Can You Use Tap Water Moonshine
When creating moonshine wash, always use distilled water rather than tap water. This is one of the most critical pieces of advice I can provide to moonshiners, yet it is one of the most overlooked. The presence of a variety of chemicals in tap water is no secret among them are chlorine, chlorate, bromate, and fluoride, to name a few.
What Is In An Apple Cider Whiskey Sour
This Apple Cider Whiskey Sour adds apple cider to a traditional whiskey sour recipe. Well, that much should be obvious from the title! But I have also taken things up a notch by making my simple syrup with cinnamon for an added warm-spice element.
So basically, to make this apple cider whiskey sour you will need apple cider, whiskey, fresh lemon juice, and a simple syrup made with cinnamon.
The end result is a sweeter take on a whiskey sour with a hint of cinnamon shining through. The apple cider definitely adds a lot of sweetness to this cocktail which, for me, makes it more enjoyable to drink. If thats not your thing, you can easily adjust the amount of apple cider to suit your own preferences.
Can You Make Rye Whiskey Mash From Moonshine
Yes, in a nutshell. When illegal liquor distillation first began, the spirits produced were clear in color and tasted more like vodka yet, moonshine in its purest form is virtually the same as whiskey. Even if the procedure is same, the absence of age results in a flavor that is not as complex as the genuine article.

An Elegant Dinner Party Option: The Apple Chai Whiskey Sour
No good dinner party, or any kind of party really, would be complete without cocktails. And this recipe is a great way to wow your guests with a distinctive take on the classic whisky sour flavors without straying too far into experimental territory!
Chai tea is one of those ubiquitous beloved flavors, popping up everywhere from deserts to hot chocolates, and it also lends itself perfectly to this cocktail.
Providing sweet and spiced aromatic notes that work perfectly with the tartness of the apple and whiskey.
- 1 oz apple cider
- 1 oz strong chai tea
- 1 oz simple syrup, either storebought or homemade
- 1 orange to zest
Make your own simple syrup by combining equal parts sugar and water over medium-low heat for approximately 5-10 minutes, until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture thickened slightly.
Making Moonshine Is A Science
While making moonshine can take place in the kitchen, it is much closer to a science experiment. Time, temperature and amounts make a big difference between getting a good mash and wasting your time and ingredients.
Another step that only takes a moment but can make all the difference is to perform an iodine test. An iodine test is simply adding a few drops of iodine to a sample of your mash to check for conversion. This test is simple, cheap and only takes a few moments.
If there are still starches in your mash, the iodine will turn blue. This means that conversion is not yet complete and your mash needs more time. If the mash returns to its normal color, it means that there are no starches present and you are ready to ferment.
So before starting this recipe, make sure you have a good cooking thermometer, all the ingredients and a few hours to get it done.

The Classic: Apple Sour
This is a refreshing twist on the classic whiskey sour, one that will be a surefire crowd-pleaser at any party. Evoking the crisp flavors of an apple martini, this apple whiskey sour will provide something for aficionados and less experienced drinkers alike.
Where most sour cocktails fail, is in providing something that is either artificially sweet or overtaken sourness, both of which can be avoided by the inclusion of a high-quality apple juice.
Try to avoid overly sweet or processed options, and get an organic brand that retains the subtle tartness and crisp flavors of apple. In terms of whiskey, a classic Speyside malt such as a Glenlivet or a Macallan will provide a perfect backdrop for the apple flavors.
- 1 1/4 ounces high-quality apple juice
- 2 dashes of Peychauds bitters
- 1 slice of apple
If you want to really get in touch with those autumnal vibes, and win over the Instagram crowd, substitute the whiskey for a high-rye content bourbon such as Woodfords or Basil Haydens and add a dusting of pumpkin spice mix to garnish.

