Is It Cheaper To Buy Tequila In Mexico

In Mexico that includes good tequila for a good price. For a whole lot of brands, you can expect to pay half what you would in the USA. So prices are good, but some items are not as cheap as in poorer countries like Guatemala, Nicaragua, or Bolivia, for instance. Nobody beats the Mexican prices for tequila though.

Where To Buy Tequila In The Usa

Herradura Anejo Tequila

Thanks to its geographical and cultural proximity, tequila can be easily found in most liquor and convenience stores throughout the USA.

Indeed, the USA represents Mexicos first importer of tequila, having brought over 204 million litres of it in 2019! For context, Germany is Mexicos second-biggest importer, which only consumed just over 5 million litres in the same year.

However, most easily-available tequila is rarely exceptional in quality or in value. In most cases, its bottom-shelf booze and rarely 100% blue agave. In fact, its easy to accidentally buy sub-part mixto tequila, which consists of a minimum 51% blue agave and other sugars.

Nevertheless, the internet is an excellent resource, especially when it comes to liquor. There are a number of online retailers that specialise in high-quality alcohol while still offering good value for money.

We were particularly impressed by Reserve Bar, which features a vast selection of tequila from different brands. Furthermore, Reserve Bar has partnered with a few producers in order to provide exclusives and fair pricing.

Meanwhile, Drizly works in partnership with local liquor stores. Therefore, it tends to have a very healthy and diverse range of products. The benefit of its service is that you can discover whats locally available to you and have it delivered within an hour.

Its Produced On Holy Grounds

Holy grounds by real-estate association, anyway: Herradura distillery was established in 1870 by Félix López , but a distillery had been operating there for longer. In the early 1800s, recently ordained Roman Catholic priest Jose Feliciano de la Trinidad Romo Escobedo bought the hacienda, where mezcal was already in production, and decided to continue distilling spirits . In fact, the place was briefly named the Hacienda del Padre, or Priest House. Not quite the name wed give a party spot but there it is.

Tequila Must Be 100% Agave: True

In addition to being produced in specific regions of Mexico, tequila must be 100% agave blue agave, to be exact. And something not many people know is that Mexicos agave landscape is recognized as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.Differences in the flavor come from the aging process, from blanco to extra añejo . The aging process adds depth and complexity to the spirit.

Tequila Is Just For Shots: False

Tequila shots, with salt and a lime wedge, are part of our collective drinking unconscious. So much so, it feels like theres no other way to enjoy tequila. But expert bartenders say that you should allow the flavors of your tequila to open up, like a fine wine or scotch. Its much more common in Mexico to sip your tequila slowly the shot with lime and salt is primarily an American practice.

Its Made Near The Base Of Tequila Volcano

Tequila Herradura Double Barrel Reposado

Unless its carved out of ice and sitting at the center of the bar at your BFFs bachelorette party, Tequila Volcano refers to an actual volcano in Jalisco . The agave for Herradura tequila grows around the base of the volcano, or the lowlands, and we can thank that volcano for the rich, agave-friendly soil, and then maybe pour one out at its base just in case, since the last eruption was 200,000 years ago and we want to keep things nice and quiet in Jalisco.

Its Herradura And El Jimador Ahem

Officially speaking, the hacienda and distillery that produce Herradura have been in operation for 150 years. Herradura Tequila was first registered in Mexico in 1928 and is now the eighth best-selling tequila in the world. El Jimador was born in 1994, like a much younger sibling. Brown-Forman is currently working on bridging the divide between authentic tequila production and millennial urbanites, somewhat removed from the lowlands of Jalisco. A recent marketing campaign included some savvy PR rebranding and repackaging of El Jimador in bottles with pronounced shoulders and a stronger silhouette, which also sounds suspiciously like promises our Pilates teacher made us.

Herradura Invented The Reposado And Extra Aejo Tequila Categories

Another reason to pour one out: Gabriela de la Peña introduced reposado, which effectively bridged the gap between blanco and añejo. She also introduced extra añejo, a category that dared to even approach the gap between tequila and brown spirits like bourbon, rum, and Scotch. Reposado Herradura came out in 1974. Reposado is aged between 60 and 364 days, and in the case of Herradura that aging happens in white oak. And while the brown spirits-proximate extra añejo category wasnt introduced by Mexicos Tequila Regulatory Council until 2006, Herradura had actually introduced its Extra Añejo Selección Suprema all the way back in 1995.

Its Ownership Roster Reads Like A Soap Opera Cast

The hacienda where Herradura is made was first owned by a priest, then the three Zalazar sisters who ran it for about eight years until they were forced to trade it to a worker in lieu of unpaid wages. Then that worker, Félix López, went on to turn the distillery back into a successful property, which was eventually taken over by his son, then his cousin, then a game-changing powerful female leader , then a massively powerful U.S. corporation . All of which makes Herradura sound like the important factory trading hands in a soap opera.

How Much Does Tequila Cost

Da Happy Hour w/ CaliSlim & West Maccin – Herradura Double Barrel Reposado **Crafted For Emilio’s**

As there are lots of different types of tequila, prices can be surprisingly sporadic. However, its not impossible to have an idea of what budget youll need when buying some.

Ignoring mixto and flavoured tequila, blanco and plata 100% blue agave tequila can be as low as just under $30. However, premium brands may retail it for as high as $60.

