Irish Whiskeys Popularity Is New

Although the popularity of Irish whiskey is exploding of late, the countrys distillers first experienced such a boom over a century ago. During that period, the United States was flooded with Irish whiskey produced from over 100 Irish distilleries on the Emerald Isle.

At its peak, Irish whiskey was the biggest in America. But the industry became decimated, no thanks to trade wars with Britain as well as Prohibition in the United States, and two World Wars.

But things have changed exceptionally over the last twenty years. Irish whiskey is back and better!

Barley Is Like Our Grape

Jameson sources their barley from Southern Ireland, all within 50 or so miles or so from the Midleton site. They work with around 200 smaller farmers, and source the two-row spring barley from plots of land anywhere from 15 to 700 acres. These farmers plant the barley in mid March or early April, for a late summer harvest in August and September.

Jameson also uses a mix of malted and unmalted barley in their booze in a single pot still. It cant be called a single malt, because single malt is a term used to refer to liquids made using only malted barley. But it gets the distinction of single pot because its all made in a pot still under one roof in Midleton. ODonovan told us they prefer a mix of malted and unmalted barley because the green barley makes the whiskey a little spicy, a little grainy, and a little barley-er. Its a method theyve used for over 200 years, and theyre one of the few companies left on the planet that still does it.

On the other side of the barley is maize, a fancy word for corn. According to ODonovan, because Irelands cooler, grey skied climate cant support sun-hungry corn crops, the distillery has to get corn from Spains sun-rich Basque Country.

Color: Copperish Amber.

On the nose: Intense, with lots of ripe tropical fruits. I get banana walnut bread, rum raisin chocolate, toffee, lemon, honey, pineapple, and overripe melon. After it is exposed to air for a while, a light touch of perfumy notes and earl grey comes through.

In the mouth: A liquid dessert! It has a creamy, oily mouthfeel. That chocolate note carries on to the palate. Caramel, hazelnut chocolate, citrus, macadamia-like milky nuttiness, and dark fruits. I can taste the wood influence a bit of oakiness and leather but they are well-integrated. A beautiful long finish, with lingering spiciness accompanied by sweetness. Theres a tad of bitterness near the very end. Overall, its full-bodied and well balanced.

Creation Of The Irish Distillers Group

In 1966 John Jameson merged with Cork Distillers and John Powers to form the Irish Distillers Group. In 1976, the Dublin whiskey distilleries of Jameson in Bow Street and in John’s Lane were closed following the opening of a New Midleton Distillery by Irish Distillers outside Cork. The Midleton Distillery now produces much of the Irish whiskey sold in Ireland under the Jameson, Midleton, Powers, Redbreast, Spot and Paddy labels. The new facility adjoins the Old Midleton Distillery, the original home of the Paddy label, which is now home to the Jameson Experience Visitor Centre and the Irish Whiskey Academy. The Jameson brand was acquired by the French drinks conglomerate Pernod Ricard in 1988 when it bought Irish Distillers.

The old Jameson Distillery in Bow Street near Smithfield in Dublin now serves as a museum which offers tours and tastings. The distillery, which is historical in nature and no longer produces whiskey on site, went through a $12.6 million renovation that was concluded in March 2016, and is now a focal part of Ireland’s strategy to raise the number of whiskey tourists, which stood at 600,000 in 2017. Bow Street also now has a fully functioning Maturation Warehouse within its walls since the 2016 renovation. It is here that Jameson 18 Bow Street is finished before being bottled at Cask Strength.
