“I really love Wild Turkey 101, says Drew Johnson, head bartender at The Musket Room. “This is a super affordable, dynamic, and tasty over-proof Kentucky straight bourbon. Crafted using the same high-rye mash bill that legendary distiller Jimmy Russell stubbornly adhered to even during the wheated bourbon craze of the ’80s and ’90s, Wild Turkey’s flagship whiskey boasts assertive notes of cinnamon, maple, old leather, white pepper, and charcoal.

And the unexpectedly smooth bourbon is warming and spicy on its ownno ice needed. I usually like to enjoy this one neat, but I always stand by the opinion that it totally depends on the individual’s preference, Johnson says. If your preference is for cocktails, Wild Turkey’s high alcohol also means it can stand up to powerful flavors, so try it in a Whiskey Smash with seasonal fruit, mix it with a potent ginger beer in a Bourbon Buck, or close out the night with a 101 Manhattan.

What were drinking: Kentucky Owl Takumi Edition

Where its from: Founded in 1879 by C.M. Dedman, the current version of the distillery was relaunched in 2014 after its initial shuttering by Dedmans great, great grandson .

Why were drinking this: Kentucky Owls initial releases were a series of old batches that saw distribution limited to a few hundred or thousand bottles and saw prices for each fetch up to several hundred or even thousands of dollars.

Why so much, besides the limited production and long ages in the first blends? Call it expertise. While the brand uses sourced product , the blending is overseen by John Rhea, a longtime Chief Operating Officer at Four Roses. For those who dont want to hunt down those extremely rare bottles, Kentucky Owl has introduced some more modestly-priced expressions into the market, including The Wiseman and Confiscated.

After releasing a collaboration with Irish Whiskey Bonder Louise McGuane last year called the St. Patricks Edition, Kentucky Owl decided to make the team-ups an annual release. For its second limited-edition bourbon, they worked with Nagahama, the smallest distillery in Japan, headed up by Master Blender Yahisa Yusuke.

Malt whisky and bourbon are very different, obviously, Yusuke told InsideHook during a tasting in late August . But what I like about bourbon, theres a very sweet fruitness, banana type of flavor, and a honey aroma, along with a bit of spiciness.

Bourbon doesn’t need to be made in Kentucky, despite a common misconception, but the Bluegrass State is certainly the source of some of the best examples of the category. Maybe it’s the limestone-filtered water, maybe its the decades of practice, but theres just something about Kentucky that makes for great bourbon.

The state produces a range of styles for every taste, from the classic, vanilla-heavy, full-bodied bottlings, to spicy, high-rye versions, to head-clearing cask-strength sippers.

And there are just so many ways to drink it. “One of my favorite responses on the best way to enjoy bourbon was from Fred Noe of the Jim Beam family,” says Lauren Parton, general manager of Devereaux at the Viceroy Chicago. “He said there’s no wrong way as long as you are enjoying it. Personally, I love whiskey neat or over one rockbut when it’s a hot Chicago day, I throw in some lime juice and simple syrup, and shake it up like a Daiquiri.

No matter how you like to drink it, theres a Kentucky bourbon out there for you. Because it packs a big punch, Noah’s Mill Small Batch Bourbon is our favorite.

How Kentucky Became The Worlds Bourbon Capital

  • Original: Aug 17, 2015

Find out how Kentucky became the center of the worlds production of the distinctive corn-based, barrel-aged whiskey.

Theres no law mandating that bourbon must be produced in Kentucky, although it might seem that way given the states dominance in distilling the distinctive corn-based, barrel-aged whiskey. According to the Kentucky Distillers Association, the Bluegrass State produces and ages approximately 95 percent of the worlds bourbon whiskey.

Another factor that makes Kentucky fertile ground for bourbon production is literally its fertile ground. The influx of settlers who crossed the Appalachian Mountains in the late 1700s soon learned the Kentucky soil was perfect for growing bourbons second main ingredientcorn. Drawn in part by Virginias 1776 Corn Patch and Cabin Rights Act, which offered 400 acres to any settlers who built cabins and planted corn in its then-territory of Kentucky, immigrants from Germany, Scotland and the north of Ireland were among those who arrived with the whiskey-distilling knowledge from their homelands in tow.

The ease of growing corn in Kentucky caused distillers who migrated from the East Coast to change their whiskey recipes. Rye was the plentiful grain in Pennsylvania and Maryland, Russell says, but when distillers came over the Appalachians they found corn the dominant grain so they used corn instead of rye.

Why Is Bourbon Only Made In Kentucky

December 26, 2012, erwin,

Bourbon is a type of whiskey that is considered an American-made product. Much of Bourbon-labeled products are also made in Kentucky making people believe that all Bourbon is from Kentucky. Technically, though, not all Bourbon is made in the state of Kentucky. It just so happens that the majority of Bourbon is produced in this southern state, and its name is also taken from one of its counties named Bourbon.

It is also common for people to see most Bourbon products to have labels that they are made in Kentucky. This is mainly due to two reasons. One reason is that more than 90 percent of Bourbons are made in various parts of Kentucky, and so it is also very likely that people from other parts of the U.S. and the rest of the world will get a Bourbon product from Kentucky rather than from any other U.S. state or anywhere else. Another reason is that only Kentucky has the legal right to label Bourbon products as their own. This is part of making Bourbon an official American product, and this gives relevance to the origins of Bourbon in this southern state. With these instances, whenever people think of Bourbon, they would always associate it with the state of Kentucky in terms of its name, origin, and manufacturing site.

What Is Bourbon And What Separates It From Other Whiskeys

In 1964, the United States Congress recognized Bourbon Whiskey as a distinctively American product. In order to be labeled as bourbon, the whiskey must meet a number of requirements set out in the Federal Standards of Identity for Distilled Spirits.

The regulations to be called bourbon are that it must be made in the United States. It must be made from at least 51% corn, be aged in new oak barrels and be bottled at 80 proof or higher. The process of making bourbon is similar to the process of making other types of whiskey, but there are some key differences.

For example, when making bourbon, the mash is typically cooked at a lower temperature than when making other whiskeys. This allows for more of the sugars in the mash to be converted into alcohol.

Bourbons flavor profile is often described as sweet, spicy and occasionally smoky. This flavor profile is due to the fact that bourbon is typically made with a varying proportion of rye, wheat, malted barley and other grains in the mash. A high percentage of corn, combined with the caramelized sugars of the charred barrel, contribute heavily to the perceived sweetness of the finished product. Bourbon cant have added sugars, flavors or coloring.

“Cask strength bourbon” refers to a whiskey that has not been cut with water before bottling to reduce the ABV, resulting in a proof that may be well over 100. If youre looking for smooth but strong, turn your attention to the hand-dipped wax seal of Makers Marks amped-up brother: Makers Mark Cask Strength. Like the flagship bottling, its full-bodied and packed with caramel and brown sugar flavors. On top of that, it adds the mouthfeel and structure that results from being bottled at barrel strength108 to 114 proof, depending on the barrels.

Dont let the heat stop you from sipping this powerful whiskey straight, but do take advantage of its elevated alcohol levels by mixing it into some cocktails. Try it paired with lemon and honey in a Gold Rush, or enjoy it in a frosty, far-too-drinkable Mint Julep. Its friendly enough for even cask strength neophytes to handle it.