Given that ageing tequila requires both time and additional labour, it can be more expensive. That being said, some resposado expressions may go as low as $30 as well.

Nevertheless, its reasonable to expect that high-quality tequila that has been aged for multiple years can fetch for similar prices to Scotch whisky and cognac. Therefore, dont be surprised when you see some good bottles of extra añejo for over $150.

Tequila Is Nothing More Than Cactus Juice: False

While the agave plant has pointy needles and sharp leaves, its really more of a succulent than a cactus. Fun fact: Agaves are more closely related to the Joshua Tree than that prickly desert dweller we know so well. True tequila must be 100% agave, and the best brands harvest the agave when its at least a decade old.

Its The Only Remaining Working Hacienda

Hacienda San Jose del Refugio is the last tequila-producing hacienda on the planet. So, next question, what is a hacienda? The roots of a hacienda arent super wholesome first showing up in the early 16th century, haciendas were estates doled out to Spanish noblemen for farming or ranching, similar to a plantation. Mexico mostly abolished its hacienda system in the early 20th century with the introduction of the communal ejido system . But the Hacienda San Jose del Refugio persists for a reason: Everything for its tequila is made and produced in-house, and the self-sufficient hacienda system kind of works for them.

Herradura Also Had The Worlds First Female Master Tequila Distiller

Maria Teresa Lara Lopez began working at Herradura in 1987 in the lab . In 2009 she was named master distiller, finally retiring in 2017 like de la Peña, giving decades to the betterment of tequila, including her Directo de Alambique tequila, which goes right from the distilling tank to the bottle without touching oak, at 55 percent ABV no less an intentionally pronounced expression of agave and tequilas terroir.

Currently, Teremana Blanco retails for $30 and a barrel-rested Reposado sells for $33. The company launched in March. They Use 100 Percent Blue Weber Agave Not All Tequilas Do

Tequila can and should be made with 100 percent Blue Weber agave. That means tequila producers wait roughly eight to 10 years for this massive, gorgeous, only slightly threatening-looking succulent to mature before really strong, patient people hack it into submission, extracting the piña, which looks like a monstrous pineapple. Not all tequilas go full agave, however mixto tequilas are made with some agave, with the rest of the alcohol provided by a cheaper, often harsher, neutral spirit .

They Used The Tahona Process For A Century

The tahona process is the earliest way tequila was produced in bulk. But considering it involves steadfast mules dragging a massive circular stone in endless Sisyphean circles around a pit to crush cooked agave, its not really economically viable for most distilleries. It is, however, such an important innovation in the history of commercial tequila production that Herradura preserves its original tahona stone and even throws the occasional #tbt out there for the world to pay its respects. All good news if and when machines break down and we still need booze .

Casa Dragones Aejo Barrel Blend

  • Country of Origin: Mexico
  • Age: Añejo
  • Casking: French & American Oak

Casa Dragones prides itself in its artisanal approach where it only produces tequila in small 500-case batches. Its Añejo barrel blend is produced by blending tequila that has been aged separately in new 100% Quercus Sessile French oak and new American oak.

Both barrels have been lightly bousiné or toasted, which helps in offering greater complexity by reducing the woods influence. The result is a floral and fruity nose with rich macadamia and spicy nutmeg flavour that finishes on a crescendo of cacao and pepper.

Don Julio Reposado Double Cask

Tequila Corner Thursday/ Herradura Reposado Reserva and Seleccion Suprema
  • Country of Origin: Mexico
  • Region: Atotonilco El Alto, Jalisco
  • Age: Reposado
  • Casking: American & Ex-Scotch Whisky Oak
  • ABV: 40%

Since Don Julio launched its limited-edition double cask range, it has produced some fascinating combinations. On this occasion, it consists of finishing tequila that was aged in American white oak barrels with ex-Scotch whisky casks that were first used by Buchanan.

As a result, it offers deep flavours of chocolate malt with hints of peat while revealing tropical fruit and spices. Overall, an original and tantalising tequila to try!

Tequila Is The Intellectual Property Of Mexico: True

In fact, its illegal for other countries besides Mexico to sell tequila. In 1974, the Mexican government declared the term tequila the intellectual property of Mexico. Mexican law requires tequila to be produced only in certain regions of the country. Tequila sold outside Mexico is technically a mezcal or a mixto.

Whats The Proper Way To Taste Tequila

Shooting tequila with lime and salt is a hard habit to break. But in truth, thats no way to appreciate this complex and nuanced spirit. To drink tequila like a real connoisseur, follow these simple guidelines.

  • After pouring about 1 ounce of tequila in a brandy snifter, hold the snifter at the base . Appreciate the color of the tequila by raising the snifter to eye level.
  • Swirl the tequila gently to the left for about 1 minute. Does the tequila cling to the side of the glass before falling slowly to form whats called the string of pearls effect?
  • After taking a small sip, keep the tequila between your lips and tip of your tongue for about 10 seconds. Swish the tequila around the inside of your mouth before swallowing. Let the flavors come to you.

Whats most important is to find out which tequila you like best. That way, whether you mix tequila into a margarita or drink it straight, youll always be satisfied. When sampling tequila, pay attention to what kind of tequila youre trying. Here are the primary kinds of tequila:
