Heavens Doors origins began in 2015, when American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan trademarked the term bootleg whiskey. Tasting Notes: Heavens Door Straight Rye Whiskey
Vital Stats: 92 proof, blend of three whiskeys, $50-60
Appearance: Similar to the bourbon with pale amber color.
Nose: I think it smells of fresh pecans and oak wood.
Palate: I find it has a fresh taste of hay and oak with a hint of caramel apple. The rye reveals spicy flavors of anise and clove.
Final Thoughts: When comparing to the bourbon, the mouthfeel falls flat. Its like the difference between coffee and tea . Its not as spicy as most ryes.

Celebrity endorsers have played a prominent role in promoting wines and spirits. A few have even taken the next step of launching their own brands. These celebrity brands, among the more than 100 that exist, include Dan Aykroyd/Crystal Head Vodka, AC DC/AC DC Wines and Thunderstruck Tequila, Kenny Chesney/Blue Chair Bay Rum, Ryan Reynolds/Aviation Gin, Drake/Virginia Black, Jay Z/DUSSE Cognac and George Clooney and Rande Gerber/Casamigos Tequila. In 2018, American folk-rock singer and composer Bob Dylan joined the ranks of celebrity liquor brands when he launched Heavens Door. While hardly the first celebrity to do so, he does have the distinction of being one of only two Noble Prize winners to be personally associated with a beverage brand. The other is Winston Churchill, for whom a Pol Roger Champagne is named. Both men won a Noble Prize in literature, Churchill in 1953 and Dylan in 2016.
In 2015, Dylan trademarked the name Bootleg Whiskey. The name referenced a series of recordings that featured previously unreleased material from Dylans long musical career.

Heavens Door Tennessee Bourbon Review
A straight whiskey sourced from Tennessee, the Heavens Door Tennessee Bourbon is an interesting release and a bit of a mystery. It carries a 70% Corn mash bill, which eliminates the usual culprit of George Dickel. True they could have contract distilled with a different mash through GD, but its been aged for 8 years and Dylans company was formed in 2015 .
Searching the internet for mash bills, the only one I found in Tennessee that fits the bill is Davidson Reserve from Pennington Distilling Co. who sports a mash of 70% Corn, 25% Rye and 5% Malted Barley. They were founded in 2011 and with the first release of Heavens Door bourbon being aged for almost seven years and the current being 8 years the timeline does match up barely.
BUT for them to be the source it would mean Pennington had to be sitting on a large cache of early barrels and Dylan & Co. bought them all. There is no mention of the Lincoln County Process so Prichards could also be a suspect, but I couldnt find their mash bill anywhere. Thats a lot of speculation, but the real test is how it smells and tastes, which well get into right now in the Tennessee Bourbon review below.
Heavens Door Is A Young Brand With Old Whiskeys
Whiskey has such a long and rich history in America so much so that many American brands feature the word old in their names. But unlike many legacy whiskey brands that prize their historical origins, Heavens Door is new to the scene and instead embraces its aged whiskeys through special releases. Each of the limited-edition bottles of the brands Bootleg Series is supremely matured, with bottles aged for 13, 15 and even 26 years before their release. Even at the brands tender age of 4, its safe to say that the years distilling and crafting each of its whiskeys has been well spent.

Tomorrow is the 2018 Kentucky Derby, the biggest day in horse-racing and a pretty great excuse to pull out your favorite bourbon for a Mint Julep or twoor even to throw a whole party centered around the most exciting two minutes in sports.
But if thats not your thing, theres plenty more to get excited about this week, with new releases from Makers Mark, Jeffersons, and even Bob Dylan. In fact, the acclaimed folk musician and Nobel Prize winner is rolling out a brand new line of bourbon, whiskey, and rye called Heavens Door. The bottles feature ironwork designs Dylan crafted himself. While the whiskeys are currently sourced, there are plans to open a distillery for Heavens Door in Nashville in 2019. This project has legs: one of the founding partners of Angels Envy is backing it. The bourbon and whiskey will sell for $50, while the rye is $80.
Meanwhile, Makers Mark is offering a new, very limited Private Select bourbon, finished in casks made with a unique stave that imparts butterscotch and honey flavors. Bottled at barrel proof, Makers Mark Seared Bu 1-3 is only available at the distillery and select retailers in Kentucky, and will be sold in 375-ml. bottles for $40.
Heavens Door Tennessee Bourbon Review: Overall And Score
It comes through a bit on the light side, but its definitely not watery or weak. The Aroma is a bit reminiscent of George Dickel, but not dead on, its mostly that soft musty corn and vanilla essence that gets me thinking maybe Palate is not as complex as the aroma but its still lovely and pulls in a bit more of that dried corn profile Finish is soft and fades out oaky.
The aroma is the best part of this whiskey hands down, the palate aint shabby, but the aroma of the Heavens Door Tennessee Bourbon is so much more enticing and interesting. I get a suggestion of Dickel in here, but its not fully there. Sipping on some Dickel 12 and Dickel 08 as side-by-side references, the similarities to the house style are undeniable but so are the differences.
True, the differences could be due to barrel selection, but when you take into consideration the 70% corn mash bill its likely its not them. Either way, its a fun tasty whiskey and Im going to enjoy sharing and sipping through this bottle.

