What Is Bombay Sapphire Gin Made From

Bombay Sapphire was first released in 1987 but was inspired by a recipe from 1761. Like most gin, it is a neutral grain spirit that is triple distilled and infused with botanicals. How Bombay uses the botanicals is unique. Instead of steeping the flavoring ingredients in the alcohol, the distillery uses a vapor infusion extraction.

The distillery originally employed two Carterhead stills from the 1830s and added two copper pot stills when production increased. Above the distillate, copper baskets hold the proprietary blend of botanicals. As the alcohol heats up and evaporates, the steam hits the botanicals, infusing it with flavor before it condenses back into a liquid that is cut to bottling strength. This approach is designed to give the gin a more delicate flavor.

Bombay was one of the first gin brands to celebrate their botanicals with full disclosure. Though the actual recipe is a well-kept secret entrusted to their “master of botanicals,” Ivano Tonutti, they do reveal what the ingredient list includes. It is an international affair that includes Italian juniper berries and orris root, Spanish almonds and lemon peels, grains of paradise from West Africa, Chinese licorice, cassia bark from Indo-China, angelica from Saxony, Moroccan coriander, and cubeb berries from Java. The botanicals are nicely balanced and add a crispness to the spirit.

In 2014, Bombay Sapphire opened a new distillery just outside of London, England. It is open to the public for tours and events.

The company rolled out a 47 percent ABV, spice-jacked, vermouth-barrel-aged Bombay Amber. It also added lemongrass and Vietnamese peppercorns to its blend in its newly released Bombay East. And in 2016, it added Italian Bergamot and floral Ecuadorian ambrette seeds to Bombay Sapphire to create the Star of Bombay, a slow single batch gin intended exclusively for a globe-hopping international market.

Everything about Nolets Reserve gin is superior. The entire goal of the distillery is to create the very best, from the exclusive high quality, invaluable ingredients, to the tiny production and minuscule allocation.

This modern gin is distilled at a higher ABV than usual, too, at 52.3% compared to a standard of between 40-48%. Despite the number, its an easy-to-drink gin thats smooth and round throughout. Its high price point comes mostly from its use of saffron, which is more expensive per ounce than gold and isnt used sparingly in Nolets distillation process.

The saffron also gives Nolets Reserve its slightly tinted amber colouring and warm, deep spice flavour. Unsurprisingly, its a gin with plenty of depth, balancing bitter notes like verbena with florals like Turkish rose and lavender.

Only a few hundred bottles of Nolets are produced each year, overseen by master distiller Carolus Nolet Sr. Each bottle is also personally numbered and signed by the master distiller before its sold. Its a wonderful, complex gin created to be sipped.

In 1957, a New York based lawyer who had learnt about the drinks industry whilst working for Seagrams, decided there was an opportunity for a new gin brand in America. Allan Subin lived on Madison Avenue and socialised with successful Mad Men, bankers, lawyers and entrepreneurs. He was married to an Englishwoman so was also enamoured with all things British. With these influences and his peers tastes in mind, he sought to create a gin brand that embodied 1920s elegance.

After some research he concluded that Greenalls were the people to make his gin and that their 1761 recipe and vapour infusion process was just what he was looking for, but with the stipulation that grain spirit was used as per the original recipe, not molasses spirit as used by Greenalls at the time.

Bombay and the days of the Raj were the inspiration for his gins name with Queen Victoria, the epitome of Englishness, as the new brands icon. Interestingly, the use of a British monarch for branding purposes had been prohibited in 1934, but as Subins gin was aimed at the American market the rule did not apply.

With the COVID 19 isolation ongoing and the onset of spring, I have some more time in the afternoon and good weather to enjoy on my porch. It is the perfect combination for one of my favourite cocktails, a Gibson cocktail.

Bombay Sapphire Gin has been my go to gin for this cocktail. When I was in the liquor store, I noticed a different variety of Bombay Sapphire Gin, Bombay Sapphire Gin East. It advertises on its label that it has more lemongrass and pepper notes. It was only a couple of dollars more than the Bombay Sapphire so I decided to give it a try.

I started by sipping it neat. There was definitely some more flavours. While it still had the great balance of Bombay Sapphire, it also had just a touch more pepper notes that made it seem a bit more sharp. It was quite a pleasant difference. However, I dont drink gin neat. How would it be in my Gibson cocktail?

So, I mixed it with some and made a Gibson cocktail. I was pleased to find that the sharper taste added a nice note to my cocktail. It was still a great gin taste that went wonderfully in the cocktail but the sharper pepper notes made a surprisingly better cocktail. It just seemed brighter and tastier. I prefer the East variety and will happily spend the extra couple of dollars

The Verdict

Sometimes it pays off to try something new. The difference between the Bombay Sapphire East and the Bombay Sapphire gin isnt huge but it is noticeable and very enjoyable!
