Here’s a new twist on an old drink: gluten-free distilled spirits. After a 2012 Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau interim ruling, gluten-free labeled vodkas hit the market this year, including National Basketball Association legend Shaquille ONeals gluten-free Luv Shaq.
Gluten, a protein in wheat, barley and rye, causes severe gastrointestinal symptoms in people suffering from the autoimmune disorder celiac disease . According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, three million Americans suffer from CD, which attacks the lining of the small intestine and keeps the body from absorbing necessary nutrients. The FDA says CD is linked to anemia, osteoporosis, diabetes, autoimmune thyroid disease and intestinal cancers.
Amidst these serious concerns for celiac sufferers, healthy food eaters and celebrities are living gluten-free lifestyles, increasing the demand for gluten free products.
But the new spirits labeling trend contradicts long-standing advisories from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that all distilled spirits are gluten-free unless it is added after distillation. So is this all a marketing gimmick?

Since corn is a type of grain, one could speculate that Skyy might be made from corn but this cannot be confirmed. It only mentions on their website that they use American grain.
However, since Skyy is more often associated with wheat, theres a slim chance that Skyy uses corn as the base ingredient for their vodka.

Is Skyy Vodka Grain Alcohol
Skyy Vodka is not a grain alcohol because its highest alcohol content is 45% ABV or 90 proof. In contrast, a grain alcohol is required to have a minimum ABV of 95%.
However, just like most vodkas, Skyy is made from grain alcohol. After the base ingredients are fermented and the resulting alcohol is distilled, it reaches an ABV of around 92 to 95%.
Nonetheless, brands like Skyy need to dilute the grain alcohol they produce to a minimum of 40% ABV which is the acceptable bottling strength for vodka in the United States.

What Is Vodka Made From
Most people think that vodka is made solely from potatoes, but this is actually a common misconception.

Vodka is also produced from products like potato, grapes, sorghum wheat and other non-gluten containing ingredients but wheat is the most common base ingredient for vodka.

This is disputed by some, so for now, all we have to go off is the manufacturers word, or stick to vodkas thatre distilled using non-grain ingredients.
