1800 Reposado 100% Agave Tequila Review (Jalisco, Mexico)

This plant grows in hot, dry areas of Mexico, where it is harvested year round. Agave should provide the tequilas primary flavors..

A Buying Guide To Tequilas

The tequilas recommended here are by no means a comprehensive list, but rather suggestions for widely available tequilas across many price points.

Some good buying guidelines are:

  • Avoid anything that is packaged in plastic or that costs less than $15 as these are signs of cheap tequila thatll burn like hellfire down your throat and taste like lighter fluid.
  • Buy only tequila that states 100% agave on the bottle.
  • Its perfectly reasonable to find a smooth, flavorful tequila for $25-$30 thats great for shots, cocktails, or sipping. A high price does not always indicate high quality.
  • If theres a worm or scorpion or, really, any animal in the bottle, then dont buy it. Its a marketing gimmick used to sell cheaply produced tequilas and its almost guaranteed to be dreck.

Nom Or Normas Oficial Mexicana

One of the most telling parts of a tequila label is one that youve probably never noticed before: the Normas Oficial Mexicana, or NOM, number. The NOM listing on the label means that the tequila was made following the regulations set by the Tequila Regulatory Council, or TRC. There are four numbers after the letters NOM, and those numbers are the distillery code. The vast majority of distilleries produce more than one brand. Casamigos, for example, is made at the distillery labeled NOM 1416, which is the same as Avion, Clase Azul and others. You can find which NOM number pairs with which distillery simply by Googling it or checking tequila.net.

Next time you pick up a bottle, look for all of these signifiers to make sure youre getting a real bottle of tequila.

1800 Reposado Tequila 100% Agave | SIP OR DRIP REVIEW

Traditionally, many Americans prefer their tequila in a shot glass with some salt and a lime, which is OK. There is no wrong way to drink tequila, Koerner says. Shooting spirits has always been a means to achieve the effect of imbibing spirits while minimizing the consumers experience with the flavors of poorly made and often alarmingly cheap spirits. If you do decide to take a shot of tequilaagain, no judgment heresome of our favorite chasers are fresh squeezed grapefruit juice, orange slices sprinkled with cinnamon or spiced salt, or a fresh slice of lime. And try to avoid bottom shelf brands when taking shots. If you shoot something nice, you wont regret it the next day, Hermosillo adds. If you shoot something bad, you will definitely regret it the next day.

Our job as bar pros is to be skeptical, but when I took the first sip, I was like, Oh, this is divine, says Chasse. A lot of bottles that people think about for gifting are on the sweeter side, but this one is not super sweet. Instead, the aging program, in both new French and new American oak, lends it complexity and balance.

Chasse finds plenty of peppery spice, nuttiness and a hint of cacao but with a lush mouthfeel that makes Casa Dragones tequila feel luxurious. Its sleek, charcoal-colored bottle and turquoise box present the kind of packaging that makes it giftable without wrapping paper.

How Patron Tequila Is Made

All of Patróns tequilas are distilled from 100 percent Weber blue agave in the highlands of Jalisco. The agave piñas are harvested at around eight years of growth and sent to the nearby Hacienda Patrón distillery to begin the process of making tequila.

A rare thing in modern tequila production is the use of the tahona wheel and Patrón is one of the few distilleries that continue to employ this traditional method of crushing the baked agave. They do also use modern roller methods. It is the job of the master distiller to combine the two to make the recipe for Patrón.

This method adds to the flavor we find in Patrón and other tequilas that use it. There is something about the old-fashioned way of extracting the juice that adds depth to the spirit. Even if it is a partial mix, it makes a significant difference.

Patrón Silver Tequila is the base for the Patrón products and is un-aged. Within this same line, Patrón also produces a reposado and añejo tequila.

The brands portfolio continues to grow and includes:

  • The Roca Patrón line , which uses the tahona process exclusively.
  • The luxury-grade Gran Patrón line that includes Platinum, Piedra, and Burdeos.
  • Sweet liqueurs including XO Cafe , Dark Cocoa, Incendio .
  • Citrus liqueurs under the name Patrón Citrónge in lime, mango, and orange flavors.

What Tequilas Does 1800 Offer

The catalogue of 1800 Tequila shines with its favourable variety of products that one can acquire. The 1800 Select Reposado Tequila for example is made entirely from the blue weber agave. After its distillation it is aged for six months in French and American oak casks, which grant it a distinctive taste of figs, vanilla and marzipan. Thus, fans of rich and tasteful tequilas should definitely consider ordering it. Whoever prefers blanco spirit however should think about buying the original 1800 Silver Tequila. Like all of 1800’s tequilas it is made of 100% blue weber agave. The blanco tequila is merely aged for 15 days, thus allowing it to entirely retain its fruity, wild and refreshing character.

Although 1800 Tequila José Cuervo Añejo Reserva shares its manufacturing process with its brethren products, it is aged for three years. Because of this, it will lure your nose with its aromas of candied sugar and honey while leaving beguiling tastes of flowers, honey and wood in your mouth. The tequila is perfectly suitable for being enjoyed either neat or as a supplement in a cocktail.

Can You Get Drunk Off 2 Shots Of Tequila

If youre of average weight, you would probably feel at least SOME small effect from one shot after fifteen minute or so which would increase a bit and then decline over another hour or two. Does Tequila Have To Be 100 Blue Agave

Tequila is made from blue agave, but it does not have to be 100% agave. Many tequilas will advertise themselves as 100% Blue Agave, but the legal requirement is 51%. Distillers are allowed to fill out the rest with a neutral spirit made from cane sugar juice, creating what is known as a mixto tequila.
