It’s hard to find faults in the tequilas of Don Julio. They are readily available, super smooth, and richly flavored with the distinct tequila flavors that make the spirit special. The brand’s aged tequilas are particularly impressive and have a reputation that puts them among the best of the best.

Don Julio Añejo is one you wont want to miss. It instantly improves any cocktail it touches and really shines in a shaken margarita with fresh lime. If you are looking to mix up some of the best tequila drinks you can afford, its the tequila to keep in your bar. It has a sweet, woody aroma with notes of smoke, burnt caramel, and dried fruitsdefinitely a sipping tequila. Añejo is great for making a tequila old-fashioned and substituting the whiskey for añejo tequila, orange bitters for Angostura bitters, and brown sugar for white sugar.

Is Tequila Cheap In Mexico

There are many good tequilas available at a reasonable price in Mexico, and you can expect to pay half as much for different brands as you would in the US. There are good prices, but some items arent as cheap as they are in poorer countries like Guatemala, Nicaragua, or Bolivia, for example. Tequila prices in Mexico are hard to beat, however.

    The Difference In Patron Tequila

Altos Olmeca Reposado or Espolon Reposado? : tequila

The difference in the brands products lies in their creation. It all begins in the Weber Blue Agave harvesting, the plant used as the base ingredient of tequilas.

Since the agave plants ripening happens only every eight years or so, the companys experienced Jimadors were trained to spot the plant with optimal sugar content. Using a sharp tool referred to as Coa, they get right into the piña, or the agave plants core.

These piñas ripen slowly, and it also takes a slow process to prepare them for fermentation. This arduous and meticulous task makes Patron Tequila a premium spirit and one of the worlds most known tequila brands.

The piñas are manually chopped before they are baked using small brick ovens. Once evenly cooked, a roller mill and a 2-ton volcanic stone Tahona wheel crush them to the pulp. They then go through a 3-day fermentation process, after which they are placed in barrels for distillation and ageing.

The brands oldest tequila is the Extra Añejo 10 Años, left to age for 10 years, and the product that undergoes the minimum aging process of two months is Patrón Reposado.

The story does not end when the liquor fermentation begins.

The brand ensures perfection up to the bottles they use, and the cork or crystal stopper. The renowned glass artisans from Mexico mold and measure the bottles used by the brand Lalique, the French crystal master, handles the design of the crystal stopper, while the fine corks used were obtained through sustainable harvesting.

    Whats Worth The Splurge

Margarita Masterclass with Altos Tequila Mixologist Alice Newport

I dont drink only cheap tequila, of course, especially when Im writing about some all-inclusive resort and its an open bar. If you want to know my favorites if money is no object, those would be Don Julio 1942 and Clase Azul in the nice porcelain bottle. The 99,000 Horas from my home state of Guanajuato is quite good too and is a terrific value. Cuervos Reserva de la Familia makes a great gift because the artistic box changes each year and it is consistently good, but I personally would have trouble parting with a hundred bucks to purchase it myself.

Despite what the marketers want you to believe, there is very little correlation between price and quality. This is very clear every time you see the winners from spirits competitions where there was a blind taste test. If you see a bottle at the duty-free shop thats $250, you can bet that $200 of that is usually going to marketing and packaging. Those bottles seldom rank the highest in judging competitions. You can often do just as well by spending far less.

How about you? Have you found any happy cheap tequila surprises on the shelf or at the bar in Mexico?

    Comparing Brands And Their Pricing

So why is a Patron considered a Premium tequila by our standards, while a popular brand like 1800 comes out as a Standard offering? Lets compare some of the brands on our list and look at what might make one more expensive than another.

Patron tequila is often seen in night clubs and is considered an ultra premium brand in the marketplace. Easily identified by its uniquely designed bottle, Patron is one of the higher priced tequilas available on the shelf.

One major reason Patron is seen as a premium brand, and is more expensive, is because of their unique agave handling process. Rather than simply using agave grown on their property, Patron selects from an array of blue agave producers around the region. This ensures that only the perfect blue agave make it into their tequila.

Most would argue that Patron is worth the price as this is one of those tequilas that can be enjoyed sans salt and lime wedge.

On another note, Patron is incredibly environmentally conscious for a major tequila producer. They compost all the agave hearts after use and utilize natural gas to reduce carbon emissions.

Don Julio joins Patron as a Premium tequila on our list. It is also considered a super premium brand by the market, as well.

Jose Cuervo falls into the Standard category by price point, however, that does not mean it is significantly less quality. It has long been one of, if not the best selling tequilas world wide.

How Much Tequila Do You Put In A Margarita

For a single margarita, a 1.5-ounce shot of tequila is standard. It is typically equal to the total volume of the other two ingredients . For instance, the classic margarita formula is three parts tequila, two parts triple sec, and one part lime juice. This is adjusted to taste, pouring more triple sec for a sweeter margarita or extra lime to increase the tartness.

When sizing the margarita up to a pitcher, simply increase the ingredients and keep them in proportion. For example, in the typical half-gallon pitcher, you would combine 3.75 cups tequila, 2.5 cups orange liqueur, and 1.25 cup lime juice. This makes 7.5 cups, leaving room in the pitcher for you to adjust the three ingredients to taste, add a sweetener without increasing the alcohol, or chill it with ice. The margarita is a strong drink, so dilution and small servings are important.
