Joven Or Gold Tequila

Gold tequilas were widely distributed in the US during the last few decades of the 20th century.

Unaged, gold tequilas are usually mixtos, colored and flavored with caramel, oak extract, glycerin, syrup, and other additives.

In other words: theyre sugary. Gold tequilas are the prime culprit behind those nasty tequila hangovers.

Whats The Best Salt For Rimming A Margarita

Avoid fine-grained salts, particularly iodized table salt, when rimming your margarita glass. The crystals are simply too small, get clumpy when wet, and create a very salty cocktail. For a much better drinking experience, choose a coarse salt, such as kosher salt or sea salt flakes. While there are plenty available and the flavors are fun, you dont need a dedicated margarita salt its often just kosher or sea salt. You can even make your own flavored salts with citrus zest, herbs, and spices.

What The Heck Is Mezcal

Remember when I said that REAL tequila is made from BLUE agave and only in very specific regions? Well, when those guidelines are not followed, what you have is mezcal . Made from the more common Maguey plant , mezcal has a smoky and MUCH harsher taste to it. It is not a strict rule, but generally speaking, mezcal is considered lower-quality and less refined than tequila.

Tequila Don Ramón Platinium Cristalino Reposado is double-distilled and rested in American and French oak, resulting in a smooth, delicate taste and robust profile.

Made from 100% Blue Agave from the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico, this cristalino clear spirit can be described as soft, medium-bodied, and woody with complex gourmand notes. The aging process allows the spirit to mellow, taking on a deep and complex character, with a balanced herbal and citrus finish.

After maturation in oak, a complex filtration process removes most of the liquid’s golden color and piquancy. This results in an exquisitely smooth taste, and long finish calling for easy-sipping and exquisite cocktails.

AGAVE: 100% blue agave

AGED: Rested in American and French Oak

Some tequilas are so light that they just get lost if you make a drink with them, says Easterbrook. Bold and full-bodied, ArteNoms reposado doesnt have that problem. When you add it to a drink, you can still get that agave flavor, he says, and it stands up to the sweetener and citrus. That makes for the perfect , which, after all, is a marriage of the three. Youre getting sweet, sour, and tequila all in one sip, says Easterbrook. Its just delicious. Still, it doesnt lack versatility, so you can use this one in any version of the cocktail you choose to make: on the rocks, up, with a salt rim, or even frozen and with flavorings.

Don Ramon Cristalino Tequilas

All the cristalinos Ive seen so far have been, as the name implies, crystal clear. This isnt the case with Don Ramons cristalino tequilas, however. The first thing you notice is that the anejo has an almost imperceptible pale straw color, and the color of the reposado is just a little more noticeable. This is a decision made by the maestro tequilero as a reflection of the qualities of the original aged spirits.

All three tequilas are 100% blue agave and bottled at 40% ABV .

Casa Don Ramon Enters The Expanding Market For Cristalino Tequilas With Its Platinium Collection Which Includes A Reposado And An Anejo Cristalino

I recently reviewed and rated the first mezcal from Casa Don Ramon, a distillery previously only known for its tequilas. Its clearly not a company to rest on its laurels as it now introduces a new Platinium collection of three tequilas, two of which are cristalinos. The Platinium collection consists of a plata or blanco tequila, a cristalino reposado, and a cristalino anejo.

What Is The Difference Between Reposado And Aejo

The answer is time.

Both spirits are tequila, made from agave. But reposados and añejos are very different different in the fermentation process, color, and even flavor.

Reposado means rested and añejo means vintage or aged. So it makes sense that añejos are aged longer than reposados after the distillation process. And this aging process does add depth and complexity to flavors.

Another difference is price. It stands to logic that reposados, with less time between distillation and consumption, are a bit less expensive than añejos. But the richness of an añejo, when sipped properly, is usually worth the extra expense.

Heres your tequila cheat sheet.

  • Añejo means vintage or aged and reposado means rested.
  • Añejo tequila is aged for a minimum of one year but not more than 3 years, while reposado is aged for a minimum of 2 months but not more than a year.
  • Añejo is kept in special small barrels. Reposados are kept in all types of barrels.
  • As añejo is aged, more complex flavors are imparted to the tequila. Reposados typically retain a mellow oak flavor.
  • Reposados are a light straw-yellow color, especially when compared to the dark amber or caramel color of añejo tequila.

Bonus: Crme De Violette

Admittedly not a particularly common or versatile ingredient, anyone whos ever bought an entire bottle of crème de violette to make the classic Aviation cocktail can understand the desire to find something anything! to mix with this fragrant purple liqueur. Luckily, a tequila like Milagro Silver offers the right level of floral character to pair remarkably well with crème de violette, while an older tequilas typical vanilla and baking spice notes can ease the liqueurs otherwise cloying sweetness. Just remember: A little bit goes a long way, unless you want your drink to taste like the perfume counter at Bloomingdales.

Exotico Reposado 100% Agave Tequila

BEST PRICE

Surprisingly, reposado tequila doesnt always have to reach a crazy price in order to be tasty, just take Exotico for example. This six-month aged bottle sits typically at the $25 mark, making it an affordable bottle when checking out reposado for the very first time. Its aged in white oak bourbon barrels, imparting a flavor that hits somewhere between boisterous and low-key, giving an all-around blend of vanilla, dry fruit, spices, with an aftertaste of oak, caramel and cinnamon. Youll be confused as to why this one isnt priced higher, thats for sure.

How To Drink It

This actually seems to be the biggest mystery among the uninitiated nobody seems to know how to drink tequila outside of margaritas and shots.

You can apply most of the same rules to tequila that you would to whiskey or scotch. If drinking something good, an aficionado will drink 3-5oz. out of a snifter served at room temperature, or on the rocks. Thats it. Theres no need to shake the glass or sniff it, the aromas will become more prevalent as you are drinking. One drink should last you most of the night .

Remember, the good stuff is to be enjoyed, not pounded. If the flavor is too intense for you, salt about an inch of your glass and have a slice of lime on hand as a quick chaser. A good tequila should have a warm kick to it, and it should start in your chest

When taking a shot, always remember to raise your glass before drinking if you are with company. Its not required that a full, heavy hearted toast be delivered upon every shot, but its generally considered a courtesy to give your fine drink and even finer company the nod. If everyone is taking a shot , then a good customary toast is, in unison, Parriba! Pabajo! Pal Centro! Y Pa Dentro! . Once again, if the flavor is too intense salt, shot, lime.

If you want something different , make yourself Sangrita by combining orange juice, tomato juice, and cayenne powder. Take this sweet/spicy mixture in alternating shots with your tequila of choice, no salt or lime needed.
