How To Make The Perfect Dirty Vodka Martini

Vodkas I Like For Dirty Martinis

The Perfect Dirty Martini | Grey Goose Vodka

The quality of vodka is defined in a few ways. First, the amount of Heat it has is important. A good clean vodka doesnt feel like it is burning your tongue. A good clean taste that is smooth and doesnt burn your tongue is preferable.

Next, the type of water and the type of grain, vegetable, or even fruit makes a difference. The best vodkas are made from specific wheat grain. However, there are perfectly good vodkas made from potatoes, grapes, and even beets.

Here are some I can personally recommend:

  • Grey Goose French vodka
  • Stoli Often ranked as the best Russian vodka
  • Square One a great domestic vodka

What Is A Good Vodka That Wont Break The Bank

When you go to a liquor store, you will see the difference in the quality of the vodkas by looking first at the prices and secondly, where on the shelf the bottles are located.

You will find the cheapest alcohol, in this case, vodka, on the bottom few shelves. As your eye travels up the shelves, you will notice the brands becoming more well known and more expensive until you reach the top shelf, which houses the most famous and most expensive brands.

But back to answering the question. If you really are budget conscious, go with the Absolut brand. Its a solid vodka and wont be as harsh as other, cheaper vodkas.

If you want a vodka that is a step above Absolut, go with Ketel One, which is even smoother. And if you want a really good vodka, go with either Grey Goose as I do, or Belvedere.

What’s The Difference Between Olive Brine And Olive Juice

My Favorite Dirty Vodka Martini Recipe For Perfect Martinis

In the cocktail world, olive juice and brine tend to mean the same thing, but there is a difference. Olives produce juice, which is pressed out of the fruit to make products like olive oil and the brine for cured olives.

Many people prefer to use the brine that is in a jar of olives for dirty martinis. And why not? If you have olives, you have salty juice right there. It is a very convenient and cheap addition to the drink. Plus, with all the gourmet olives availablestuffed with everything from the standard pimento to blue cheese or jalapeñoeach brine brings a slightly different taste to the martini.

There are also many olive juices available that are designed specifically for the dirty martini. They can vary quite a bit in taste, though they’re interesting to explore. It may take some time to discover which bottled olive juice you like best, so keep trying. Dirty Sue is a favorite for many dirty martini devotees. You might also try the cocktail-worthy olive juices from Boscoli, Fee Brothers, Filthy, Fragata, or Stirrings.

Why Add Olives To A Cocktail

How did adding olives to a dry cocktail happen in the first place? According toSipsmith, the first martinis were actually sweetened with syrups and garnished with cherries. In the 1880s there was a trend in savory garnishes, so bartenders started to use them. But why add olives? The salt and brine compliment the aromatics in the gin and the tang in the vermouth, taking the drink to new heights.

It wasnt until the 1930s where this trend caught on. Allegedly, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt hosted Winston Churchill and introduced him to the Dirty Martini, adding both olives and some of the brine to the drink. There are several variations to the story, but all that to say: this classic cocktail has a place in history!

Great Vodka For Dirty Martinis

Dirty Martini Recipe with Gin | How to make the perfect Dirty Martini

It helps to know a bit about your vodka if you want to make a great martini of any sort. We can get into gin martinis another time because that is a whole other topic. But, for vodka martinis, just like gin, the quality of the alcohol makes a big difference.

This is a cocktail where you are meant to taste the alcohol, not bury it. Use cheap booze in some sort of sugary and syrupy mixer meant to hide it. For cocktails like dirty martinis, you want to taste the spirit, not conceal it.

These days, there are so many varieties of vodka to choose from. There are great domestic vodkas and of course the ever popular Russian, Polish, Swedish and French vodkas.

Lets just say it isnt hard finding a good vodka. The hard part is picking one among so many!

What Vodka Is Best For A Martini

Heres where I draw a hard line. You need to use a top shelf vodka or at least a mid-level vodka because in a martini, the main ingredient is vodka. If you use a store brand, it will taste harsh because the vodka is of a lesser quality. You need at least a mid to premium level vodka for a smoother and more delicious martini.

