It All Began With Fire
T. William Bill Samuels Sr. founded Makers Mark with his wife, Margie, in Loretto, Ky., in 1953. The brand began with a fiery act of rebellion: A sixth-generation bourbon distiller, Bill Sr. literally threw the 170-year-old family bourbon recipe into a bucket fire. Some drapes were also said to have burned, and possibly his daughters hair.
What’s The Difference Between Maker’s Mark And Knob Creek
Maker’s Mark is a premium brand of bourbon whiskey produced in Loretto, Kentucky. It is distilled from corn, malted barley, and red winter wheat, then aged in charred oak barrels for five to eight years. Instantly recognizable, when you see red wax dripping down the long neck of a whiskey bottle, you know that it’s Maker’s Mark Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky.
This iconic American whiskey has a sweet flavor profile. It is fantastic neat and on the rocks, and Maker’s Mark can create impressive whiskey cocktails. Whether you’re a long-time fan or anticipating your very first taste, it is a bourbon that will not disappoint.

Makers Mark Cask Strength
Makers Mark Cask Strength is described as bourbon in its purest form. According to United States law, bourbon cannot enter the barrel at higher than 125 proof and cannot be bottled at less than 80 proof. Makers Mark Cask Strength is bottled at barrel proof, which produces a much stronger yet still smooth bourbon. Cask Strength is also non-chill filtered, which contributes to its bolder flavor.
Cask Strength retains the signature, front-of-palate flavors of Makers Mark Original but amps up some of the notes, such as the oak, caramel, vanilla, and spice. On the nose, youll definitely notice big oak, vanilla, and smoky charcoal aromas. The palate offers richer, more robust flavors of spice, vanilla, and smoke, and the finish is long on the front of the tongue, with no roughness or bitterness. Makers Mark Cask Strength ranges from 108 proof to 114 proof, depending on the batch.
Maker’s Mark To Stop Watering Down Its Whiskey
After backlash from customers, the producer of Maker’s Mark bourbon is reversing a decision to cut the amount of alcohol in bottles of its famous whiskey.
Rob Samuels, Maker’s Mark’s chief operating officer, said Sunday that it is restoring the alcohol volume of its product to its historic level of 45 percent, or 90 proof. Last week, it said it was lowering the amount to 42 percent, or 84 proof, because of a supply shortage.
“We’ve been tremendously humbled over the last week or so,” Samuels, grandson of the brand’s founder, said of customers’ reactions.
The brand known for its square bottles sealed in red wax has struggled to keep up with demand. Distribution has been squeezed, and the brand had to curtail shipments to some overseas markets.
In a tweet Sunday, the company said to its followers: “You spoke. We listened.”
The change in recipe started with a shortage of the bourbon amid an ongoing expansion of the company’s operations that cost tens of millions of dollars.
Maker’s Mark President Bill Samuels, the founder’s son, said the company focused almost exclusively on not altering the taste of the bourbon while stretching the available product and didn’t consider the emotional attachment that customers have to the brand and its composition.
“Our focus was on the supply problem. That led to us focusing on a solution,” he said. “We got it totally wrong.”
When production restarts Monday, those plans are off the table, Bill Samuels said.

What Does Maker’s Mark Taste Like
Much like Jack Daniel’s, Maker’s Mark has an unmistakable signature taste. Once you get to know it, you will be able to recognize it instantly, even without seeing the bottle.
The inviting aroma of this bourbon is marked by soft caramel and vanilla accented with wheat and oak. On the palate, the balance of tongue-caressing sweetness, vanilla, caramel, and wood creates a medium-bodied whiskey. The finish is exceptionally smooth, with subtle spice notes that dissipate quickly.
Final Thoughts On Knob Creek
Knob Creek is a surprisingly easy bourbon to drink, especially if you like your drinks neat. While it is a little less flavorful than other high-quality bourbons, its still a solid option when youre looking for something affordable and tasty.
Of course, one of the biggest drawbacks of Knob Creek is that its small-batch bourbons are no longer aged for at least nine years. While Jim Beam suggests that it is still aged longer than their other offerings, they dont share exactly how long.
Even though Knob Creek is Jim Beams attempt to stay relevant in the world of small-batch bourbons, it still has plenty of delicious offerings. I really like the Smoked Maple bourbon with my sweet tea, but I am partial to the sweeter bourbons. If you are too, I would suggest giving it a try.

Already This Brand Was Pretty Unique
Clearly, the abysmal quality of the Samuels family whisky offended Bill Samuels Sr to the point of no return. In 1953, the year he and his wife Margie decided to make a go of it with whisky distillation, Bill did something, um, rather controversial.
He tossed the 170-year-old family legacy the only copy of the Samuels family whisky recipe into the fire.
No longer weighed down by family tradition, Bill Samuels Sr was free to approach whisky distillation with brand new eyes.

