How Patrón Makes Its Tequila

Hard liquors like vodka, rum, tequila, and whiskey most liqueurs, including Campari, St. Germain, Cointreau, and Pimm’s and bitters are perfectly safe to store at room temperature.

Proudly Made In Mexico

Patron is known for making high-quality and smooth tequila fermented , a fruit commonly found in hot and arid regions of Mexico. Patron tequila was originally produced by Casa 7 Leguas, one of Mexicos oldest distilleries.

Since being introduced to the world in 1989, Patron has become well-known in popular culture circles, often referenced in movies, television, and the music industry. In January of 2018, Patron was actually bought by Bacardi, the worlds largest private spirits company for approximately $5.1 million.

Why Is Patron So Expensive

Patron tequila is expensive due to the combined effects of its reputation, popularity, taste, quality and packaging. The tequila is also made from what is considered the best type of agave for spirit distilling, Blue Weber Agave. How Is Patron Tequila Made

Patron tequila is made by fermenting the fruit of the blue agave plant. The plant takes a long time to mature, taking nearly eight to ten years to reach the perfect level of ripeness.

For this reason, Patron is often considered a premium spirit because of how difficult it is to produce large quantities. Once the plant has grown to produce fruit with optimal sugar levels, the fruit is then harvested.

The piña is then chopped up and placed in a brick oven to cook evenly on all sides. This allows the sugars in the fruit to break down more easily, which will make it easier for the production of alcohol levels.

The chopped piña is then crushed and ground up. The pulp is left for three days to ferment, and is then distilled in handmade barrels for a minimum of two months. The oldest tequila offered by Patron is their Añejo 7 Años, which is aged for seven years.

What Makes This Patron A Top Tequila

Authentic tequila comes from blue agave. However, tequila is only required to be composed of 51 percent blue agave and is often mixed with a spirit derived from cane sugar juice.

Producers often take this shortcut because blue agave takes eight years of difficult growing to mature before tequila can even be created, let alone aged. Patrón Silver Tequila is made from only the finest Weber Blue Agave for timeless authenticity. In fact, Patrón still extracts some of its fermentable sugars from the agave using the traditional method of a stone tahona wheel in addition to a factory mill.

The Spirit Of Sustainability

Patrón is also well-regarded for its commitment to sustainability. The company tries to ensure its entire production process is eco-friendly and environmentally conscious.

For example, the remains of the agave hearts are composted and used on the haciendas garden and also shared with the local community. The company has also installed a natural gas pipeline to reduce carbon emissions. And the hacienda has a reverse osmosis irrigation system that recovers around 70% of wastewater from the production process.

A Premium Tequila Requires Premium Pias

How Is the Patron Tequila Bottle Cork Made?

Patrón tequila is made at the Hacienda Patrón, a colonial mansion located in the Jalisco Highlands in Mexico.

One of the many things that make Patrón specialand allows it to charge drinkers such a steep priceis the fact that its made entirely from the blue weber agave plant.

This is a plant that takes eight or so years to reach the requisite level of ripeness, but Patrón is well rewarded for its patience. By waiting for the plant to fully ripen, the brands jimadores take advantage of its optimum level of sweetness, hand-selecting those piñasor fruitswith the highest sugar content.

The difference is impressive. While the average piña is 22% sugar, those used by Patrón are 26% sugar.

These piñas are then chopped and cooked in small brick ovens for around 70 hours to help the sugars break down. The fruit is then crushed and ground using a mix of the modern Roller Mill method and the traditional Tahona wheel.

The latter is a labour-intensive process that involves chiselling a chunk of volcanic stone into a wheel. This wheel is then pulled with a mechanical arm across the roasted agave hearts to extract the juice.

This method is around 500 years old and originally donkeys were used to haul the stone. Youll be glad to hear no donkeys suffer in the making of Patrón, but their modernised version of the Tahona wheel is part of the reason their tequila tastes so good.