How To Make A Vodka Dirty Martini

Pre-step

Fill cocktail shaker halfway with ice and get a measuring glass and two .

After measuring out the ingredients, pour them into the shaker.

Step one

Gather the ingredients vodka, olive brine, vermouth and olives.

Step two

Measure 8 ounces of vodka.

Step three

Pour a small amount of dry vermouth in a shot glass. As you can see, its a very small amount.

Dont be tempted to pour it directly into the shaker because you will probably over pour. And this way, if you do over pour, you can put the vermouth back into the bottle.

Step four

Measure ¾ ounce of olive brine.

Step five

Cap the shaker and shake vigorously for 30 seconds. I try to get the ice to break up somewhat so little micro chips are poured into your glass.

Place the skewer of olives in the glasses and strain the vodka dirty martini between the two glasses.

I adore the first glass which is called the Nick and Nora glass, but it is slightly smaller than the one in the back, which is a classic martini glass.

Now for the vertical view.

I hope you enjoyed this vodka dirty martini recipe.

According to The Spruce Eats,The vodka martini follows suit with the gin martini, Manhattan, and other liquor-vermouth combo cocktails: Theyre not light drinks. Sip slowly and know your personal limit.

Here Are Some Simple Tips To Make The Perfect Vodka Martini

Dilution

Although it seems contradictory, dilution is important to a great vodka martini. When prepared properly a martini should never need ice. Its should be served straight up. The dilution happens when the martini is stirred.

Skip the shake

Although James Bond says shake, the perfect martini should be stirred. By stirring with the ice and vermouth, the martini will be chilled and all the ingredients will be incorporated.

Size matters

When youre using ice to chill the martini, use a big ice cube, like cocktail ice. The little slivers of the ice will help to chill and dilute. Crushed ice is not a good idea.

Fresh ingredients, including the vermouth

Since a martini is just a handful of ingredients, it is important to have a fresh bottle of vermouth on hand. Vermouth oxidizes, which ruins the flavor. If you havent used that bottle recently, it is best to get a new one. Also, store the vermouth in the refrigerator once its open.

The glass matters

Sure that Ina Garten martini glass is impressive, but a smaller martini glass is a better choice. The small glass helps to keep that martini chilled longer. Also, chill the glass first.

Can You Make A Martini Without Vermouth

Indeed you can and I know a lot of people who do. The first time I made this cocktail myself it was without vermouth.

You could technically call this martini a dry dirty martini because it calls for so little vermouth. In fact, nowadays when someone asks me for a dry martini, I will ask if they want any vermouth at all.

A wet martini, on the other hand, is equal amounts of vodka and vermouth, but Im not fond of the wet martini.

You will see in the recipe, and especially in the photo, how little vermouth I use. And that amount is for 2 cocktails. Sometimes, if I want the barest minimum, I pour a tad in the martini glass, swirl it around to wet the sides and dump the vermouth in the sink.

Prepare Your Glasses And Ingredients

Chill the martini glass by placing it in the freezer while building the drink if you have time to plan ahead, chill your mixing glass, too. Right before mixing time, measure out ½ ounce of the vermouth, 2 ½ ounces of liquor, and spear a couple olives onto a toothpick. As for the olive brine, start with ½ ounce at the ready. “Avoid over-pouring the olive brine,” McGlinn says. “I did a version using an ounce of brine, and it was too salty for my taste. Start with less and expect the garnish to add a bit of flavor as well.”

Okay, ingredients ready? Then grab your chilled hardware and place ice cubes in the cocktail shaker or mixing glass.

Vodka Martinis Are Stirred Not Shaken

James Bond had it wrong. Shaking a classic martini whether its made from vodka or gin aerates this spirited cocktail too much, causes excess ice melt, and creates a martini of the wrong texture. You want your martini to have a silky texture that can only come from stirring. Its always best to stir cocktails made from pure spirits such as a martini instead of shaking. Use a cocktail shaker for cocktails that incorporate fruit juices and syrups with alcohol, but not for drinks that are made from pure spirits as a vodka martini is.

