Do Your Gin Is A Family Project

How to make sloe gin – BBC Good Food

In terms of career choice and personality, the two of us couldn’t be more different: Leon is an aerospace engineer, the tinkerer in the duo who keeps track of things when Vincent’s exuberant creativity is already at the next lab test . And yet we are a close-knit team, because we share a common passion: cocktails & good drinks!

What began with making gin sets in our spare time has now become a full-time job for us. The gin has been joined by bottle aged whisky, and we plan to add more high-proof treats to our range. Always true to our motto: Less is more when in doubt and homemade is always better than bought! We simply love to experiment – and we want to pass this joy on to our customers … with products that also cut a good figure as gifts.

– Cheers, Leon & Vincent

10 Great Things You Can Do with Your Old Gin Bottles

Whether you drink gin every night in a martini or mix it with tonic water, you may be wondering what this alcohol does to your body. First, it’s important to know what gin even is. While straight gin may not taste overly flavorful, it is flavored. Sam Carter, senior brand ambassador for gin distillery Bombay Sapphire, explained to Good Housekeeping that gin is made from and flavored by juniper. While gin can contain other natural ingredients, such as wheat and rye, juniper must be the plant predominately used. Otherwise, it’s not gin.

There are different types of gin on the market, but, according to Carter, London Dry Gin is of the highest quality. “It’s kind of gin in its purest form,” he explained. In order to be classified as London Dry Gin, the distillery “can’t add any artificial flavourings or additives after distillation.” You can also buy “distilled” gin. Like London Dry Gin, this gin is, of course, distilled. It differs from it’s superior cousin, though, because flavorings are permitted after it’s distilled.

So, now that you’ve aced Gin 101, let’s move on to the health portion. When you drink gin every night, this is what happens to your body.

Best For A Red Snapper: Mcclures Bloody Mary Mixer

    Courtesy of Amazon

Region: USA | ABV: 0% | Tasting Notes: Cucumber, Dill, Pepper

The Red Snapper is basically a Bloody Mary made with gin, adding a burst of botanicals that you wouldnt find in the traditional vodka-based version of this drink. This mixer from McClures, a company well known for its pickles, is a great choice. Its made using real tomato juice, pickle brine, dill, and garlic, and is full of flavors that will complement the gin instead of overpowering it. Theres a spicy version as well if you are so inclined.

    Is Gin Stronger Than Vodka

Vodka is a neutral spirit made from fermentable ingredients such as grain or fruit thats distilled or treated to make a spirit without character, aroma, taste or color. Gin, on the other hand, is a spirit that is 40 percent ABV or higher, with its main characteristic flavor derived from juniper berries.

Gin is a fascinating liquor to explore. Its botanicals give it a characteristic that no other liquor has one brand can have a completely different profile from another and it is surprisingly versatile when it comes to flavor profiles. Gin is also the foundation for some of the best drinks ever made, including the iconic martini.

Though certainly not as numerous as vodka cocktails, there are thousands of great gin cocktails to explore and the list can be quite overwhelming. Some cocktails work best with a specific gin, some are for acquired tastes and others are reliable and always there for us when we need them.

If you’re just starting out on your journey through the world of gin cocktails, we recommend the ones listed below as essential to your experience. All are quite popular, some more than others, and each has a different appeal that has drawn in drinkers year after year for decades.

You Can Improve Your Heart Health If You Drink Gin Every Night

Everything you need to know about Gin | How to Drink

“As with other types of alcohol, there is some evidence to suggest that moderate consumption can help reduce the risk of heart attacks…,” nutritionist Jackie Lynch confirmed to Good to Know. Now, that doesn’t mean you can throw back martini after martini and expect to strengthen your heart. “This relates to one small glass per day, as studies have shown that as you increase your intake to three glasses per day the risk of cardiovascular disease increases dramatically,” the nutritionist continued. She further recommended opting for a “single rather than a double measure” of gin to be safe.

Although a nightly gin martini can improve your heart health, a gin and tonic may not, due to the added sugar. Because an excess consumption of sugar has been linked to heart disease, you’re going to want to avoid adding any sweet mixers to your measure of gin if you choose to drink gin every night.

You May Not Have To Worry About Hypoglycemia If You Drink Gin Every Night

Gin, especially London Dry Gin, is incredibly natural. Sam Carter, senior brand ambassador for gin distillery Bombay Sapphire, explained to Good Housekeeping that this variety of gin contains just 0.01 grams of sugar per liter. And, since no flavorings or additives are allowed to be added to the gin after it’s distilled, it’s very clean. But, even if you don’t opt for London Dry Gin, distilled gin is also quite natural. Yes, gin is a great fit for people looking to eat a clean diet, but it’s arguably an ever greater fit for people with type 1 diabetes.

