The Process Of Making Patrn Tequila Is Complex And Environmentally Sustainable
The process of making Patrón tequila is a complex one. It begins in the heart of the Jalisco region in Mexico, where skilled Jimadors work to collect the weber blue agave plants which are used in the production of the tequila. The leaves are stripped away from the agave plants to reveal the heart of the plant, also known as the piña.
The piñas are transferred to the Hacienda Patrón, where tequila is manufactured using a reverse osmosis system. This, in addition to a state-of-the-art compost machine, ensures that the production of Patrón tequila is sustainable and considerate of environmental concerns.
The piñas are then chopped by hand and baked to soften them up, before they are crushed by a volcanic stone tahona wheel and a roller mill. This releases the sweet agave juices which go into flavouring the perfect tequila.
Then the mixture is fermented for three days before being distilled and placed into oak barrels to gently age and for the complex tequila flavours to develop. Once aged, the tequila is poured into handmade glass Patrón bottles which are made from mostly recycled glass. Each glass bottle is hand-numbered to indicate the unique care paid to every single bottle which is produced. It is topped with a cork made in Portugal, where workers cut only the outermost layer of bark from cork trees, so as not to cause environmental damage and to promote sustainability.
Why Is Patron Tequila So Expensive
Patron tequila is expensive due to the combined effects of its reputation, popularity, taste, quality and packaging. The bottle in particular setts Patron apart from other brands of tequila on the market. The tequila is also made from what is considered the best type of agave for spirit distilling, Blue Weber Agave.
- 1 oz lemon/lime juice mix.
- ½ oz smoky mezcal
Shake all ingredients except mezcal. Strain over fresh ice. Float Mezcal over the top. Garnish with candied ginger or a lemon wedge. The original penicillin cocktail calls for blended scotch and an Islay float, but this version swaps in tequila and mezcal to achieve a similar mix of smooth oak flavors and light smoke.
