Some Whisky Is Dyed Macallans Is All
Theres something hypnotic about the brown-sugary luster of whisky. Theres also something artificial. Most of us dont know that, and most of us consciously or not tend to judge a whiskys depth by a color thats artificially hued. Macallan is one of the few whisky producers that doesnt use caramel coloring, which is why it seems to pack inordinate amounts of chewy fruit flavor despite a light color.

The distillery has 36 stills, comprising 12 wash stills and 24 spirit stills.

What Makes A Macallan Whisky
Macallan was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher. The distillery was one of thefirst to receive a legal licence in Scotland.
Located on a 390-acre estate in the Scottish Highlands and by the River Spey, Macallan is a Speyside whisky: a single malt Scotch distilled in Strathspey. Speyside whiskies are known for their lightness and sweetness, more approachable than peat-heavy Islay whiskies, and with unique apple, pear, honey, vanilla, and spice notes.
Distillation takes place in 25 copper stillsthe smallest to be found in Speyside, holding 3,900 litres each. This reduced size allows the maximum surface contact between the alcohol and the copper, lending the drink adistinct richness and body.
Only 16% of the distilled spirit is used. By picking just the finest cut, the distillery can ensure that famously smooth and viscous mouth-feel and that fruity aroma and flavour.
Next, the question of barrels. At Macallan, the emphasis is firmly on the casks. In fact, they are the only Scotch distillers with a designated Master of Wood whose job it is to source the barrels from trees in the US and Spain, after which they are dried, shaped, and seasoned.
Today, Macallan spends more per cask than any other distillery.
In terms of colour, Macallan whisky is quite lightbut dont let that put you off. Many whiskies get their golden hue from artificial colourings and so Macallans lighter shade is actually proof of its superior quality.
Macallan 63 Year In Lalique $460000
A bottle of 64-year-old Macallan whisky in a Lalique Cire Perdue decanter was placed at an auction in 2010. At the time of its sale, it was the most expensive whiskey ever sold and no less than the Guinness World Records testified to the feat. The craziest part of the sales was that the proceeds were given to charity.

What Does Macallan Do Differently
The Mac uses much smaller stills than the average size at most distilleries. While at first this might seem limiting, it actually produces much more concentrated low-wine. The smaller batches are easier to control, so the master distiller has a much easier time being precise in their measurements and cuts. Smaller batches also means greater interaction with the copper of the pot stills, which adds greater flavor.
The famous Macallan stills make an appearance on Scottish Bank Notes.
What Makes Macallan Special
Macallan is known across the globe for producing excellent whisky and doing so consistently. They set the example for what a single malt Scotch should be. The aging process gives it balance and character, making it recognizable as a Macallan.Macallan is unique because they produce consistent quality better than most other manufacturers youll find today. Despite their large production, theyve stayed true to this quality throughout. In fact, many people think of a distillery like Macallan that produces the volume they do to be a corporate bottling facility with the bottom dollar on their mind. However, Macallan has always put quality above production numbers, and in doing so, have been able to achieve success in both.

Alternatives To Macallan At Comparable Prices
The Speyside region of Scotland is the most prolific Scotch producing region in Scotland and possibly in the world. There are many Speyside scotches to choose from when looking for something comparable to Macallan, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Here are a few to look out for:
Produced at the Glenlivet distillery in Ballindalloch in the Glenlivet parish of the Moray region, it is the most popular single malt scotch in the United States today and the second most widely sold single malt in the world. Glenlivet is competitive in price and quality with Macallan and offers 12, 14, 15, 18, 21, and 25 year bottles in their standard retail offerings.
Balvenie is distilled in Dufftown, Scotland, and owned by William Grant & Sons. In operation since 1892, Balvenie was the first to pioneer cask finishing. Cask finishing is the process by which a whisky aged in one type of cask is switched to the second type of cask for its final few months of aging, imbuing it with a new range of properties and flavors. Balvenie has a core line consisting of their 12 year doublewood bottle, 14 year caribbean cask, 17 year doublewood and 21 year portcask. Im particularly fond of the 14 year carribean cask, which is finished in rum barrels. The Balvenie line is a great chance to compare the effects of cask aging on a whisky, especially when held up side by side with a Macallan Sherry Cask.