How to Make The Dirty Vodka Martini – Best Drink Recipes

Determining the best vodka for your martini is, again, a matter of taste. Use an unflavored vodka of the best quality you can afford. While vodka is considered tasteless, different vodkas have subtle flavor differences. The key is finding a well-distilled vodka that is smooth and not harsh that has flavor notes you enjoy. Some good brands for a vodka martini include the following:

  • Grey Goose is a French vodka distilled from winter wheat. Its a very smooth vodka that makes silky martinis.
  • Belvedere vodka from Poland is distilled from rye. Its a smooth vodka that makes a polished martini.
  • Chopin potato vodka is a potato vodka from Poland thats good for people who are extra gluten-sensitive. Its got good flavor and makes a tasty martini.

Whats The Best Gin For A Dirty Martini

Weve been almost reflexive fans of Bombay Sapphire since we started drinking gin. Its a smooth, super-drinkable midpriced London Dry gin that thrives in a wide variety of cocktails, to be sure. But most likely our affinity has to do more with timing than anything.

Diageo sold the brand to Bacardi in 1997, and we graduated from college and moved to NYC in 1998. Sapphire was everywhere and felt fancy to us then. The rest is history.

We also seem to have Tanqueray on hand at all times and often use it in a dirty martini. And a brand collaboration resulted in our being shipped a bottle of Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin, which did NOT last long in this house and would also make a great choice.

Other easily available, excellent choices of gin for a dirty martini include:

Speaking Of Is There An Alcohol Free Gin

Finding a non-alcoholic gin can be tough but its not impossible. I really do love Caleno non-alcoholic gin because it is so clean and tastes great! I know that it isnt as readily available so Ritual Gin is another one that works great.

We use it in our non-alcoholic gin and tonic and always keep it on hand. Like with our mimosa mocktail, we added something a bit different to keep it booze free.

What’s In A Name A Lot Actually

There are a bunch of different ways to order a proper martini, here are the basics you should know when ordering this classic cocktail.

What are the main differences in dry martini vs wet martini or a dirty martini?

  • If you order a dry martini it means that you’d like less vermouth in your cocktail. A very dry martini would contain little to no vermouth one might just roll the vermouth in the glass so that a thin film coats it — nothing more.
  • Ordering a wet martini will mean more vermouth in your cocktail than the standard five-to-one ratio.
  • A dirty martini comes with a splash of olive brine or olive juice for an additional flavor kick.

Optional Vodka Martini Add

Dirty Martini Recipe

Some people like to add a few dashes of cocktail bitters to liven up a vodka martini. The bitters dont impart bitter flavors. Rather, they add additional aromatics and help bring the cocktail ingredients together. Try one or two dashes of orange or cardamom bitters or just a dash or two of Angostura or Peychauds bitters for an interesting take on a vodka martini.

According to Tony Abou-Ganim, author of Vodka Distilled, the original vodka Martini had an unusual moniker. In the 50s, with vodka gaining popularity on gin and people starting to substitute vodka for gin in a Martini, bartenders, especially in New York City, were looking for a name for the drink, he explains. The winner? For some reason, was the Kangaroo. As it appeared in The Esquire Drink Book from 1956, the Kangaroo was one wet Martini, with a 2:1 ratio of vodka to vermouth, and a lemon peel garnish.

As we start to celebrate cinema more and James Bond becomes a superstar, says Abou-Ganim, Americans embraced the vodka , and the strange name was dropped. Starting with the 1962 film Dr. No, James Bond was drinking his vodka Martinis drier, and always shaken not stirred. Abou-Ganim argues that the secret agent had more to do with vodkas popularity than anything else. In 1976, vodka surpassed whiskey as the nations most popular spirit, and it has stayed on top since.