Heavens Door Will Soon Have Roots In Nashville
Heavens Door whiskey is currently sourced from several different producers in the Midwest, but the brand has always planned to one day operate from its own distillery. Heavens Door sought locations in Nashville, Tenn., home of one of Americas favorite spirits and the location where Dylan recorded three of his albums. In 2019, the brand announced plans to renovate a 160-year-old church located on Elm Street to house its new distillery and brand center.
Tasting Notes: Heavens Door Tennessee Bourbon

Appearance: Pale amber
Nose: The bourbon has a strong, warm, sweet yet spicy aroma with hints of cherry and sourdough. I found it has an aroma of warm baked bread.
Palate: It has a full, thick mouthfeel. It has the added fullness of butterscotch and honey. Its full of cinnamon, cherry, and brown sugar notes as youd expect from a bourbon. Plus, the higher rye content lends to a spicy peppery taste.
Final Thoughts: Although its Tennessee whiskey, its made Kentucky style without the Lincoln County charcoal filtering process. This bourbon has a wonderfully thick mouthfeel and warm delightful spices. Its my preferred whiskey of the trio, the flavors keep coming and coming.

Three Is Heavens Doors Lucky Number
Currently, Heavens Door offers three main expressions: Heavens Door Straight Bourbon, Heavens Door Double Barrel, and Heavens Door Straight Rye. Also known as Tennessee bourbon, the Straight Bourbon expression is aged seven years in American oak, which results in a taste that has distinct notes of both caramelized pecans and stone fruits. The double barrel whiskey is a blend of three whiskeys aged for six years separately and then aged together for an additional year in American oak. Thirdly, there is the straight, hand-toasted rye expression aged in French oak cigar barrels for a spirit that has notes of orange peel spiced with coriander.

The eighth release in Bardstowns Discovery series is an international blend that brings together bourbon, rye, and corn whisky. The blend is 66% 12 year old Kentucky bourbon, 17% 7 year old Indiana 51% rye, 11% 12 year old corn whisky from Canada, and 6% Indiana rye made from a 95% rye mash. The whiskey was matured with a combination of five barrel stave types including French Oak, Rioja, and charred staves. Along with the release of #8, Bardstown has teased the ninth entry in the Discovery series. That whiskey, coming in September, will introduce a new source for Bardstowns blended whiskies: Georgia. In addition to Georgia craft bourbon, #9 will also include 17 year old Tennessee whiskey, Kentucky bourbon, and Canadian whisky.

Half of the distillerys Discovery series have scored 91 points or higher in our Buying Guide, with the first, second, and fourth releases receiving 94 points each. The 76-year-old singer and Nobel laureate has teamed up with liquor entrepreneur Marc Bushala, who was also the co-founder of Kentucky Straight Bourbon Angels Envy, to release his own line of whiskies, set to be released in May.
The new company has been named Heavens Door Spirits, a reference to Dylans 1973 song Knocking on Heavens Door, and will produce a Bourbon, double barrel whiskey and a straight rye whiskey at a distillery house inside a deconsecrated church in Tennessee.
According to the Heavens Door website, the whiskies will be finished in oak barrels from Vosges, France, air-dried for 3 years, and each bottle will feature Dylans distinctive welded iron gates created in his metalworking studio Black Buffalo Ironworks.
You dont always find inspiration, the singer said in a release announcing the venture. Sometimes it finds you. We wanted to create a collection of American whiskeys that would each tell a story.
The partnership came about after Bushala noticed that Dylan has filed a trademark application of bootleg whiskey, and contacted the singer to make his pitch, and the rest soon followed.
Speaking to The Guardian, Bushala defended the singer against claims that the move amounted to selling out, with some branding the project a vanity project.
Dylans signature will appear on the reverse of the label, meaning it will only become visible once its been opened.
And thats great because its authentic for Dylan and authentic for the brand.
