Diageo To Buy Ryan Reynolds
Diageo is paying up to $610 million for Aviation American Gin, co-owned by Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds, and a clutch of other spirits brands, adding to a gin portfolio that already includes Tanqueray and Gordon’s.
Diageo isn’t new to acquiring brands linked to Hollywood celebrities, having in 2017 paid $1 billion to acquire the super-premium tequila brand Casamigos co-founded by “Ocean’s Eleven” star George Clooney.
It also teamed up with music producer and rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs to sell Ciroc vodka in 2007.
Reynolds acquired an unspecified minority stake in Aviation Gin in 2018, since then the brand had thrived, Diageo, the world’s largest spirits maker, said on Monday. It said Reynolds would retain his interest in Aviation American Gin.
The deal comes at a time when consumption of gin has been rising in the United States. According to the Distilled Spirits Council, distillers sold nearly 10 million nine-liter cases of gin in the United States in 2019, generating $918 million in revenue, a 3% rise over 2018.
Most of this growth was driven by the super-premium gin category where bottles cost $25 and upwards.
Aviation American Gin, which retails for $27 per 750 milliliters, is the second-largest super-premium gin brand in the United States, growing volumes at over 100% in 2019 and contributed 40% of super-premium gin category growth in the country, Diageo said, citing industry tracker IWSR.
It also took a 1.3 billion pound charge on some slow-selling brands.

Aviation Gin is owned by Davos Brands and Reynolds, who Diageo said will maintain “an ongoing ownership interest.” The gin will join Diageo’s lineup of gin brands including Tanqueray, as well as other spirits such as Smirnoff vodka and Johnnie Walker Scotch whisky.
The spirits maker generated online buzz last year after the “Deadpool” star tweeted an ad for the drink poking fun at a Peloton commercial much criticized as promoting negative body images and unhealthy marital dynamics. The Aviation promo features the actress from the original Pelaton ad staring blankly into the distance as she is consoled over martinis at a bar by a couple of friends. Says one friend, “You’re safe here.” Reynolds tweeted the ad with the line, “Exercise bike not included.”
Emerging gin brands have grown in popularity, according to trade publication The Drinks Business, which noted last year that more than 400 new gins have hit the market since 2016. Most of those newcomers are premium gins like Aviation, which consumers are using in cocktails such as negronis, martinis and gin and tonics.

It seems that more and more celebrities are diversifying their portfolios by getting into the liquor and wine industry, and given that Ryan Reynolds just sold his Aviation American Gin brand as part of a $610 million deal its easy to see the appeal.
Diageothe worlds largest spirits and beers producerhas acquired the gin brand co-owned by the actor in a deal that could be worth up to $610 million. As part of the deal, Diageo will pay $335 million upfront with an additional $275 million possible payday depending on Aviations performance over the next 10 years.
In 2018, Reynolds purchased a stake in the gin brand, founded in 2006, and as part of this new deal will retain an ongoing ownership stake. In addition to Aviation Gin, Diageo also acquired Astral Tequila, Sombra Mezcal and TYKU Sake from the brands parent company Davos Brands LLC.
But Reynolds isnt just interested in being the king of gin, hes working on building a small business empire outside of alcohol and acting. In 2019, the actor purchased an ownership stake in Mint Mobile, an affordable direct-to-consumer cell phone carrier, and in July 2020 he joined the board of Match Group, the company that owns Match.com and Tinder.
