How Much Alcohol Is In A Margarita
This really depends on the recipe and your preferences. My preferred ratio for a great margarita is 2 parts Tequila to 1 part lime juice and 1 part Triple Sec. Thats quite a bit of alcohol in any given margarita .
So for a typical glass, you could expect 3 ounces of alcohol. If you want less alcohol in your drink, simply use a 1:1:1 ratio .

Erins Easy Entertaining Tips
Margaritas are a brilliant drink to make for any type of get-together, whether its a Mexican Dinner Party, Cinco de Mayo or just a random Tuesday when you want to have friends over for happy hour.
One of the best things about them is you can make them in batches, too, to make your life easier.
Here are a few thoughts on making margaritas with mix for entertaining:
- Juice your limes in advance. Alternately, consider purchasing the cold press lime juice from the refrigerated section of your grocery store. Yes, its more expensive than juicing your own, but its significantly faster unless you have an electric juicer.
- Make the simple syrup in advance, too. This stuff keeps in the fridge for weeks, so you dont have to make it the day youre making your homemade margarita mix.
- Double the homemade margarita mixrecipe if youre serving a crowd.
- Let guests mix their own margaritasor make a pitcher to make pouring even easier!
How Do I Garnish A Frozen Margarita
Garnish a frozen marg just like you would a regular onewith a salted rim and a circle of lime. If youd prefer to go outside the box, try an orange or kiwi slice. You can even use a strawberry if youre whipping up something like this lemon berry margarita. Herbs like basil and rosemary can also add an interesting flavor and look gorgeous.
A fun alternative to a salted rim is to mix both kosher salt and coarse sugar together, then rim the glass as usual to get the perfect salty-sweet combination.

Choose A Sweetener To Balance Out The Citrus Of Your Mixer
Have you ever bitten straight into a lime? I bet you puckered just reading that question…
Limes are incredibly tart, and margaritas need just the right amount of sweetness to balance out that acidity. That’s why cane sugar, simple syrup, or agave nectar are essential ingredients in any margarita mix. We’re not even going to talk about high-fructose corn syrup and all that S#*t that you shouldn’t be drinking anyways.
Simple Syrup: Simple syrup is the most common sweetener used in margaritas, and you can find a quick recipe simple syrup recipe we wrote here. Simple syrup is made by boiling sugar and water together until the sugar has dissolved, and it’s typically a one-to-one ratio of sugar to water. Super easy, and can be customized to integrate other flavors as well like this strawberry simple syrup.
Agave Nectar: This is what you’ll find in FICKS Margarita Mix and our other tequila-focused cocktail mixers. Agave nectar is a popular alternative to simple syrup because it’s a natural sweetener derived from the agave plant. It has a similar taste to honey, and is a great way to add some sweetness to margaritas without adding any additional flavors. It’s also a little healthier, as it has a lower glycemic index than sugar.
Tips For The Best Margaritas
- To get the most juice out of each lime, let them come to room temperature and roll them on a hard surface before cutting them in half and squeezing them.
- You dont need to boil the sugar and water mixture . It just needs to be heated through so that the sugar dissolves when you stir it.
- If you are sensitive to the very tart flavor of the lime juice, you can add up to one cup more water to make the mix less acidic.

Triple Sec is a sweet orange flavored liqueur. Using triple sec in a margarita will help sweeten it up, as well as more dimension from the bitter orange flavor in the triple sec. Some recipes for a skinny margarita swap out triple sec for orange juice. This will reduce calories and sweetness, but you will lose some complexity in the drink.

No Added Sugar: By Definition
Youll notice theres one element of many margarita recipes missing: sugar! Many bars, restaurants and of course store bought mixes add lots of simple syrup or added corn syrup. Why ruin this classic drink by making it syrupy sweet?
Added sugar isnt even by definition included in this classic cocktail. And dont worry: this margarita tastes perfectly tart and balanced with no need for added sweetener. To be fair, there is some sugar in the Cointreau: it provides just enough balance to the lemon and lime.
How To Upgrade Your Margarita
There are so many ways you can upgrade your margarita recipe! Try out some of these varieties to shake things up a bit.
Spice up your salt rim. I like to add lime zest and a pinch of cayenne to the salt. You can also add a bit of sugar to the mix.
Try it with mezcal! A mezcal margarita is a very different experience but just as delightful. Mezcal is an Oaxacan spiritlike tequila, its from the agave plant, but has a smokier profile. It can make a lovely margarita with a complex flavor.
Add some fruit for a flavored margarita. This is a classic way to personalize your margarita. I love to add fresh berries in the summer, either muddled into a drink on the rocks or blended in a frozen margarita.
Cointreau is a type of triple sec, or orange liqueur, which is a classic choice for margaritas. But there are many types of triple sec out there that would be just as delicious. You can also try other types of orange liqueurs like Grand Marnier or Curacao, which will change the flavor slightly.

