Bourbon Vs. Scotch: Lets Understand the Difference?

Average Price: Distillery Only

The Whiskey:

This South Carolina bourbon is all about small batching and farm-to-glass experiences. The corn-fueled spirit with a very high malted barley component is aged for four years before its re-barreled in new toasted oak barrels for a final three-month rest. Those barrels and then vatted and the whiskey is proofed with local water for bottling.

Bottom Line:

This is very crafty with all that graininess. Its still good but very outside of the standard bourbon vibes. That said, this grainy feel is what a lot of next-generation distillers and blenders are moving toward right now.

Bourbon Has To Hit Certain Abv Marks

The real difference between scotch, whiskey, and bourbon

When bourbon is barreled, it also has to hit a certain proof, or alcohol content in the spirit. The mash must be distilled at 160 proof or less, and aged in barrels until it is no more than 125 proof or less. Before bottling, bourbon is filtered and diluted down to no less than 80 proof . Other whiskeys have different ABV standards for barreling and distilling. The minimum bottling strength for Scotch whiskey, for example, is also 80 proof or 40 percent ABV, but there is no maximum or minimum ABV for the distillate.

It Doesnt Need To Come From Kentucky

You may have heard that in order to be a bourbon, the whiskey has to be from Kentucky. Thats not quite truebourbon can be made outside that state. But to be designated a Kentucky bourbon, the spirit has to be both distilled and aged in Kentucky. The name bourbon even comes from old Bourbon, what is now Bourbon County, Kentucky. Most bourbon is made in Kentucky, but not all, so it has become synonymous with the spirit, much as the Champagne region in France is synonymous with champagne, even though sparkling wine using similar methods is produced elsewhere. So next time you order a bourbon, you know that what youll be getting in your glass isnt just a whiskey, but a specific kind of whiskey.

All The Curves And Edges Count For Something

Since whiskey is a complex and yet refined type of liquor that’s gone through several processes, drinking it from just any type of glass is not the best way. The right glass to drink it from makes a huge difference, at least from the eyes of the master distillers.

Whiskey glasses and bourbon glasses rely on structure and its rims to help the drinks five-star quality come out. The structure of the glass has a thick bottom and helps the alcohol in some breathing room. The swirling of the whiskey in the glass has an impact when it comes to controlling the liquid’s aromatics. This step helps increase the sensory experience, which is excellent for those who are just getting into the wonders of whiskey drinking.

Popular Bourbon And Whiskey Cocktails

Now, the fun part is mixing these spirits into cocktails! Of course, bourbon cocktails are whiskey cocktails. But not all whiskey cocktails are bourbon cocktails. In other words, some whiskey cocktails call for bourbon specifically. Other whiskey cocktails you can use any style of whiskey, including bourbon. Usually Irish whiskey cocktails and Scotch cocktails are specific to that type of whiskey, so dont substitute bourbon.

What Does Bourbon Taste Like Vs Whiskey

The Difference Between Bourbon and Tennessee Whiskey

Because bourbon is aged in new, charred-oak barrels, its typically described as having notes of caramel, vanilla and oak. Bourbon can also have tasting notes such as baking spices, black pepper, cocoa and fruit. Bourbon tends to be smoother than whiskey, with a softer mouthfeel and an overall sweet-presenting flavor, making it a good entry-level sipper for those new to whiskey. Wheated bourbons have a mash bill with a high concentration of wheat, which creates an even sweeter taste.

The taste of whiskey varies depending on the style. Whiskey tends to have a woody or oaky flavor profile with notes of spice, fruit, nuts, vanilla or caramel. Although some of whiskeys flavor notes overlap with bourbon, whiskey tends to have a grainier, sharper mouthfeel than bourbon. Rye whiskey, which has a mash that contains at least 51 percent rye, tends to have a spicier flavor profile than bourbon and some other whiskeys.

What’s The Difference Between Whiskey And Bourbon

Whiskey drinking has been popular in the United States since colonial times. Even George Washington had a rye whiskey distillery. But bourbon often called “America’s native spirit” has enjoyed a resurgence in the past decade. According to the Distilled Spirits Council, in 2018, more than 24 million 9-liter cases of American whiskey was sold in the U.S., which includes both bourbon and whiskey.

But what’s the difference between the two? If you think you can use the terms interchangeably you’d be wrong. Chris Fletcher is the assistant master distiller at the Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee, the oldest registered distillery in the United States. He gave us the lowdown on the differences and similarities between the two spirits.

What Makes Bourbon Different From Whiskey

Bourbon has important distinctions that differentiate it from whiskey: it has to be made in the United States from at least 51% corn, be aged in new, charred American white oak barrels, and the finished product must be at least 80 proof.

    Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    Average Price:$32

    The Whiskey:

This Costco release is sourced from Sazeracs other Kentucky distillery, Barton 1792 Distillery down in Bardstown, Kentucky. The whiskey in the bottle is very likely the same distillate/barrels as 1792 Full Proof. However, this is proofed down a tiny bit below that at 120 proof instead of 125 proof, adding some nuance to this release.

    Bottom Line:

This is great and stands up with the best of them. If we were talking about best value, this would be number one. Alas, this is all about taste and this bottle is in the very good section for good to great when tasted next to these whiskeys.

    The Whiskey:

Buffalo Traces Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Small Batch is an entry point to the other 12 expressions released under the E.H. Taylor, Jr. label. The whiskey is a blend of barrels that meet the exact right flavor profiles Buffalo Traces blenders are looking for in a classic bottled-in-bond bourbon for Taylor.

    Bottom Line:

This is really good. Shocking, I know. That said, this ranked a little lower in that I wanted to make a Manhattan with it more than just sip it neat.

    What Does It Mean

Rye whiskey must have at least 51% rye or more by U.S. law.

A 100% Straight rye is a delicate, much more complex process in the mashing stage. Thus, making the straight rye in a small batch is preferred when not adding additives or corn to the recipe.

    But whats the Proof?

When alcohol is distilled, it always derives off the still at a more significant proof. But the method also removes everything that isnt alcohol from the liquor, including its flavor.

Therefore, this is why our rye vodka is essentially tasteless.

    What Is Straight Bourbon

Bourbon is inherently protected in that no additives may be placed into the product. This means other types of alcohol, flavors, or colors cannot be placed into a whiskey that will bear Bourbon on the label. While this inherent protection is great, it isnt uniform in every whiskey, and it can take a bit of education on the consumers part to know exactly what is in the bottle they are purchasing.

Straight Bourbon is bourbon however, to bear the designation Straight it must be aged a minimum of two years . If a product is labeled as Straight Bourbon and is less than four years old, it must bear an age-statement. This allows the consumer to know exactly what they are buying.
