Vodka Cocktails You Need To Try
Vodka has been America’s most popular spirit since 1976 for a reason: It’s incredibly versatile. Clear, colorless, odorless, and flavorless, vodka pairs well with just about any flavor profile you can think of, making it an essential bottle to have on hand if you’re entertaining at home. That neutrality also means it also takes well to infusions with ingredients like citrus fruits, herbs, and even jalapeño peppers. We’ve collected our favorite vodka cocktails here, from bartenders and chefs around the country. Some, like the Vodka Gimlet, are easy to make, requiring only vodka and lime cordial. Others, like the East Jaffa Mule, are perfect for showing off your mixology skills. But there’s something for almost everyone here, from Martinis to Bloody Marys to Mules. Stock up your cabinet with your favorite vodka and start mixing.

Vodka is a neutral spirit that is usually not aged and can be made from grains, potatoes, sugars, and fruits that are fermented to produce alcohol. Home brewers should take extreme caution during the distilling process to discard the methanol, which can be fatal if consumed. Distilling alcohol at home is illegal in some places, like Australia and the U.S. Other countries may require you to register your still or obtain a license to distill alcohol, such as in New Zealand and the Czech Republic.XResearch source Be sure to check your local regulations before beginning this process.

What Is The Best Brand Of Vodka To Buy
I know it can be tempting to buy the cheapest bottle possible, but I highly encourage you not to. While vodka cocktails have mixers and add-ins that will add to the flavor of the drink, the liquor itself is still a very important part of the recipe.
A cheaper vodka is much less smooth and will add more of the unpleasant alcohol taste, whereas a more mid-range version creates a smooth drink that doesnt have any bitterness to it.
The good news is, you dont have to spend a lot of cash to get a nice vodka. Many bottles are under $20 and will last you a while. I have tried several different brands and my favorites are Titos, Grey Goose, and Boyd & Blair, but experiment and see which you prefer.

Depending On Your Mash Ingredients Decide Whether You Need To Use Additional Enzymes
Food-grade amylase enzyme powder can be purchased from a homebrew shop and added to the mash to convert the starch into fermentable sugars, if youre using something like potatoes, for example. Use the recommended amount for the amount of starch to be broken down. There is no need to use malted, enzyme-rich grains such as malted barley or wheat when using enzyme powder.
For enzymes to be able to break down starches, even the starches of malted, enzyme-rich grain, the starches must first be gelatinized.
Flaked grains are often already gelatinized. Un-gelatinized ingredients such as potatoes and unrolled or malted grains are heated in water to the gelatinization temperature of the particular starch that is used. Potatoes usually gelatinize at about 150° F , while barley and wheat gelatinize at about the same temperature. Theoretically a potato mash should only need to be heated to 150° F , anything over 165° will destroy all the enzymes. If a low temperature is used with potatoes, the potatoes should be finely shredded before adding them to the water.
What You Need To Know About The Drink
But, before going to that, lets understand, what is the real stir about Vodka? No doubt, its a medieval drink, has a heritage of its own, but what is it? The drink is usually an indispensable part of any cocktails out there. So, whenever we hit the bar, the encounter with a pint of Vodka is unsurpassable. But, have you ever taken any particular interest in it? Lets give this old buddy of ours a little attention.
United States Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau has come up with a dictionary type definition of Vodka whereby it states that this drink is primarily a white or neutral spirit that is distilled or may be subject to treatment after distillation. Charcoal can help in this process. The companies should do this so that it would not contain any distinctive aroma, character or taste even color. We can very well say this is our own spirited or alcoholic water enticing us with its versatility.
It is ethanol mixed water until the thing reaches this 80 percent mark. However, you can also get flavored vodkas. But the procedures for making them are much different.