What’s The Difference Between A Daiquiri And A Margarita
The daiquiri and margarita are two very popular classic cocktails that have a similar sweet-tart flavor profile. The original recipes for both use lime juice, though the daiquiri has a rum base and is typically sweetened with simple syrup rather than triple sec. Both cocktails can be made with a variety of fruits or tossed in the blender too.
Best Lime Juice For Margaritas
Lastly, Lime Juice. There are three options. #1, and you cant really replace this, is freshly squeezed lime juice. This is the best. No question. No debate.
If you want a shortcut you can use Santa Cruz organic lime juice, not from concentrate. You can find this at Whole Foods or other grocery stores. I actually use this more than freshly squeezed lime just for convenience.
The last option is RealLime or lime juice from concentrate. Itll work if thats all you have but its pretty harsh and sour.

Every Good Margarita Mix Starts With Its Limes
Why are limes so important to margaritas? Because they provide that delicious citrusy tang that makes margaritas, well, margaritas. And not just any lime will do – you want to make sure they’re fresh, juicy, and green. If your limes are starting to brown or get wrinkly, they’re past their prime and won’t give your margarita mix the flavor it deserves.
There are different types of limes that can alter the taste of your margarita. The most common lime is the Persian lime, which is what you’ll find in your standard margarita mix. These limes are relatively small, with a thick skin that’s easy to remove. If you’re looking for a margarita with a little more zing, go for the key lime. Key limes are smaller and more tart than Persian limes, so they’ll give your margarita a bit of extra acidity.
What type of lime is best in margaritas? The answer is: it depends on your taste. If you like your margaritas on the sweeter side, go with Persian limes. If you prefer a tart margarita, go for key limes. And if you can’t decide, mix it up and use both!

How To Turn This Into A Cocktail
How do you turn margarita mix into a margarita? Just add alcohol! I love just making a classic margarita with this mix. Two of my other favorites are to make a frozen margarita or a frozen strawberry margarita. Heres exactly how much alcohol to add, to make either a single margarita or an entire pitcher:
- How much liquor do I add to make my margarita? You will use 3 ounces of the mix, 2 ounces tequila, and 1 ounce triple sec.
- Can I pre-make this mix with alcohol, so I just have to pour it instead of mixing it for individual drinks? Yes, if you want to make this into a pitcher drink, you can mix 22 ounces of tequila with 11 ounces of the triple sec into the margarita mix to get your premade margaritas.

How To Make Your Margarita Mix Last
Have some margarita mix left over, or party isn’t starting for a few days? No problem! There are ways to extend the life of your margarita mix. And no we’re not talking about preservatives! Rather than use preservatives, FICKS cocktail mixers are heated to near boiling in a process called pasteurization which basically kills off any dangerous microbes to make our mixers shelf stable. You can use this same process to make sure your margarita mix lasts a couple weeks in the fridge for you to enjoy a little each night, or save for your next cocktail party.
A quick lesson on pasteurization. Pasteurization is a food safety process where foods are heated to a temperature that kills off harmful bacteria. While this might make you think your margarita mix will be heated to the point where it’s no longer tasty, that’s not the case! The margarita mix only needs to be heated to 140-160°F for a minute or two. This is hot enough to kill any harmful bacteria, but not so hot that it will ruin the taste of your margarita mix.
Here’s how to pasteurize your margarita mix:
How To Make My Famous Two
Because of the ingredients I use and without the need for simple syrup or sugar Ive found that making these margaritas are best using a 3-2-2 ratio.
2. Add ice to a cocktail shaker/strainer.
3. Pour three ounces tequila, two ounces orange liqueur, and two ounces of lime juice into the cocktail shaker.
4. Seal cocktail shaker and shake VIGOROUSLY for about 30 seconds. This gets the margarita extremely cold and crisp.
5. Strain the cocktail shaker over your iced cocktail glasses.
6. Add the garnish of your choice.

Is Triple Sec Required In A Margarita
Triple sec is one of the key ingredients in a margarita. It acts as the drink’s sweetener and adds a hint of orange flavor. You can use another orange liqueur, such as curaçao, and the Cadillac margarita uses the brandy-based Grand Marnier. Though definitely not an authentic margarita, some people prefer to skip the liqueur and use simple syrup with a squeeze of fresh orange juice instead . With these changes, you will need to play with the proportions to create a well-balanced margarita.
How Long Can You Store Homemade Margarita Mix
Want to save yourself the hassle of squeezing a bunch of limes the morning of your party? Homemade Margarita Mix can be made and stored in an airtight container for up to one week in the refrigerator. You can store it for up to one additional week, however the flavors will begin to dull at that point.
When you are ready to serve the mix, give it a good shake or stir, because the lime zest will have settled to the bottom, and some separation may have occurred with the syrup.