What Are The Different Kinds Of Whiskey
Before trying a new bottle of whiskey, its important to remember the core varieties. Below are eight of the most important types of whiskey to be familiar with.
Bourbon: Bourbon is the go-to for many whiskey drinkers because it has a sweet, smokey flavor thats easy to sip on its own or mixed in an old fashioned. Sometimes called American whiskey, bourbon is corn-based , aged in new charred oak barrels, and 80 proof or higher.
Tennessee: Tennessee whiskey is technically bourbon, but Tennessee whiskey distillers might not agree with that. This is because Tennessee whiskey must be produced in the state using a charcoal steeping process called the Lincoln County Process before aging. This mellows the whiskey, creating a smoother taste.
Rye: Rye whiskey is pretty self-explanatory: it must be made primarily from rye. The American whiskey uses the same aging process as bourbon in new charred oak barrels. It also yields a spicy flavor that makes it the whiskey of choice for certain cocktails such as Manhattans.
Irish Whiskey: The Eire and Northern Ireland produce Irish whiskey using primarily barley and malt. The aging process in Ireland takes at least three years in wooden casks and produces a very smooth liquor.
Scotch Whisky: The Scots make their whisky using malted barley or grain, oak casks and an aging process of at least three years. Scotchs flavor is often likened to bourbon but shows off a distinct smoky flavor.

The Macallan Cask Company Is Crazy About Its Whiskey. A Spanish cooperage has dried, shaped, and seasoned the oak barrels with Oloroso sherry, which adds richness to the final product. The process costs about 10 times as much as most oak barrels produced today. Thats why its common to find bottles like these.

Macallan Exists Because A Schoolteacher Wanted To Get You Sauced
If only all teachers were like this. Alexander Reid, both a barley farmer and schoolteacher, founded The Macallan Distillery in 1824, a year after the Scottish Excise Act legalized distilling. Reid started early, and small the first whisky Macallan ever produced came out of a woodshed and just two pot stills. By 2013, the company announced plans to build a 100 million pound production facility.
A High Cost Of Production
The Macallan Distillery is known for using premium ingredients and high-quality casks/barrels. The barley they use costs 45% more than the average. Their Sherry Cask is specially made from conditioned Spanish Oak which costs $1,500-$1800. This is many times higher than the cost of an ex-Bourbon cask which you can purchase for $100-$200 each. Their blends also undergo a series of meticulous processes and trials.

Why Are Macallan Casks So Expensive
The skys the limit when it comes to the price of the rarest casks of liquid gold. In 2019 a 30-year old cask of The Maccallan was sold by Bonhmans in Hong Kong at auction for $572,000, an eye-popping amount for an ex-sherry hogshead of single malt. These super sales are just a symptom of a market that is booming, with casks of rare single malt becoming one of the most coveted assets for investors looking to protect their wealth in a volatile market.
There is an enormous range of casks available to investors at diverse prices. From simple, New Make Casks from lesser known distilleries, available from as little as £2000, to highly prized, decades-old Blue-Chip casks from renowned distilleries that can easily fetch six-figure prices.
But, as in all markets, price is a complex determination of value based on both subjective and objective factors. So, what makes some casks worth more than others?
Whisky Economics 101
Before the great whisky boom of the 1980s, Scotlands distilleries often struggled to make ends meet due to the economic challenges of manufacturing a product that takes years to come to market. Releasing casks for sale was a good way to generate the income they needed for their day-to-day operations. However, as whisky started to become the tipple of choice in a growing economy, stock began to struggle to keep up with demand and it was no longer in the distilleries interest to sell their casks on the open market.