Titos Handmade Vodka: First Impressions From A Liquor Snob
Upon first glance, Titos Handmade Vodka appears to be keeping it real. Despite its supposed quality and its ever increasing reputation, the bottle is kept extremely simple and non-flashy, as is the label with its simple print and subtle logo. Despite it being churned out by the millions of bottles per year, you get the impression that not a whole lot has changed since the product was first crafted and bottled. It still has the look of a handmade craft product. The back label, in an equally non-flashy way, carries a bit of information about the philosophy behind the product and the process through which it was created. Here, too, you get the feeling that not much has changed and this, also, is a good thing.
The first test of any vodka: How does it fare neat?
Examining the content of the bottle it is as expected colorless and crystal clear. The smell, as could also be expected from an odorless spirit is almost non-existent: a trace of alcohol and a faint whiff of sweet corn. Titos, in a sense, has the look and smell that you would expect of a premium vodka, crystal clear and by no means off-putting on the nose.

Can You Drink Vodka And Rum On The Same Night
There is nothing inherently unsafe about mixing liquors. Many mixed drinks contain more than one type of liquor. Drinking becomes unsafe due to quantities, not the type of liquor that is drunk.
There is no harm in mixing two or more drinks. It solely depends on the type of alcohol you are mixing. Vodka and Rum go well provided you mix them well and give them company soda, juice, etc. Of course, it will all depend on your taste or preference.
When it comes to drinking, its preferable to stick to either Rum or vodka independently. Even so, mixing the two in a cocktail isnt detrimental.
You can give it a shot depending on your drinking history and habits. Dont overdo it if you dont want to end up with a hangover.
How To Make Vodka At Home: Choosing Ingredients
Vodka is commonly made from wheat, rye, barley, corn, or potatoes. Sugar and molasses can also be used alone or added to other ingredients. Whatever you choose, it must have sugars or starches so that alcohol is ultimately produced.
Feel free to introduce your own ingredients to change and enhance the flavor of your vodka. Yeast eats sugars or starches and spits out alcohol and carbon dioxide.
- When making vodka from grains and potatoes, a mash must be made that contains active enzymes that break down the starches from the grains or potatoes and makes fermentable sugars.
- Fruit juice already contains sugars so starch-degrading enzymes are not needed. As with fruit juice, vodka made from store-bought sugars need only be fermented, thus bypassing the need for a mash.
- When already fermented mediums such as wine are used, the medium can be distilled right away into vodka.

Vodka Root Beer Float
You might want to hold off on making these until after the kids have gone to bed. They look too good to resist!
I like to use hard root beer for that extra kick, but thats up to you. I also go for whipped cream vodka for an extra rich finish.
That being said, if you wanted to make these for everyone, it would be as easy as making a big batch with regular root beer and just adding vodka to the adults drinks.
I did this over the summer and just used different colored straws to tell them apart.

Add Yeast To The Fermentable Medium
Hydrate the appropriate amount of dried distillers or other desired yeast and add it to the liquid. Stir with a clean, sanitized spoon to evenly disperse the yeast.
If using an airlock, the airlock will bubble during active fermentation, and the bubbling will slow dramatically or cease altogether as the liquid becomes completely fermented. Keep the fermenting liquid in a room that is about 80° 85° F to facilitate good, efficient fermentation. Alternately, use a heating belt in cold areas.
- Distillers yeast will ferment cleanly, produce a high amount of alcohol , and produce a relatively low amount of unwanted compounds such as alcohols other than ethanol. The amount of yeast used will depend on the specific brand or type of yeast used.
- Nutrients may be included with the yeast in the yeast packet. Yeast nutrients are needed when fermenting a medium that is low in nutrients, such as sugar solutions, but they can also improve fermentations when used with nutrient-rich mediums such as those made from grains.

Is It Ok To Mix Vodka And Rum
It is ok to mix vodka and Rum in the sense that its neither unsafe nor wrong. However, the effect these drinks can give to a consumer can be pretty heavy.
Vodka and Rum have different properties. Such differences wont give an unpleasant taste. However, if mixed, they can give a person quite a hangover on the following day.
One thing to note is that vodka comes from anything with sweetness on it. Among these are grains, fruits, or sugarcane. On the other hand, Rum comes from sugarcane.
In short, if you mix both drinks, some of their properties wouldnt match. Or at least complement each other.
As always, the level of a hangover would still depend on how much an individual drank. As long as you drink moderately, its not going to be so bad.
Cocktails emerged by mixing either or both of these liquors with other drinks. Its great for parties and relaxing times. However, take it as a rule of thumb to drink one kind of liquor at a time and dont go for several simultaneously.