What Is Makers Mark Bourbon
Makers Mark bourbon is an original handmade premium bourbon, made with a mash bill of various grain combinations, including corn, of course, soft red winter wheat, and malted barley. You can visit the distillery which has been designated as a national historic landmark distillery.
Bill Samuels may have created the recipe of the bourbon itself in the 1950s, but it was the marketing brilliance of Bills wife, Margie Samuels, that put Makers Mark on the map. She had downright revolutionary ideas for her time and thought of everything from the name, to the Makers Mark bottle design, to the iconic red-wax topper.
This bottling and dipping line is in its own building where a dedicated team takes the first bottle and dips it once and you can see as the red wax drips and is left to create the signature top.
Each and every label of Makers Mark is individually stamped using a hand-press label maker, using original machine that is as old as the brand itself. The signature S Mark IV is a star for the farm they used to live in, the S for Samuels and the IV for Bill being a fourth-generation distiller. The Master Distiller today is Greg Davis.
The hot Kentucky summers are perfect for barrel condition for storing the 500-pound barrels of Makers Mark. They are the only major bourbon house that hand rotates the barrels. From the top of the rickhouse to the bottom, the smell is divine and has your taste buds eager for that first sip.

Whelllp here we are. The last glass of this tasty little bottle. I know it seems a little weird to be doing this for such a small bottle, but Ive killed more than my fair share of Makers bottles in my time so I feel like on some level its not the size of the bottle that matters, but the journey you have been through in drinking it.
This being the first whiskey I truly sipped on it has a very special place in my personal pantheon of whiskeys. Im a big fan of it and its older brother the Makers 46. Both are great whiskeys that I enjoy fully and, most importantly, are whiskeys that I enjoy sharing with my friends.
This standard offering is a stalwart in the whiskey world and its dependable in its quality from first sip to last. Sure there was that whole messy business about them considering dropping the proof for a bit, but thats the past and whats important is whats happening right now. Which, at this moment is that Im killing the last of this bottle and enjoying every sip.
There is no score change here, because like I said earlier. Its a dependable whiskey and that means it stays much the same through the whole bottle. Unless it takes you 3 years to drink it and its been quietly oxidizing, then it might change but thats your fault not Makers.
So cheers to them, cheers to you and cheers to life. Another great whiskey down and its on to the next one!
But Which One Is Best
Of course, the answer to this question depends entirely on your tastes. Makers Mark is a great bourbon if you are looking for a sipping bourbon thats not going to cost you an arm and a leg. Knob Creek, on the other hand, it great if you want a flavorful bourbon that goes down smooth when you want to sit on your porch and watch the world go by.
If you prefer to mix your bourbon with another drink either label has an option that will work. As I mentioned with Knob Creek, its Smoked Maple bourbon is great with sweet tea. Makers Mark has its Cask Strength offering which is perfect in a glass of cold Coca-Cola.
For my money, Im going with Knob Creek. Its smooth, sweet, and has several options if you prefer a bourbon thats not as rich. Its flavorful, which makes it quite addicting and hard to put down. Theres a lot to love with Knob Creek, which is why Im choosing it over Makers Mark.

Makers Mark Wood Finishing Series 2021 Limited Release
Each year, Makers Mark releases a limited release bourbon from their wood finishing series. This year, theyve released the FAE-01, which uses wood finishing to amplify the already present dried fruit and woody richness in the original Makers Mark. They claim it tastes exactly how their warehouse smells: rich figgy notes, tobacco undertones, and pleasantly dank woodiness. As the name suggests, this is a limited release, so its only available for a short amount of time. If youd like to try it, act quickly.
On the nose, youll notice very heavy wood aromas, coupled with smells of dark fruit and tobacco. The palate offers deep and dark dried fruit notes and a big midpalate with strong tobacco and barrel extractives. The finish is creamy, round, and lingering. This bourbon is bottled at cask strength and is 110.6 proof.
Makers Mark Vs Jack Daniels
Both spirits are American-made superstars of the whiskey world. Both are extremely popular, however, there are a few fundamental differences:
- Makers Mark is made with red winter wheat, while Jack Daniels is crafted from rye.
- While both are aged in the same type of oak barrels, Makers Mark is aged for 6 years, while Jack Daniels is aged for 4.
- Both are technically bourbons, but Makers Mark is a bourbon whiskey, while Jack Daniels is classified as a Tennessee whiskey.
- Both whiskeys are known for their sweetness, but Makers Marks characteristic sweet taste is by virtue of the red winter wheat, while Jack Daniels is down to the distilleries maple charcoal filtration process.
- Makers Mark boasts an ABV of 45%, while Jack Daniels comes in at a slightly less dizzy-making 40%.