Amazing Apple Rye Whiskey Recipe
Make rye whiskey with a delicious twist with our apple rye whiskey recipe!
Making moonshine can be a simple process. With the right recipe and equipment it can be no more complicated than fifth grade science class.
However, once you master the basics, you will likely be looking for your next challenge. That is where some of our more advanced recipes come in. Blending grains, using enzymes and even adding fruit to recipes are all next level moonshine techniques. While they may be more advanced to master, they also offer more rewards.
While it is arguably easier to make a simple sugar shine and flavor it, it doesnt offer the same satisfaction as making a grain mash and aging it. It also doesnt quite offer the same bragging rights.
That is one of the best parts about making moonshine after all-bragging about it to your friends.
Of course, the friends show up in droves once they realize that you have plenty of shine and are willing to share. Luckily, this recipe makes a lot of shine. The recipe will yield about 5 to 6 gallons of mash to ferment. The amount of finished product will depend on your distillation process. Although we recommend distilling twice for this one.

Whats In An Apple Whiskey Sour
The full list of ingredients can be found down below in the printable recipe card but here are the stars of the recipe!
- Bourbon whiskey bourbon pairs best with the apple and lemon in this recipe, but if you dont have any hand a standard American whiskey would work too
- Apple cider
- Simple syrup
While I dont recommend using that super expensive bottle of whiskey your husband bought that has been quietly aging at the back of your liquor cabinet, I do suggest you use a decent quality bourbon whiskey for whiskey mixed drinks.
Dont go crazy spending tons of money because the apple cider and simple syrup will mask the flavor of the whiskey a bit, but you can definitely tell when you use the cheap stuff.
Just ask the clerk at your local liquor store for a suggestion, there are some really great options out there for any budget!

I dont keep sugar cubes on hand, so I used a half teaspoon of sugar, saturated it with orange bitters, then added a 1/2 teaspoon of water and a strip of orange zest. They were muddled together until the sugar was dissolved, and then I added the whiskey. If you have simple syrup on hand, that could take the place of the sugar and water. You can adjust the amount of sugar to your tastes, but I found that 1/2 teaspoon was plenty sweet enough for me.
How To Infuse Whiskey With This Apple Cinnamon Whiskey Recipe Perfect To Sip On Or Make Into A Fall Cocktail
I look forward to Fall mostly just for the Fall flavors, well maybe the cooler weather too. I am the first in line for a pumpkin spice latte when it arrives I even consider that day the first day of Fall. I am basic to the core and I embrace it. So why would you think it would be any different when it comes to my cocktails?
I love to infuse vodkas so I thought why not try to infuse whiskey? I had apple pie moonshine a few years ago when I was in Tennessee and it just tasted like fall in a mason jar. I was inspired by that to make apple cinnamon infused whiskey.

Apple Cider Whiskey Smash
An easy and flavorful Fall cocktail perfect for all apple cider fans!
I love Fall and almost all it has to offer but come this time of yearoak trees are a giant nuisance. We have several lining our driveway which basically means its now littered with acorns. Im not talking about a few here or there. That wouldnt be so bad. And its really only just starting. We have a long way to go before the trees are bare, in preparation for winter.
The only comical part about it is listening to them fall through the branches and slam into the ground. I wonder if its a sign of things to come as well, especially since theyre food for many animals. Lets hope thats not the case
In other news I went to Bath and Body Works the other day in hopes of finding a fun new fragrance. The typical perfumes and sprays at other stores are so strong or floral scented not really my thing. But, I still found myself totally overwhelmed by all of the options and scents available. Normally I just go in for soap or candles. A fragrance for yourself is a whole other ballgame. And to make matters worse, it seems like when you initially spray something, it doesnt smell nearly as good as it does minutes later. I finally chose a fun vanilla scent but I was *this* close to getting something a bit more tropical. I guess Ill hold off on that option till summer. AKA a lifetime away now.
This apple cider whiskey smash is the perfect Fall drink , especially if you love apple cider! Its a must try!
How To Make Moonshine: Making A Mash
Making moonshine is a three-step process. The first step is making your mash. This step is important because for a grain-based recipe like this one you need to complete a mash conversion.
A grain conversion is essentially when your grains turn from a starch into a fermentable sugar. There are many ways to achieve this. Most moonshine recipes use a malted barley. However, this recipe uses a high temperature enzyme to help with that process.
In addition to these additives, your mash also needs time and temperature in order for conversion to take place.
A good cooking thermometer will be your best friend while moonshining.
