor. Whiskey is also my favorite clear liquor, but thats another discussion for another day. Whiskey is great in the drift boat whiskey is great on the flats boat whiskey is great on a wading trip. There really isnt a fishing situation that wouldnt be made better by a slug. I prefer mine neat in a glass or pulled from a bottle. A little bit of ice is okay, but please dont ever mix whiskey with anything unless that whiskey came in a plastic vessel, and even then consider what youre doing carefully. You might offend someone.

This brings us to Tin Cup American Whiskey. At first glance, Tin Cup appears to be another in what seems to be a long line of ubiquitous American small batch whiskeys. The recent whiskey boom seems to have matched our demand for decent whiskeys . This Colorado whiskey is a revelation. As soon as you unscrew the Tin Cup from the top of the bottle, you realize that someone in the marketing/packaging department over there is a freaking genius, the likes of which we might never see again for generations to come.

In the world of bourbon and whiskey, sometimes a unique bottle or a label that has images of things people can associate with are two of the best ways to attract buyers. Case and point, the two whiskies before us today. I mention whiskey and not just bourbon because the Tincup is indeed, just a whiskey that is a combination of MGP bourbon distillate and Stranahans Malt Whiskey.

But it has an age statement! 10 years in fact. And look over there! The Bird Dog does too. Also 10 years. Both are low in proof and both are inevitably aimed towards an American Whiskey newcomer. Thats all well and good, but when the Tincup has a starting price in the mid $40s and the Bird Dog raises their price from $40 to more than $70, it raises the question what kind of suckers do you think we are?

But maybe Im being too hard on them. What if theyre both great whiskies? Well, theres only one way to find out, its time to pit these both in a side by side semi-blind review and see which one comes out on top. Its a tough job, but somebodys gotta do it. For this review, I sampled both of these neat and from a Glencairn.

For marketing reasons, it is being called a whiskey even though it technically fits the bourbon definition. Rocky Mountain Whiskey cuts the rye mash bill to 84 proof after adding it to this whiskey. The Story Behind Tincup Whiskey

Here at Drink Me, weve noticed the whiskey, Tincup is winning awards, garnering excellent reviews and securing a ubiquitous presence in on-premise locations across the country as well as retail stores. Curious as we are, we pondered from where did the name Tincup arise? Heres what we found out.

Tincup Whiskey embodies the spirit, romance and heritage of the great outdoors. It was created to reward a day filled with extraordinary mountain moments but theres a good reason for that connection. The whiskey salutes its heritage with its rugged hexagonal bottle embossed with mountain references.

Tincup Whiskey takes its title from Tincup, Colorado, an old mining town set on the Western Slope of Colorado. The town is named after the tin cups the resident workers drank their whiskey from following a day down in the depths of the Rocky Mountains.

Tincup is a classic American whiskey with a bourbon-style profile. Using a blend of midwestern rye, corn and malt, the whiskey is aged in American white oak barrels and cut with Rocky Mountain water. This is a high rye mash bill with spice and pepper, balanced with sweeter notes from bourbon.

Jess Graber began distilling over 40 years ago after he was gifted a 10-gallon still. A true American mountain man, Graber ran a construction company, rode rodeo and volunteered as a firefighter before he created Tincup Whiskey.

Is Tin Cup Whiskey Good

In terms of the whiskey, there is nothing wrong with it, it is quite serviceable and even a bit interesting, but it is lacking something in terms of lasting power and the impression it leaves. You may want to try this if you like soft whiskeys and a lower proof.

If you plan on drinking it chilled, stick the jar in the freezer and let it sit there for a few hours. I order 3 kinds of whisky and coke. I think its just a matter of providing the sweetness. It can possibly be adjusted a tad more if you feel like it, but it is not a great cocktail by any means. A six-sided Old Fashioned served. It seems like a decent cocktail is right there.

The Name Comes From Mining Traditions

Tin Cup American Whiskey – Review

The name Tin Cup Whiskey is inspired by the mining traditions of Colorado. Throughout history, the miners in this state would take a tin cup with them to work from which they would drink. At the end of the day, their beverage of preference was usually whiskey. Gerber chose the name to reflect the history and traditions of the Colorado mountains.

Tin Cup Whiskey Review

Tin Cup is a mixture of popular whiskey of America, each of which is aged in charred oak barrels.

It was founded by John Graber who has his own whiskey-based company in Colorado.

The drink got its name by getting inspired by the mining traditions of Colorado in which the miners carry their tin cups to drink beverages .

The liquor is golden in color with the extreme stout smell initially. But the careful smell offers the delightful odor of vanilla and brown sugar.

The caramel taste and super strong aroma of citrus, black pepper, and ginger snaps grab many people towards it.

Also, the rye whiskey gives the drink a spicy rye flavor with a little essence of cinnamon and caramel.

Here is the recipe of the whiskey described in brief.

Tin Cup Recipe

The preparation of the drink starts with three secret ingredients: rye, corn, and malted barley.

  • Gather all the ingredients and distilled them to whiskey.
  • The high-rye bourbon is distilled it to a whiskey.
  • Post distillation, the drink is aged in oak barrels until it gets the perfect taste.

*In General, the Tin Cup Whiskey is aged for four years in American White oak barrels.

The proof of drink is then cut with the use of the Rocky Mountain Spring Water which gives the drink the name as Tin Cup Mountain Whiskey.

The less proof is the reason for the smooth yet bold taste of the drink. No doubt, the one who tries the drink loves its because of great taste and better finish.

Where Is Tin Cup Mountain Whiskey Made

While Tincup is marketed as a Colorado product, it is not actually manufactured there, and has no connection to Indianas craft distilling movement. A Midwest grain has been ground in Indiana, and then the beer has been shipped to Colorado where it has been cut with local water and is then bottled at Stranahans.
