There are many well-known brands that make the classic London dry-style of gin, but Beefeater is one of the best and most ubiquitous. While London dry gin does not have to actually be made in London , it does need to meet other requirements that govern the distillation process. In short, these gins need to be made from pure grain spirit, with no flavor or artificial additives added after distillation.

Beefeaters nine-botanical recipe includes juniper, Seville orange, orris, and lemon peel, creating an easy-sipping gin that works well in any cocktail.

    Taaka London Dry Gin

Located within the grounds of one of Scotlands most prestigious grain whisky distilleries lies the Hendricks Gin Palace. Every drop of Hendricks consumed around the world has flowed through the stills contained within the distillery under the watchful eye of Master Distiller, Miss Lesley Gracie.

The Hendricks distillery has a rather unusual assemblage of traditional Bennett Style and rarer Carterhead style distillation. The leaders of this peculiar ensemble are a contrasting pair of antique copper stills purchased at auction in London by Charles Gordon in 1966 . The two forms of distillation produce different styles of gin which are then blended together before being finally consummated with the essences of Rose and Cucumber.

The Gin Palace site boasts a state of the art laboratory where a technical team work on continuous innovation and uphold consistency through botanical analysis.

The Hendricks Gin Palace is not open to the public for visits.

    Bathtub Gin

The Bathtub Gin looks like it came out of a world history book. The bottle is wrapped in brown paper lined with historic fonts and sealed with twine. The gin has strong notes of cinnamon and cardamom that your palate may find offensive, and for about $50 in price per 750ml bottle, we think youre better off with Hendricks rose and cucumber aroma instead.

    Tanqueray No. Ten

Just like Hendricks, the Tanqueray No. Ten also uses flowers in its recipe jasmine petals, in its case. The result is a fragrant and citrus-forward spirit and is also an excellent choice for sipping neat. In the United States, prices of No. Ten bottles start at roughly $36 in stores.

    Plymouth English Gin

Because the Plymouth English Gin is more juniper-forward, gin idealists might enjoy this brand more. It wholeheartedly embraces the classic juniper notes and lets other botanicals such as coriander, pepper, and orris root tastefully complement it. This brand also has links to the Royal Navy. A bottle of Plymouth Gin starts at approximately $26 in price.

A Brief Background On Hendricks Gin

The name Hendricks has Scottish roots. It came from Hendrick, the Grants family gardener . One of Williams grandmothers, the oldest member of the Grant family, chose the name of the family gardener for the gin.

While the name Hendrick came from family, the signature formula of the gin is the brainchild of Lesley Gracey, the brands master distiller . It took 11 years for this to come about, as Lesley started working on the formula for the business in 1988.

The business fondly refers to Lesley as part alchemical genius, part liquid poet, and part scientist, and quirkily enough, she had always been fascinated with different botanicals at a young age. She would brew teas using different seeds, roots, and herbs and would serve them to her family at the age of four.

    Tanqueray London Dry Gin

    Top Shelf Reviews: (Review) Hendrick

There is a beautiful gin inside this distinct green bottle with its red wax seal. Tanqueray’s crisp, dry style is the benchmark for a London dry gin without any citrus in the botanicals. It is a standard to which all other gins are compared and contrasted and also sells for a reasonable price.

Tanqueray London Dry Gin is bottled at a slightly higher strength than most gin, which makes the flavor profile beautifully bold. Depending on the market it’s sold in, you’ll find it bottled from 43.1 percent to 47.3 percent ABV . You can mix this gin into any cocktail and it won’t get lost. It is the perfect choice for mixing a balanced drink.

Distilled since the 1870s, Tanqueray is now produced at Camron Bridge in Edinburgh, Scotland, one of Europe’s largest distilleries. What’s most amazing is that this four times distilled gin uses just four botanicals: juniper, coriander seed, angelica root, and licorice.

How Did You Get Into Being An Evangelist Or Alcohol Brand Ambassador

My interest in craft spirits began during my final year in university. I spent a good amount of time writing my thesis in a bar and eavesdropping on conversations that the bartenders were having. I soon caught on to the fact that almost every cocktail that was served and every bottle on the back shelf had its own unique story attached to it.

At that point I was majoring in English Literature and taking a minor in Creative Writing so naturally stories and storytelling were things that drew me in like a moth to a flame. Coupled with my existing interest in food and flavour discovery, delving into the realm of spirits was essentially inevitable.

I decided to properly pursue this combined fascination of stories and spirits by starting my first full-time job out of university at a cocktail bar called 28 HongKong Street back in 2015. Across the 3.5 years that I spent working at 28HKS Id gotten to know the various brand ambassadors from William Grant & Sons as they would come in for cocktails or to share the stories behind the spirits that I now get to work around every day.

When I heard that the role for the Hendricks brand ambassador had opened up I thought that perhaps Id fit the bill. Love for all things odd and peculiar? Check. Waxes lyrical about spirits all day? Check. Likes cucumbers? Check.

So I spoke to one of the other ambassadors and the next thing you know, here I am, three years in and still joyfully spreading the gospel of gin and cucumbers.

Monkey 4: Best Gin For The Money

Hailing from the Black Forest of Germany, Monkey 47 uses a whopping 47 botanicals in its gin. Its a brand thats very much convinced that bigger is better when it comes to flavour combinations and uses everything from almonds and mint to allspice and honey pomelo in its distillery process. Amongst the botanicals are also six different types of pepper.

Its secret weapon for its unique flavour profile comes from the lingonberries added, taken from the Black Forest. Its a brand that enjoys its cult status, thanks to its complex makeup.

The vast number of botanicals makes this a very interesting gin to sample. It offers tastes that ebb and flow the more you sip, as each of the botanicals comes to light. Citrus is one of the most prominent flavours, followed by a bouquet of fruits and florals.

Its complexity works to its advantage, and Monkey 47 is definitely a crowd pleaser. Try it neat or enjoy it as the perfect companion in a G& T.
