Let Me Tell You About Sam And The Culinary Compass
Sam is a lifelong food lover, but dreamed of being an engineerbut her dreams were dashed when she realized she wasnt into physics. Halfway through college, she realized she wanted to work with food in some capacity, so she decided to minor in Food Science and Technology along with her degree in Industrial Engineering.
At the same time, she was working in the study abroad office at school, dreaming of where she could travel, the places she could go and the foods she could try while there.
How did her blog, The Culinary Compass, come into being? I knew I wanted to work with food, but where I was wasnt the dream I was thinking of. I wanted to be hands on, developing recipes, and sharing those with friends, family, or whoever wanted to read them.
Sam has created her own little corner of the Internet, marrying her love for travel, food science and her love for experiencing other cultures through their food.

What Beer Should I Use In This Beer Cheese Dip
The stoutness of the beer will have an effect on the final taste, so use the type of beer you like. The stronger/stouter the beer, the more beer flavor the dip will have.
If you dont like drinking stout/heavy/bitter beer, definitely dont use it in this recipe.
I used Shiner Bock and even though its not my fave to drink, I enjoyed it in the dip!

What Kind Of Cheese Should I Use
For a standard beer cheese sauce, I really prefer a sharp shredded cheddar cheese. Its important that no matter what cheese you use, you shred your own.
Why should you avoid pre-shredded cheese when making any cheese sauce? Well, pre-shredded cheeses are coated to prevent sticking and clumping in the packaging. This impacts the outcome of how well your sauce holds together .
Other options for this beer cheese dip would be:
- Smoked Cheddars or Other Smoked Cheeses
- Spicy Pepper Jack
For this recipe I used-
- 1, 12 oz. Low Carb Beer
- 8 oz. Softened Cream Cheese
- 8 oz. Block of Shredded Cheese
I always like to add salt and pepper and sometimes depending on what I used the sauce for, I may add other spices like my all purpose BBQ rub, this Cajun BBQ dry rub, or even myhomemade Tajin seasoning blend with some pepper jack cheese too!
Erins Easy Entertaining Tips
Hi, hello. Pretzel Cheese Dip is the perfect dip and appetizer to serve at any gathering, but especially a gathering that revolves around watching sports. It would also be great for birthday parties, happy hours and more because its versatile.
Also, who doesnt love a good cheese sauce for pretzels?
Here are a few ideas to making this goodness for a crowd:
- Double the recipe! We had more than enough for our family of four, but if youve got some cheese lovers coming over, make life easier on yourself and make more.
- Make the beer cheese dip 2-3 hours in advance, and transfer to the slow cooker. Keep it warm in there, and let guests ladle spoonfuls onto their plates when its time to serve.
- If youre feeding kids, consider using a lighter beer. Why? You taste the beer in the cheese. The more hops in the beer, the more bitter the dip will become.
- Serve it with more than just pretzels. Yes, I love a good pretzel, but this easy cheese sauce also works on tortilla chips, as well as your favorite chopped vegetables.

How To Store Beer Cheese Dip
Store this beer cheese dip in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
When Reheating Beer Cheese dip: we recommend reheating just like its cooked LOW AND SLOW! Reheat on the stovetop on low, stirring frequently. This will help prevent any separating or uneven reheating. You may need to add a little milk or broth when reheating if the dip is too thick. Start with a tablespoon and increase from there.
Freezing Beer Cheese Dip: because cheese has a difficult time with drastic temperature changes, we do NOT recommend freezing this dip!

You only need 10 ingredients to make this thick and creamy beer cheese dip. Below are the ingredients you need with a few suggestions of substitutions.
- Butter and flour: create a roux that thickens the dip. Make sure to fully incorporate the roux into the milk before adding the cheese.

- Beer: we are using a lager but you could also use a pale ale, blonde ale, or wheat beer. Just avoid stouts and sours!
- Cheese: we love the combination of mozzarella and cheddar it melts smoothly and gives great flavor! But you could swap out the cheese for what you have on hand gruyere, fontina, monterey jack, etc.
- Garlic powder: adds a bit of earthiness to the dip.
- Ground stone mustard: mustard give the dip that classic pretzel and cheese flavor. Yum! Feel free to swap it for dijon mustard.

Easy 4 Ingredient Beer Cheese Dip With Ranch Recipe
This beer cheese dip with ranch couldnt be easier to make, but make no mistake about it! It tastes fabulous, and if you bring it to a party, youll always go home with an empty bowl!
Beer and cheese are a natural pairing, probably an even better fit than wine and cheese, and there is a sound reason for it. The beers complex flavor is a natural fit with the density and richness of the most common cheeses. The slight bitterness of the hops plays well with the saltiness of the cheese.
Cream cheese is a perfect base for this recipe. Cream cheese has a tangy element that brings out the best in all the ingredients and brings them together in a happy marriage of deliciousness.

What Do I Do If My Sauce Is Too Thin
The sauce may appear somewhat thin . As the sauce cools slightly however, it will thicken more.
If youre concerned about the outcome after it has slightly cooled, you can cautiously add a 1/4 -1/2 tsp of xanthan gum into it. I suggest this with caution as too much can cause the texture to become very slimy and unpleasant. Cornstarch works in a pinch too!
How Much Cheese To Use
I like this dip on the slightly thinner side, so I only use ¾ cup mozzarella and ¾ cup cheddar. If you know you like a thicker dip, Id start with 1 cup of each and add more as you need to. Just keep in mind that this dip will thicken as it rests.
You can also make this with other cheeses. Try substituting the cream cheese for some of the half-and-half to make the dip thicker, or try using gruyere for a deeper flavor.