According to a study published by the Journal of Diabetes Nursing , gin is the best choice for people with this condition as it doesn’t contribute to hypoglycemia the way other kinds of alcohol do. As part of the study, researchers compared the blood levels of participants after drinking alcoholic beverages and found that blood levels remained the highest in participants who drank gin with a no-carb tonic. Choosing to drink gin every night, as opposed to other drinks like whiskey, doesn’t sound so bad, does it?

What To Do With Boozy Old Fruit

Our sloe gin and damson vodka have been strained, bottled and are now winking at us with temptation from the drinks shelf. Whats left behind looks much less appetising old, shrivelled, wrinkly and full of booze. No, we didnt invite Keith Richards round to help with the bottling process, were talking about the used sloes and damsons. But, much like the aforementioned axe-grinder, theres still a gig or two left in the old fruit yet. Rich has already snaffled the sloes for a drop of slider* so I get to play with the damsons. And here are my top five suggestions

    1. Another spirit infusionThere will be enough damson flavour to repeat the infusion process with another spirit. Probably best to move on to a stronger flavoured, dark drink such as brandy, rum or my choice this year whisky .

    2. Fortified portSome folk create fortified port style wines by soaking the fruit and 100g sugar in a bottle of red wine for a few months . When ready add 100 to 200ml of brandy to bring it to your desired booziness and taste. Or you could try drowning them in sherry and skip the brandy phase.

    3. Chocolate**For an extravagant chocolate liqueur, remove the stones, mix into melted chocolate and allow to set before wolfing down with glee.

    4. SauceRemove stones. Blitz in blender. Pour over ice cream.

    5. Puddings, biscuits and cakesRemove stones and use the chopped fruit as a substitute for dried fruit in anything from flapjacks to spotted dick.

Orange Gin and Tonic with Cinnamon

Gin, gin, gin. Ive had a heck of a time with you this month. I really have been trying to like you. I even ordered a gin cocktail when I was out at a bar recently.

Honestly, Ive really enjoyed trying these gin cocktail recipes, but I realized that I dont see gin in food recipes all that often. Or perhaps I just havent been looking. I set out to change that, as I do each month when I round up food recipes with different spirits.

Gin is very flavorful, so youre only going to want to use it when you need a bit of herbal, floral flavor added to your dish. It is definitely strong, so be careful not to overpower the other tastes in your dish. Only add gin in moderation, as you would other flavors like vanilla extract or cayenne pepper.

Freezing it: Alcohol has a lower freezing point than water, which means it might not freeze correctly. If youre making a frozen dessert, too much gin might keep the ice from forming properly.

Savory dishes: Gin goes great with pasta, fish and poultry.

Sweet dishes: It can also go into desserts, pretty much anything from baking to mousses to iced treats.

Preserves: You can add gin to preserves like savory pickles and sweet jams for a heavier flavor.

    Gin Is Meant For Cocktails

As we said before in this article, most people see gin as a spirit that is mainly made to be a perfect addition to cocktails. You can of course drink your gin neat, as some gins are amazing on its own, but most commonly youll see it used as a base in a cocktail.

If you want the full experience of a nice bottle of gin, there are two ways to go about it. Firstly, I do recommend you try at least on glass neat. Experiencing the rawest form of the gin will make you understand the palate and, if the gin is actually good, will make you appreciate it much more.

From there, try it in your favorite gin-based cocktail. A classic such as the gin and tonic will always be great, but you can also play around with the flavor palate. Most gins have been infused by different botanicals, so you can mix and match to your liking.

If You Drink Gin Every Night It Won’t Prevent You From Getting Malaria

If you’ve ever heard anyone make reference to gin curing or preventing malaria, there is some basis to the claim sort of. While there’s nothing in gin that can prevent the disease, tonic water contains a compound from the bark of the cinchona tree known as quinine. According to Healthline, quinine was first used to fight malaria and with great success. “It was crucial in reducing the death rate of workers building the Panama Canal in the early 20th century,” the publication noted. As of this writing, quinine is still prescribed in some areas to combat the disease, although it’s not really used to prevent contracting the disease.

Technically, modern-day tonic water may have some preventative abilities, but you’d need to drink a lot of G and Ts. Deb Mills, medical director of The Travel Doctor, did the math and came up with a figure of 67 liters of tonic water per day. So, 33 and a half 2-liter bottles. Don’t try this at home, folks. Maybe, if you choose to drink gin every night, don’t always use the tonic water.
