What Drinks Are Good With Gin

Why To Make Agin And Coke

7 BEST GIN COCKTAILS (and How to Make Them with 10 Ingredients!) – VOL. 1

The Gin and Coke is a variation on the the;Rum and Coke, the popular drink that youve probably had too many of in your life. The Rum and Coke itself is a variation on the;Cuba Libre, a highball cocktail of rum, cola and lime that was invented Cuba in the early 1900s. It quickly spread to America, where people started to mix cola with all sorts of spirits.

The exact history of mixing Gin and Coke is uncertain. Some people call the drink the Cubata, or say its the Spanish version of Rum and Coke since the preferred spirit in Spain is gin. Whatever the case, the Gin and Coke is an incredible mix of botanical, zingy, sweet and bubbly flavor thats even better than the originalwe think. Here a few tips to making the best gin and coke.

The Bar At The End Of The Tunnel

During quarantine, my business partner Alex Maynard and I have fielded tons of great questions from home bartenders. We shifted our business model to include virtual cocktail tutorials and the question we were asked the most has been: I bought this big beautiful bottle of Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao, and Ive made many, many mai tais, what else can I do with it? So, we got to work and had a great time workshopping some options we could share with folks. One of our favorite recipes is a riff on the Corpse Reviver No. 2. As vaccines are rolled out and folks continue to be thoughtful and safe imbibers, we hope we may come to see the light at the end of a very dark tunnel. As a category of pick-me-up drinks, corpse revivers felt like a good concept to build a drink around. A drink to represent our hope and optimism for a summer where we welcome back our bar industry. To that concept we added a few elements from our springtime farmers markets: cara cara oranges and fennel. We purposely omitted the absinthe from the recipe because we wanted this drink to be something many folks could make at home without having to get a ton of ingredients. The fennel lends the herbaceous anise element the absinthe would have delivered, while the fresh cara cara orange juice ties all the flavors together with a spring-summer bow. Shake, serve, and violà! Now we can see the lightand the bar at the end of the tunnel.Susan Eggett, cofounder at Sequoia Gold

Add Limea Wedge Or Measured Juice

Our best tip for making a mixed drink with coke? Add citrus! The acidity of a lemon or a lime cuts through the sweetness of the cola and makes the drink much more interesting. You can add the lime to this gin and coke in two ways:

  • Squeeze in a lime wedge: Before you garnish with a lime wedge, squeeze it into the drink. This will add about 1 teaspoon lime juice.
  • Add ½ ounce lime juice. Want a more pronounced citrus flavor? Measure out fresh lime juice and add it for an even tastier drink.

Best for Gin and Tonics: Bombay Sapphire at Drizly

There are just enough floral notes in this gin to make it shine when combined with tonic water and a slice of lemon or lime.

Best American:Dorothy Parker at Drizly

This is a thoroughly modern gin with hints of classicism, made using a botanical blend that includes elderberries, citrus, cinnamon, and hibiscus, along with the requisite juniper.

Gin can be distilled from almost anything, including grain, fruit, potatoes, or grapes. But what defines this ever-popular spirit is the predominant use of juniper, which must be included in the mix of botanicals that flavor this important cocktail component.

Gin, a descendant of the Dutch spirit genever, has been around for centuries. Once known as mothers ruin, gin has been experiencing a renaissance over the past few years, with large and small distilleries alike producing various styles like London dry, barrel-aged, and New Western.

Whether you are in the mood for classic cocktails like a Martini or Gin and Tonic or looking to make something more adventurous, here are some of the best gins out there to try now.

Is A Copper Mug Required

Well, a copper mug is never required. But its just more fun! The Gin Gin Mule is often served in a glass . Because its the signature drink of a bar in NYC, its a little more free-form than the classic. But you can certainly serve it in a copper mug, like we chose to here! The copper mug is also perfect for a Moscow mule with gin. Why is it served in a copper mug? A few reasons:

  • The mug turns ice cold, which gives a cool sensation on each sip.;This drink tastes colder when you drink it out of the solid copper mug, which becomes cold the minute the drink hits it. It adds another sensory element to the drinking experience.
  • Tradition!;When youre drinking a;classic cocktail, its fun to drink it the classic way. Back in the 1940s when the drink was invented, the public saw images of Hollywood celebs enjoying the drink in copper mugs. It caught on and became the classic way to drink it to this day.

Looking for copper Moscow mule mugs? The mugs we show here arent in stock, but heres a link to some similar;.

Why Use Simple Syrup And Not Sugar

The main reason to use simple syrup in a cocktail is that it’s easier to mix. Whereas sugar might collect at the bottom of the glass, the simple syrup will dissolve with a quick stir and won’t add floating particles or cloud the transparency of the drink.

The second reason is that you can use flavored simple syrups, and that extra layer of floral, spiced, or fruity accents is actually key in some mixed drinks and cocktails.

Lastly, making your own simple syrup will yield a better flavor than bottled versions and significantly reduce your expenses when stocking your bar.

Because this gin gimlet cocktail is so simple, its all about quality here. The better the gin, the better the drink.;The easiest way to tell if a gin is high quality? Try It Naturally Sweet Or Use Simple Syrup

Alex and I love naturally sweetened drinks, so we love using pure maple syrup in most of our cocktail recipes. It sweetens drinks in a gentler way than simple syrup and it gives it a more nuanced flavor. When we taste test back to back, maple syrup always wins! Simple syrup has a more straightforward flavor: you can use it if you prefer!

Why Is It Called A Gimlet

There are two possible origins to the gimlet cocktail’s name, and they’re both connected to the 19th-century British navy. One points to a naval surgeon, Rear-Admiral Sir Thomas D. Gimlette. He made a scurvy treatment of lime juice more appealing by adding gin . The other account refers to the tool; a gimlet is used to bore holes in wood, and it’s said that sailors used it to gain access to liquor barrels. In either instance, Rose’s Lime Cordial likely came into use because it was the first fruit juice concentrate . Using the preserved juice ensured sailors received their required daily ration of lime.

Dont Be Afraid To Drink Gin Neat

Dont be afraid to drink gin neat, says Smith. These days, a lot more gins are designed to be drunk neat. Gone are the days where drinking gin is like drinking a Christmas tree. He explains that its easier than ever to find a gin that might feature flavors you prefer, whether you like cinnamon or cardamom, citrus or floral notes, especially if you bring barrel-aged gins into the mix. Barrel-aged gins have proliferated in recent years, particularly from small-batch distillers across the U.S. Longtimers like No. 209 in San Francisco even experiment with different barrels, aging its gin in sauvignon blanc or cabernet sauvignon wine barrels.

When making gin and tonics, choose a gin that is mid- to high-shelf. A London dry gin , Plymouth or Bombay work well. London dry gins will be more straightforward in flavor while Plymouth gin will be a bit more aromatic. Weve also used Bombay Sapphire and loved it, but we really enjoy Sapphires extra spiciness.

Best Top Shelf: Hendricks

Hendricks really revived the gin category by thinking outside the box, said Smith. This Scottish distillery helped to modernize and innovate the gin category with a floral recipe that includes prominent notes of cucumber and rose in the mix of botanicals used.
